Masseto - Toscana IGT 2010

Climate and harvest
The 2010 growing season will be remembered for being one of the latest in recent years. From budbreak on, in fact, the growth stages were some 10 days behind normal, and that slow pace continued through to the harvest. A rainy spring was followed by a hot, dry Summer, which favoured optimal development of the clusters. A few rain showers interrupted the harvest in September, but adequate dry, sunny periods allowed the fruit to fully ripen. Painstaking vineyard management, and careful leaf-pulling in particular, ensured that the grapes were sound and healthy. Cool nights encouraged fine development of aromatic compounds, with the grapes displaying remarkably crisp fruit and floral qualities.

Vinification and ageing
Harvest started on 14 September, with the youngest vines of ‘Masseto Junior’ and ‘Masseto Isola’ and was concluded on 4 October with the left section of ‘Masseto Centrale’; that concluding date was the latest ever in the history of Masseto, yielding a total of five different vinification lots. The clusters were hand-picked into 15-kg boxes and then graded and selected by hand on a double sorting table, before and after destemming, and finally carefully crushed. Each single vineyard block was vinified separately.
Fermentation took place in both steel and oak, followed by a 15-20 day maceration at 25-28°C. The wine then began malolactic fermentation, in new oak barriques. Each individual lot was matured separately for the first 12 months.
The wine was then assembled and returned to the barriques for an additional year, for a total of 24 months. After bottling, the wine aged a further 12 months prior to release

I doubt many people could pick the 2010 Masseto blind in a lineup of top-flight Right Bank wines. An utterly brilliant, focused Merlot, the 2010 Masseto is totally alive and vibrant. A myriad of aromas and flavors develop in the glass, but ultimately the 2010 has a crystalline quality that I have never before seen in Masseto. The 2010 isn't quite as extroverted as the 2006, but it might very well move in that direction over time. Readers who are used to the forward, explosive fruit typical of young Masseto won't find that here. Instead, the 2010 is built on serious energy. In my view, it is without question one of the very finest Massetos ever made. In 2010, only the older, core Masseto parcels (Masseto Centrale and Alto) were used.

The 2010 Masseto is truly monumental, leaving you breathless and wordless all at once. Once you sip the wine, it takes a few minutes before you grasp the enormity of its beauty and potential. You almost have to wonder how enologist Axel Heinz could conceive of a wine this beautiful - and how did he execute it? I could wax poetic for hours: Dark cherry, chocolate, baking spice and tobacco smoke lift off the bouquet in thin veils and magical puffs. The quality of the aromas is exceptional, but again, the seamless integration is what makes Masseto a protagonist of Italian wine. No matter how much time goes by, that beauty will remain firmly etched in your memory bank. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030.

This year Ornellaia celebrates the 25th anniversary of its flagship wine, the eponymous Ornellaia (1988-2013). General Director Leonardo Raspini and his team decide to celebrate with a commemorative edition of the wine packaged in an etched bottle with gold lettering.

Sattes, funkelndes Rubinviolett.

A wine with amazing depth and grace with super integrated tannins and currant, berry character. Full body, with great fruit and a long, long, long finish. Truly great. Great depth of fruit with layers of tannins and wonderful freshness. A classic quality in this pure Merlot wonder. Try in 2017.

Rich and concentrated, showing blackberry, plum, clove and spice flavors buoyed by dense tannins. With aeration, a cedar note emerges and the texture becomes smooth and seamless. Tightly knit and refined, this will be terrific once the oak has integrated. Merlot.
Best from 2016 through 2032.
