The 2016 Le Petit Caillou is medium to deep garnet-purple colored with plums, earth, kirsch and blackberries on the nose and waft of underbrush. The medium-bodied palate is soft, juicy and innocuous.

The 2016 Le Petit Caillou has a simple, black cherry and cassis-scented bouquet that was showing just a little too much volatile acidity on the sample that I tasted. The palate is better with saturated tannin, good depth if missing some complexity and detail on the monotone finish. Drink over the next four or five years.

Barrel Sample. This is made from the young vines of the Borie properties in Saint-Julien. It is sophisticated and ripe, with attractive juiciness and red cherry fruit. This is a wine that has much of the style of appellation without great structure or density.
