The 2016 Maucaillou has a well-defined, tertiary, sous-bois scented bouquet that unfolds in the glass but resolutely remains "classic" in style, revealing pleasant tobacco scents with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a bit of new oak showing its hand on the entry. That will need to be assimilated during élevage. But there is commendable depth towards the finish that has a subtle spiciness on the aftertaste. Tasted twice, the second time attested to improvement in bottle and I think it will continue that trajectory during its barrel maturation.

The 2016 Maucaillou is a powerful, earthy Moulis. Grilled herbs, sweet tobacco, menthol and dried cherry give the wine its distinctive personality. There is good energy and persistence, but a bit less in the way of midpalate depth. Overall, the 2016 is solid, if a touch rustic.

(60 Cabernet Sauvignon, 37 Merlot, 3 Petit Verdot) A little too grubby and a little too leafy, but this is still a passable effort for this estate and it will soften in no time at all.

Pungent tarmacadam nose. Very dry and slightly hollow palate. Not quite enough flesh.

Linear and fruity with some blackberry and chocolate character, a medium body and firm tannins. There with the excellent 2015.
