Léoville Las Cases - un Super Second qui tutoie les Premiers Crus Classés

Château Léoville Las Cases, 2nd Grand Cru Classé de Saint-Julien, est l'un des bijoux de la famille Delon depuis 1901. Son terroir se situe principalement dans le Clos de Léoville Las Cases par lequel on passe en sortant du village de Saint-Julien en direction de Pauillac, dont une partie est située juste à côté du Château Latour. Le Grand Vin de Léoville du Marquis de Las Cases possède des caractéristiques totalement uniques. Les vins vieillissent magnifiquement bien et peuvent traverser les décennies avec une grande intensité. Déguster un vieux Léoville Las Cases, c'est toujours déguster quelque chose de spécial, et souvent surprenant.

Depuis un an, Jean Guillaume Prats a pris la tête des propriétés de la famille Delon. Fort de son expérience à Cos d'Estournel et au Château Lafite Rothschild, il signe un millésime 2022 exceptionnel et dont la perfection fait l'unanimité parmi les critiques: Léoville Las Cases 2022 obtient 18 fois la note parfaite, c'est une première dans l'histoire viticole mondiale.

The 1986 Leoville-Las Cases is still so youthful in appearance after 30 years, with only a thin bricking on the rim giving away its age. The bouquet is magnificent: extraordinarily pure and delineated, bewitching black fruit laced with cedar and graphite, the latter lending an almost Pauillac-like personality. The palate is exactly as I have found the previous dozen or so bottles I have tasted: structured, delineated, intense, aristocratic and imperious. It is less formidable than say, ten years ago, so it has probably just stepped onto its drinking plateau. The acidity is perfectly judged lending freshness and tension, crucial to counterbalance those layers of spicy black fruit that fans out with cedar and graphite (again) towards the finish. You come away with the feeling of having consumed a wine with immense energy, yet with so much more to give over the next three decades, and knowing this property, perhaps even the three decades after that! I would agree with the late Michel Delon: the 1986 Léoville Las-Cases is the summit of the 1980s. Tasted September 2016.

The late Michel Delon always thought that this was the greatest vintage he had produced. We often tasted it side by side with the 1982, because I always preferred the latter vintage. Of course, the two vintages are quite different in style, with the 1986 a monument to classicism, with great tannin, extraordinary delineation, and a huge, full-bodied nose of sweet, ripe cassis fruit intermixed with vanilla, melon, fruitcake, and a multitude of spices. The wine has always been phenomenally concentrated, yet wonderfully fresh and vigorous. The wine still seems young, yet it is hard to believe it is not close to full maturity. It is a great example of Leoville Las Cases, and another compelling reason to take a serious look at the top Cabernet Sauvignon-based Medocs of 1986. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2035. The 1986 Leoville-Las Cases, which Delon continues to believe is his finest vintage in the eighties (even eclipsing the 1982), still exhibits a black/purple color with no signs of age. The nose offers up aromas of exceptionally ripe cassis fruit intertwined with scents of vanillin, minerals, and spices. The wine is full-bodied, exceptionally well-delineated, and phenomenally concentrated. Still unevolved and youthful, this is one of the most profound Leoville-Las-Cases, but for my palate, it remains a notch behind both the 1982 and 1996. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2030. This tasting consisted of each of the varietal components of Las Cases, followed by the final blend for Leoville-Las Cases. The 1986 vintage was a great success for Leoville-Las Cases, and each component wine revealed the intensity, power, ripeness, and concentration of this vintage. Nevertheless, as marvelous as the single wines were, the assemblage once again proved that the whole was better than any individual part. The 1986 Merlot, one of the richest cuvees of this educational tasting, offered a superb, roasted coffee, jammy black-cherry sweetness, opulent, dense, concentrated, full-bodied flavors, and a soft, heady, lush finish. The Cabernet Franc exhibited a jammy black-cherry sweetness, as well as plenty of black fruits, herbs, and spicy scents, medium body, and a supple finish. The opaque purple-colored Cabernet Sauvignon possessed gobs of sweet tannin, awesome concentration and intensity, and a full-bodied, powerful, youthful palate. The 1986 Petit Verdot is amazing, from its saturated black/purple color to its gigantic framework.. This wine was crammed with scents of cedar, black fruits, and Asian spices, as well as jammy, tannic fruit flavors. The 1986 Leoville-Las Cases, which Delon believes is his finest vintage (even eclipsing the 1982), exhibited a black/purple color with no signs of age. This full-bodied, brilliantly delineated, super-concentrated wine is close to perfection. Still unevolved and youthful, it needs another 7-10 years of cellaring.

Tasted 8 Times Since Bottling With Consistent Notes Michel Delon, the formidable administrator of Leoville-Las Cases, likens his 1986 to his 1966 and 1961. Having had both those wines, I have to say the 1986 vintage is far superior. From the dense, virtually opaque, ruby/black/purple color, which offers up aromas of intense blackcurrants and black-cherries, as well as a hefty dose of toasty new oak, this beautifully crafted, full-bodied wine shows extraordinary extract, near-perfect balance, and remarkable length and persistence on the palate. With as much tannin as in any recent Leoville-Las Cases, this wine is certainly going to need a minimum of 10-15 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 1998-2030.

From its dense, virtually opaque, ruby, black/purple color, which offers up aromas of intense blackcurrants and black cherries, as well as a hefty dosage of toasty new oak, this beautifully crafted, impeccably balanced, full-bodied wine shows extraordinary extract, near perfect balance, and remarkable length and persistence on the palate. There is as much tannin as in any recent Leoville-Las-Cases, so this wine is certainly going to need a minimum of 10-15 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 1996-2030. Last tasted, 5/93.

Firm and focused, with beautifully articulated currant, raspberry and nutmeg aromas and flavors; very supple for such a lean-textured Bordeaux. Approaching drinkability, but it can use until 2000 to soften.--Léoville Las Cases vertical.
