Tasted ex-chateau and single blind in Southwold. The Cheval Blanc 2008 is a great wine. Here, this bottle has a pure, elegant bouquet that unfurls with each swirl of the glass. It offers a smorgasbord of red fruits: wild strawberry, a touch of kirsch, cranberry and just a touch of lifted alcohol. The new oak is seamlessly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins that are ripe and rounded, perhaps belying the sheer weight of its sweet core of fruit. It is a little more ostentatious than I expected and blind, I conjectured whether it could be Chateau Angelus? Superb. Tasted January 2012.

I am really impressed with this. It is powerful and rich with so much blueberry, vanilla and spice on the nose and palate. It's full and very spicy, and fruit on the palate, but remains refined and subtle. Rich and polished tannins. This needs at least five years of bottle age to come around.

The 2008 Cheval Blanc (55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Franc) is a winner from this underrated, classic vintage. Notes of forest floor, Asian plum sauce, black currants, sweet cherries and spice are followed by a medium to full-bodied wine with deep fruit, admirable purity, and a long, textured finish. There is not a hard edge to this wine, and in all likelihood, it can be drunk now or cellared for two decades.

This isnt shy about letting a tobacco leaf note weave in and out, while the core of red currant, damson plum and bitter cherry grows and fleshes out as this airs. The long finish lets mineral, red licorice and mesquite check in as well. Shows impressive range, with some youthful grip still to be shed. Best from 2013 through 2020. -J.M

Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, jugendliche Reflexe, violetter Rand. In der Nase zarte kirschenfrucht, exotische Gewürze, zarte Schokoladenote, feine süße vermittelnd, noch verhalten. Am Gaumen sehr attraktiv, lebediges Säurespiel, hat Rasse und Eleganz, delikat, feine Tannine, rotbeerige Frucht, nuancen von Erdbeerkonfit, zarter Nougat im Finish, sehr gutes Reifepotenzial, einfach frisch und delikat.

(50% merlot and 50% cabernet franc) Bright medium ruby. Delicate, floral aromas of violets, red berries and tobacco, with a hint of pine needles. Bright and fresh on entry, this lighter-styled, easygoing version of Cheval Blanc offers pretty red cherry and raspberry flavors nicely lifted by a citrus twist. Finishes very long, pure and suave, with fine-grained tannins. Though cabernet franc is apparent on the nose, this is yet another Cheval Blanc characterized by a large percentage of merlot. And even though estate manager Pierre Lurton told me that all the great Cheval Blancs of recent memory had a majority of merlot, I long for the cabernet franc-dominated wines of yesteryear. For my money, bring on more '82s rather than '89s, as great as both of those wines are!

50 % Cabernet Franc, 50 % Merlot. Nur 25 ha/hl Ertrag! Extrem dichtes Purpur mit Purpurreflexen. Diskretes Bouquet mit viel Tiefe, Gewürznoten wie Kardamom, Nelken, Moschus, Lakritze, später Brombeerengelée. Dichter, fetter und doch eleganter Gaumen, extrem feine Tannine, süsses Extrakt, intensiv nach schwarzen Früchten, Heidelbeeren und Holundernoten, nachhaltiges Finale. Grosser, sich klassisch gebender Cheval, obgleich doch mit weniger Cabernet Franc als üblich. Kleiner Ertrag – winzige Mengen. Das Preisniveau war in letzter Zeit mörderisch hoch, so dass selbst langjährige Händler die Allokationen freundlich zurückwiesen. Kommt es hier endlich zu einer angebrachten Preiskorrektur? 2018 – 2038

In time, the profound 2008 Cheval Blanc will rank alongside this estate's great successes of 2005, 2000, and 1998. A harvest that began at the end of September and concluded October 19 has produced a wine with the 1998's complexity and the power of the 2000. A blend of equal parts Cabernet Franc and Merlot, the dense ruby/purple-tinged 2008 reveals an ethereal nose of subtle menthol intertwined with spring flowers, plums, black currants, and sweet cherries. The wine's seamlessness is enthralling, and, despite the late harvest as well as late malolactics, it is already displaying admirable complexity. This is a beautifully complete, full-bodied Cheval Blanc that dances across the palate with the finesse of a world-class ballerina. Analytically, there is plenty of tannin, but it is totally integrated. While the acids are slightly elevated, they are not noticeable. A tour de force! This wine should evolve for three decades or more.

Remarquable Cheval, très plein et profond, doté d’un corps onctueux et raffiné soutenu par des tanins soyeux. Associant des notes élégantes de poivron rouge bien mûr à des arômes de cerise noire sans aucune lourdeur, le vin se déploie avec une grande fraîcheur et une incontestable persistance.

This has a more understated nose that usual but do not be misled, it has wonderful definition and poise, a sense of natural harmony that had already been perceived on the Second Wine. There is a tertiary scent that is coming from the Cabernet Franc which is superb. The palate is very well a balanced, great vibrancy and tension, super-fine tannins, a little more structure thanks to the Cabernet Franc. PL – “a pixellated wine.” Lovely pure raspberry and red cherry towards the poised, fresh finish. This is a wonderful, natural Cheval Blanc. Tasted April 2009.

Depuis janvier 2008, Pierre Lurton met les bouchées doubles dans le vignoble pour donner à ce vin une dimension nouvelle. Tous les visiteurs remarqueront le rehaussage du palissage, la modification du système de taille. Même la façon d’effeuiller a été changée cette année. Quant aux chais, les vinifications se veulent encore plus douces et pourtant Cheval Blanc n’est pas un adepte des vins musculeux. Avec 23 hl/ha de rendement, des merlots à 13,7° naturel, des cabernets francs à 13° naturel, des IPT de 80 et un PH à 3,62 ; voici un vin à la densité nouvelle. Il est encore discret au nez, mais sa bouche offre un charme redoutable. Très velouté, très savoureux, d’une pulpe exquise, corpulent, le vin s’achève long, sur une texture serrée et une réelle profondeur de goût. C’est superbe. L’assemblage, 50% merlot et 50% cabernet franc, est très récent et pas encore fondu. Production : 50 000 bouteilles.

Exceptionally dark crimson. Very polished. Fragrant and fresh. I got a hit of pine on this wine as well as on its new stablemate La Tour du Pin – maybe from the trees outside the tasting room here at Cheval? Very fine and sculpted and well mannered even if without perhaps quite the spark of life that one would ideally hope for. Very cool and fresh. Lots of very ripe tannin. Clearly lots of Cabernet Franc. Succulent and supple. Ticks all the boxes – am I being niggly to ask for just a little more misbehaviour? Perhaps because I have just tasted the pretty wild Pétrus. Clearly this will have a long life and I can’t see it disappointing anyone. But whom will it actually thrill? Limpid and unctuous. Drink 2018-35

A superb Cheval Blanc displaying the fragrance, finesse of texture and Pomerolesque opulence for which it is renowned. Made from a 50/50 blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, it has elegance, freshness and length with an understated density and structure for long ageing. Close in quality to the 2005. Drink 2016-2030.

Offers blackberry and flowers on the nose, with hints of prune and spices. Full and chewy, with vanilla and rose petal. This is muscular and angular now, but the finish lasts a long time.
