Cheval des Andes, le "grand cru" des Andes

Cheval des Andes est né de la rencontre entre deux cultures, mêlant la vision et le savoir-faire du Château Cheval Blanc à la viticulture en altitude de la région de Mendoza. Dans des conditions climatiques exigeantes, c'est ici que le Malbec et le Cabernet Sauvignon se rejoignent pour créer un assemblage unique, au pied de la chaîne des Andes. La philosophie de Cheval des Andes en matière de viticulture est vraiment particulière, car elle combine deux terroirs très distincts : Las Compuertas à Lujan de Cuyo et Paraje Altamira dans la vallée d'Uco. Au fil du temps, cette vision s'affine, et la fraîcheur, l'équilibre et la complexité deviennent les signatures de Cheval des Andes.

Fondé à Mendoza en 1999, Cheval des Andes fête ses 25 ans cette année et ouvre un nouveau chapitre prometteur de son histoire. Né dans le respect des traditions des grandes caves argentines, il incarne aujourd'hui l'esprit de Cheval Blanc au pied des Andes, et a rejoint la prestigieuse famille des Vins d'Exception de LVMH.

Le Millésime 2021 :

Le millésime 2021 à Mendoza a été frais et humide, avec des précipitations deux fois plus abondantes que l'année précédente. Les températures moyennes assez basse pendant la période de maturation ont permis de produireun vin avec une grande complexité aromatique, tout en conservant la fraîcheur naturelle caractéristique de Cheval des Andes.

Notes de dégustation :

Cheval des Andes capture l'essence d'un millésime frais dans la région de Mendoza. Sa robe se pare d'un rouge rubis délicat et brillant, rehaussé de reflets grenat. Le nez révèle une complexité raffinée, marquée par des arômes floraux et des fruits rouges. En bouche, il séduit par son élégance, sa vivacité et sa fraîcheur, avec des tanins soyeux et une finale longue et persistante.

In many ways, 2021 was a Bordeaux-like year for a region as dry and sunny as Mendoza. The wine reflects this, offering delicate cherry and blackberry fruit along with a touch of wild herbs, layered with hints of ash and orange petit-fours. Dry, with fine-grained, lightly reactive tannins, the palate is juicy and enveloping. Though leaner than in previous years, it remains equally refined. Long and nuanced, this is such an elegant wine.

Layered, pure and clean, this is more of a ‘Cheval’ than it is an ‘Andes’, but that is no bad thing. I have known this wine since its very first release, and if you are a fan, this 2021, which is a blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Malbec and 3% Petit Verdot, is guaranteed to hit the high notes on your palate.

Coming from a cooler, wetter vintage, the 2021 Cheval des Andes is a blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Malbec, and 3% Petit Verdot. The nose is incredibly closed and slightly reduced to begin. After giving it considerable time and air, floral notes of violets and iris bulb begin to emerge, leading to a core of ripe, juicy blueberries, warm cassis, and red currant preserves, plus suggestions of tar and anise. The medium to full-bodied palate is very bright and pure, delivering vibrant blue and black fruit layers with floral nuances and a velvety texture, finishing with great freshness and on a lingering aniseed note. I love how this wine embraces the cooler vintage rather than fighting it, delivering a very elegant, fragrant style. This graceful beauty will need a good 3-5 years in bottle, then drink it over the next 20 years+.

Cheval des Andes 2022 (Mendoza; 49% Cabernet Sauvignon; 48% Malbec; 3% Petit Verdot; 14% alcohol). Very floral. Beautiful. Quite Cheval Blanc in style and feel. Cedar, graphite, peony, iris, lily of the valley. Incense, beeswax. Lithe, precise, focussed but fluid and dynamic. Juicy with sapid ripples at first that build and form themselves into little waves of juicy freshness on the finish. Lovely. A great success. 97.

The 2021 Cheval des Andes is seductive and savory on the nose, leading with pure, earth-tinged aromas of pipe tobacco, turned soil, dried herbs and rich yet composed dark fruits. Exotic, dark spice notes and a pleasantly integrated framing of new oak accents appear with further aeration. The palate is deliciously supple and impressively layered, with a harmonious, long and ever-expanding finish that highlights extreme delicacy. The tannins are persistent yet composed, gently yet persistently lengthening the finish and melding nicely with the vibrant acidity underneath—a beautiful combination of savory charm, serious depth and focused intensity. It's a blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Malbec and 3% Petite Verdot that spent an average of 12-13 months in 50% barrique, 30% demi-muid and 20% foudre.

Complex aromas of blueberries, pie crust, fresh flowers and currant bush with hints of baking spices like nutmeg. Medium- to full-bodied with extremely fine tannins that are integrated and gorgeous. Graceful and refined, with super length. Interestingly, 20% of the wine was aged in large oak casks (2,500 liters), mostly from Slovenia. Try after 2027 but a joy to taste now.

Light and elegant, the 2021 Cheval des Andes is 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Malbec, 3% Petit Verdot. It achieves a feat that only cool years can provide: smooth texture, agile palate and just the right amount of freshness for a nuanced build. As it breathes, it begins to reveal notes of fresh cherry and plum, with a hint of menthol, maraschino cherries and a touch of pepper. It opens further with aromas of sandalwood and oak that complete the framework. This is a somewhat leaner, more ethereal Cheval than other years, but it has a higher level of precision. It's a wine inspired by Bordeaux, executed in a Bordeaux style, with Mendoza terroir. A wine without edges, it’s a polished red in the early stages of a long, balanced life.
