Cambon la pelouse - Haut-Médoc 2015

Cambon La Pelouse, Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel

The 2015 Cambon La Pelouse is radiant and full of character. Silky tannins wrap around a core of ripe dark cherry, cedar, smoke, tobacco, grilled herb and licorice. Drink this juicy, inviting Haut Médoc over the next few years. The blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot.

A friendly, plump style, with a blast of warm plum and blueberry compote flavors infused with melted licorice and pudding notes. Drink now through 2020. 20,833 cases made.  –JM

Big black fruits and a ton of ripe tannins make this a dramatic wine that would be hard not to like. The balance is really good and that makes it delicious right now. If it were a bit more complex it would rate even more highly.

Close to some of the top Margaux vineyards, this estate regularly produces some fine wines. This bottling is beautifully structured, firm with tannins and also generous with black fruits. A high percentage of Merlot gives a particularly ripe and juicy wine that will age over the medium-term. Drink from 2022

Another little gem Cru Bourgeois is the 2015 Château Cambon La Pelouse which comes from close to equal amounts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with roughly 4% Petit Verdot. It offers a darker edge in its blackcurrant, underbrush, tobacco and earthy aromatics, is medium-bodied, beautifully concentrated, and has building tannin. It's absolutely worth seeking out and will drink nicely for a decade or more.

Tasted at the Cru Bourgeois annual tasting, the 2015 Cambon la Pelouse has an outgoing, high-toned bouquet with plush blueberry and blackberry fruit, although I would have liked to see more elegance and terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, moderate depth, touches of dried herbs, black tea and pencil shavings lacing the black fruit on the finish. It almost belatedly remembers where it comes from! Tasted September 2017.

Very dark purplish black. Savoury and glamorous – lots of extraction! Round and inky at the same time. This is very flashy and delivers a lot upfront but to be really picky, it falls away on the finish – just alcohol on the end – and doesn’t really have serious follow through.

Oaky, with sweet cherries and licorice that are easy to find, the wine is medium bodied and forward, with a hint of cocoa along with the dark red fruits in the finish. This is a wine you can drink early.

Classy cassis fruit with real smoothness and nice length. Has both polish and grip. 2020-2028

The 2015 Cambon La Pelouse is dark, juicy and quite expressive. Black cherry, menthol, licorice, coffee and leather meld together as this supple, expressive Haut-Médoc opens up in the glass. The 2015 is really quite lovely and delicious. It will be interesting to see if the tannins soften a bit from here. Hints of tobacco and savory herbs add the closing shades of aromatic nuance. The blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. Tasted two times.

Mid crimson. Very light nose and then ripe, round, sweet fruit and slightly underripe tannins. Peppery finish. Could be GV.  Drink 2021-2028 16.5-

Barrel Sample. This wine is soft, with light tannins and ripe black plum fruits. The structure only comes through slowly to balance a wine that will be for medium-term aging. 88 points

The 2015 Cambon la Pelouse has quite a rich bouquet with small red cherries, kirsch and blackcurrant aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry, quite pure in the mouth, though it needs a little more complexity to develop on the finish that just trails away at the moment. Drink 2020-2028
