Beauregard (BIO-ORGANIC) - Pomerol 2020

The 2020 Beauregard shows a little overripeness on the nose. It lacks the delineation of the La Fleur de Gay, though it offers attractive boysenberry and bilberry aromas. With aeration, it gains more composure and finesse. The palate is medium-bodied and quite structured with saturated tannins, but the finish tapers quicker than I would have liked. This needs to flesh out a bit. It's in a gawky stage as it showed far superior just after bottling. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The 2020 Beauregard offers up aromas of rich berries, cherries, licorice and sweet soil tones, followed by a medium to full-bodied, firm and rather extracted palate. There's certainly some substance here, so perhaps time will be kind to it?

Showing beautifully, the 2020 Château Beauregard displays a pure, precise, elegant, medium to full-bodied style that stays compact and focused. Giving up lots of ripe black cherries, blackberries, leafy herbs, graphite, and chalky minerality, it has ripe, finely polished tannins, remarkable purity, and outstanding length. It needs to be forgotten for 4-6 years and, I suspect, will have 20-25 years of overall longevity. It's a pretty, pure, elegant, incredibly impressive Pomerol.

The opening notes of violets, coupled with all those sweet, ripe, cherries, spice, plums, and licorice gets you excited to know more., and you do once the wine crosses your palate with all of its layers of fresh, silky, elegant red fruits that express a beautiful sense of purity, chocolate, and spice on the palate. Beauregard has really been upping their game over the last couple of years. Drink from 2024-2047.

The 2020 Beauregard is gorgeous. Dark, ample and expressive, the 2020 offers tremendous depth and textural intensity from start to finish. Black cherry, gravel, incense, tobacco, espresso and chocolate all race out of the glass. Even with all of its obvious intensity, the 2020 remains wonderfully fresh and vibrant. It's a superb wine by any measure.

The 2020 Beauregard has a well-defined bouquet with raspberry and cranberry fruit, cedar and light pencil box aromas. This fulfills its promise from barrel, while the palate is well balanced with pliant tannins, fresh and saline with a slightly ferrous finish. This is an excellent Beauregard that will give up to 20 years of drinking pleasure.

A very concentrated and chewy red with lots of blackberry, chocolate, nutmeg and hazelnut character. Full and powerful. Lots of tannins, too. Needs time to soften. Extracted, but will come true with bottle age. From organically grown grapes. 70% merlot and 30% cabernet franc. From organically grown grapes. Drink after 2026.

High levels of Cabernet Franc comes through in waves of fennel, sage, plums, damson, juicy red fruit. This has punch, with wild strawberry, raspberry coulis, edges of tomato leaf. Complex, enjoyable and rather brilliant - this is an upscore from En Primeur. 37hl/ha yields, certified organic for 10 years.

Nice perfume of raspberry, cassis, ripe herbs, discreet oak. The palate combines purity, ripeness and freshness with good definition and length.

From another estate that’s been on the uptick lately, the 2020 Château Beauregard offers a beautiful perfume of jammy black and blue fruits as well as classic Pomerol floral and earthy mineral aromas and flavors. Fleshy, soft, up-front, yet concentrated, with a solid spine of tannins, this is another one of those Pomerols that delivers wonderful purity of fruit along with a rare mix of richness and elegance. It will drink well for 20-25 years.

The 2020 Beauregard was picked from September 8 at 37hl/ha (winemaker Vincent Priou told me that having been organic for almost a decade, the vineyard is very stable in terms of yield). Matured in 45% new oak, it has a very pure and refined bouquet, one of the best that I have found on a Beauregard at this stage. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins, a slightly grainy texture and a spicy undercurrent. Very cohesive and silky-smooth on the finish. This just might be the best Beauregard made to date. Bravo!

Spice, coffee, black and blue fruits and touches of redcurrant leaf. Sappy and powerful, not as generous as many in Pomerol, but there is always a good level of Cabernet Franc that gives this a slightly austere structure when young - will widen and soften over the next few years, and it stands out for its kick of minerality. Tasted twice, and there is some notable oak, but excellent quality. Ageing for 16 months in barrel. Finished everything by 22 September, their final yields were 37hl/ha (they have 1/3 of the vineyard at 9,000v/ha). Certified organic for 10 years.

Deep garnet in color, the wine quickly shows off its floral aromatics along with spice, licorice and black plums. Soft and silky, polished, fresh and elegant, the chocolate centric finish with all its ripe, dark red pit fruits tastes as good as it feels. Beauregard has really been upping their game the last couple of years. 92-94

Deep purple-black colored, the 2020 Beauregard gives up pronounced notes of baked black plums, blackberry pie and black cherry preserves, plus hints of tar, aniseed, tilled loam and chargrill, with a touch of fried herbs. The medium to full-bodied palate offers chewy tannins and soft acidity to support the black berry and savory layers, finishing on a stewed tea note. The tannins should become a lot more polished after barrel aging, but based on this tasting, I've been conservative with my score.

Very impressive purity of fruit with blackberry, black-olive, and earth character. Some black truffle, too. It’s full-bodied and very compact with firm, racy tannins. Goes on for a very long time. Could be better than the super 2016. From organically grown grapes. 70% merlot and 30% cabernet franc.

Dark purple colour with violet hue and black core. Very elegant nose with fragrant fruit, blackberries, elderberries, mulberries and ripe plums. Elegant spiciness and hints of violets in the background. Vanilla and balmy spices as well as hints of dark chocolate. On the palate well structured with freshness and elegance, very persistent taste with ripe fruits and balmy spices, excellent depth and length.
