Yquem-Sauternes 2008 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48

After a mild and relatively dry start to the year, the lows cooled in March, leading to late budburst. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 On April 7, the thermometer fell to -1.3°C under shelter, and the vines were already developed enough to suffer damage. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 Fortunately, this frost, the heaviest since 1991, did not affect the property only at the southern limit of the gravel plateau and at the bottom of the slopes, but it had no effect on the characteristic clay "croups" of Yquem. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 On this same date, a particularly rainy phase began. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 It lasts until mid-June with 3 days of rain out of 4, i.e. 50% of precipitation above average! 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 The temperatures until May 24 are well above the norm (+ 1.8°C) and this "tropical" climate requires significant and careful work from all winegrowers and winegrowers (suckering, lifting, chipping or ploughing). 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 A first alternation then occurs with the sudden transition to a very cool phase (- 0.6°C) until mid-June. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 This humid cold on the flower leads to a slight sagging on certain sectors that are a little vigorous, thus reproducing a natural thinning. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 These regular hot/cold changes occur curiously throughout the summer, punctuated from the end of May to mid-September by 3 times 3 cool weeks interspersed with 3 times 2 hot weeks. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 The rains stop abruptly in mid-June. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 Four wet days until mid-August (80% dry days and – 40% rainfall), these conditions definitively remove the risk of mildew and provide the vintage with the essential dose of sunshine. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 A new very disturbed beach is set up in August, with 2 rainy days out of 3 and 50% excess, coupled with 2 hot weeks at the end of the month (+ 1.3°C). 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 These conditions raise fears of too early an onset of rot on a harvest with heterogeneous maturity. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 Fortunately, the new temperature shift (towards the cold) which then began (25 days at -2.2°C below normal) also combined with 17 days without rain. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 This coldness and this dryness will block any risk of development of sour rot or gnats while allowing a perfect and slow ripening of the berries. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 These 3 unexpected weeks are a miracle. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48

Tasted single blind against its peers. The Yquem 2008 is easy to spot in a blind line-up: it is (to quote Tina Turner) simply the best. It has a subtle, delicate but very pretty bouquet with fine definition and astounding minerality. The palate is beautifully poised, tense and tightly coiled on the entry and then it just explodes in the mouth with pure, unbridled, joyous botrytized fruit struck through with a silver thread of acidity. It displays exemplary tension and freshness, along with great persistency in the mouth. This is an outstanding Sauternes 2008 and another impressive Yquem. Tasted January 2012.

Beautiful lemon cream, chamomile and fried pineapple notes, with a refreshing, almost floral edge running along as well. Creamy coconut and green plum notes fill in on the finish, which has admirable length. A restrained, lighter style, with lovely precision. Drink now through 2035. 10,000 cases made.

Coming in with 139 degrees residual sugar and a pH of 4.75, this is an Yquem that is unequivocally top of the pile in 2008. A light straw color with green tints in the glass. The bouquet is just wonderful, very perfumed with aromas of apricot, acacia honey and white flowers. A degree less clarity than the 2007, but perhaps more nuanced, more honeyed. The palate is a little more viscous than the 2007, lacquers the mouth with honey, apricot and orange zest. Very harmonious, the finish vibrant and edgy, real tension and energy in this Yquem. Very focused on the finish – not the “peacocks” tail of flavors that one finds on truly great vintages. But there is a surreal level of elegance and poise – an understated Yquem that should age effortlessly and returning to the glass it graces you with hints of almond and a dash of spice. In 2008, the king is king. P.S. RMP rated this blend of 80% Semillon and 20% Sauvignon (94-96)

Quiet on the nose. More spiced pear and apricot than orange. Lovely concentration. Spiced power, depth and quite warm on the finish. Fresh in a powerful rather than a delicate way. Dense and long. Rich and well integrated oak though there's lots of spice all the way through. A less delicate style than many in this vintage. (JH) Drink 2018-36

There is a lovely purity to the fruit and clear botrytis concentration, if less than in the great years. Has all the hallmarks of a fine, elegant Yquem. A very polished, well-presented sample. Drink 2013-2035.

Lemon peel, spice and candied fruit on the nose, with hints of botrytis. Very balanced and refined, with a full body. Long, delicate and pretty.
