Vray Croix de Gay - Pomerol 2023

A new era for this jewel of Pomerol

In 2020, Les Terroirs de Suravenir, a subsidiary of the Arkea Credit Mutuel Group that already owns Château Calon Ségur, invested on the right bank by buying châteaux Prieuré, Vray Croix de Gay and Siaurac. True to their values, they have a long-term approach. In their ambitious development project, the teams are guided by the respect of history and the revelation of the potential of the terroir.

Château Vray Croix de Gay, in the heart of the Pomerol Appellation

Jewel of the collection, with an area of 3.67 hectares, Chateau Vray Croix de Gay is composed of 3 parcels, located on the Graves plateau, the best part of the appellation. The largest parcel is located between Pétrus and Château La Fleur.

The 2023 vintage:

2023 is the symbol of the renewal of the last three years, as Vray Croix de Gay takes on a new label.

Violets, chocolate, truffle, black cherries, and licorice form the perfume. On the palate, the medium-bodied wine is elegant, supple, soft, and silky. The wine is fresh, vibrant, clean, and pure, finishing with creamy, chocolate-covered cherries, black raspberries, and a hint of Indian spice. The wine blends 98% Merlot with 2% Cabernet Franc. This is the second vintage produced by the same team that also makes Calon Segur. Drink from 2027-2045.

The 2023 Vray Croix de Gay is a very pretty, brilliant wine. Brisk acids perk up a core of dark-toned fruit. Grilled herbs, new leather, lavender and licorice are nicely sculpted. I especially admire the wine's energy. Floral overtones lift the finish. I would give this a few years in bottle, as the acids and tannins are a bit prominent. Harvest began on September 7 with the Merlots and wrapped up on September 20 with the Francs.

The 2023 Vray Croix de Gay has a light but well-defined nose, raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, delicate but I admire its focus and charm. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly gritty tannins on the entry. There is a little more structure than I noticed from barrel, dark berry fruit laced with graphite and a touch of tobacco that renders the finish a little "Médocian." This has developed well during its élevage and deserves a higher score.

A beautifully knit red with aromas of blackberries, plums and roasted coffee beans. It's medium-bodied with creamy and round tannins and a delicious finish. Savory and succulent. 98% merlot and 2% cabernet. Drink or hold.

The wine is fresh, vibrant, clean, and pure, finishing with chocolate-covered cherries, black raspberries, and a hint of peppery spice, that only shows up at the end of the finish. The wine blends 98% Merlot with 2% Cabernet Franc, 14.5% ABV. This is the second vintage produced by the same team that also makes Calon Segur. Drink from 2026-2042. 91-93 Pts.

The 2023 Vray Croix de Gay is a classy, elegant wine. Dark red cherry, plum, mocha, licorice and sweet spice are nicely pushed forward. Pretty floral overtones lift the finish. This succulent, racy Pomerol is all sensuality and understatement. Tasted two times.

The 2023 Vray Croix de Gay was cropped at 34hL/ha and aged in 30% new oak. (From 2022, there is also a redesigned label). There is something sedate about the nose that gradually unfurls: fine lift and perfume, with subtle black truffle scents following through. The palate is medium-bodied, the oak particularly conspicuous and imparting a creamy texture. Showing modest depth, it’s just missing a little grip and heft on the finish, where the wood tannins show a bit more than I would have liked. This is a more elegant take on the vintage, and there is nothing wrong with that, but watch those wood tannins once this is bottled–they need to fully integrate.

Incorporating fully 19% Cabernet Franc, the 2023 Vray Croix de Gay is charming and velvety, bursting with aromas of petals, plums, orange zest and spices. Medium to full-bodied, supple and layered, its suave, vibrant profile reflects the choice to pick comparatively early, beginning on September 5.
