Vik - Valle de Cachapoal 2021

VIK, the first Chilean cru of the Cachapoal Valley.

Created by Alex and Carrie VIK, the vineyard was born amidst the foothills of the Andes mountains, within the Millahue Valley: 4,300 hectares of astonishing Chilean wilderness where they planted over 327 hectares of vines. Holism is the concept that best reflects the VIK spirit. It is the perfect union of humans and nature as an integrated whole and Cristian Vallejo, Vik's chief winemaker, is considered as a "terroir purist".

VIK, a new expression of Cabernet: finesse, elegance, complexity, intensity, length and freshness,  unique characteristics that all together level up to extraordinary. VIK is a remarkable visionary Bordeaux style blend.

The 2021 VIK blends 77% Cabernet Franc and 23% Cabernet Sauvignon from Millahue, with 10% aged in amphora. The nose is layered with red fruit, cassis and blackberry, plus marmalade, cedar, ash and garrigue. Juicy, crisp and fresh, the palate offers fine-grained tannins, black fruit and spice. Slightly mentholated on the finish, the 2021 is structured and full of nuance.

N°36 TOP 100 WINE SPECTATOR

Alluring notes of dried violet, olive and black cherry lead off in this elegantly textured version, with just a bit of sneaky concentration swelling midpalate around fresh acidity and notes of peppercorn and plum, finishing around well-integrated tannins and hints of apple wood. Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2038. 20,000 cases made, 2,000 cases imported. —AR

VIK 2021 (Cachapoal Valley; 23% Cabernet Sauvignon; 77% Cabernet Franc; 90% aged for 20 months in French oak barrels and for 6 months in ‘Barroir’ barrels, which are re-cycled and re-used after 3 uses from fresh staves and toasted with locally-sourced wood; 10% aged in similarly re-cycled and refreshed amphorae, ‘amphoir’; 14.5% alcohol; tasted with the commercial team from VIK; Christián Vallejo is the wine-maker; night-harvested to lock in the natural freshness). Spicy, exotic, very ‘VIK’. Clove, curry leaf, Szechuan peppercorns, black peppercorns, rose peppercorns, cinnamon, nutmeg, plum (baked and fresh) and assorted dark and red berry fruits. Bramble and mulberry. Toasted brioche and naan. A little balsamic note, a touch of tomato purée, black tea leaf, a touch of lavendar. Mocha and grated ultra-dark chocolate. The oak a little more tempered than in previous vintages. A nice ample opening. Quite grippy tannins but that don’t significantly constrain the initial breadth, but which give this a lovely flow over the palate as it evolves. Very shapely and with quite a dynamic mouthfeel – the textures change, becoming more and more tactile. Quite limpid at first but the tannins pixilate this more and more towards the almost crumbly finish. Impressive structured and quite considerable. Chewy but always fresh. Remains just the right side of dry. 97.

The 2021 Vik is a blend of 77% Cabernet Franc and 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from Millahue in the Cachapoal Valley. Aged for 26 months in barrels and 10% in amphorae, this dark garnet wine reveals aromas of blackberry and raspberry, complemented by notes of ash, boldo, bay leaf and undergrowth, all set against a backdrop of cedar. On the palate, it is dry, delicate, and finely grained, with a juicy and vibrant mouthfeel that departs from the oxidative, tired style of the past. With the blend now excluding Carménère and increasing the proportion of Franc, the wine has shed its previous clingy and bold character. The 2021 vintage is precise, slightly compact and absolutely flavorful.

Deep plum colour, a clear smudge of grilled brambled fruits, blackberries and damson, tar, olives, confident and vivid, mint leaf freshness from the Cabernet Franc gives a lift and shot of floral-tinged freshness that is welcome with the gourmet cocoa-dusted tannins. From vines planted first in 2006, first vintage 2010. Christian Vallejo winemaker (had previously worked at both Ch Margaux and Ch Berliquet in Bordeaux). 90% of the wine is aged in 'recycled' barrels (meaning that they make the barrels onsite from Sylvain staves sourced in France, toasted locally in Chile, while the remaining 10% is aged in locally-sourced clay amphora made by a Chilean artisan. Native yeast fermentation, 2.65ph, 3.6/l residual sugar. Tasted twice. On the Place since 2023.
