Showing a mineral-driven personality with a distinctive, stony edge, this wine has saline tannins, silky textures and real density in the finish. This is a wine to age.

The 2015 Vieux Château Mazerat, which you could view as Jonathan Maltus' "second in command" after Le Dôme, is a blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc picked on October 6 and 12 respectively, and matured in 80% new oak. It has a tightly wound bouquet with black cherry, bilberry and cold stone, a floral note emerging after a minute in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied but there is more fatness and density here compared to Jonathan's other 2015 single parcel offerings from Le Pontet and Le Carré. Plenty of "rondeur" here, perhaps because the pH is just a little higher, the finish well balanced, clean and fresh. I look forward to retasting this in bottle.

A Jonathan Maltus (Le Dôme) wine from a parcel touching Angélus. Fine, opulent texture masks a big tannic frame. Powerful and long on the finish. A strapping wine that should age.

The 2015 Vieux Château Mazerat is another super-ripe, dark, powerful Saint-Émilion. There is impressive density in the glass, but like all of the 2015s here the Mazerat is lacking in freshness and energy. It will be interesting to see what happens as the wine goes into bottle.

95–97. Barrel Sample. This is an impressively perfumed wine, with fragrant black fruits and rich tannins moving together. It has a sumptuous character, powered by fruit as much as by tannins. It is a very fine, rich and dense wine that will age well.

Belle couleur intense. Nez au fruité crémeux. Bouche tendre, fruitée, savoureuse, juteuse, juste un brin âpre dans la persistance. Bonne longueur.

Soft and delicious young red with plum and walnut aromas and flavors. Medium body.

This has some heft, thanks in part to a wall of toasty vanilla and ganache, yet there’s ample density to the core of plum and currant fruit. The tannins are velvety, as per the vintage. Just need to see if this can handle its oak.—J.M.

Le volume et la profondeur de cette cuvée élaborée par Jonathan Maltus forcent l'admiration. Proche d'Angélus, ce terroir a livré un vin satiné, opaque, qui reste très précis dans ses contours.
