The 2022 Valandraud Blanc unexpectedly presents a crisp and fresh profile, with a lively acidity and an evocative aroma of flint and floral salt. The fragrances of syrupy pineapple and guava do not immediately unfold, instead, they remain hidden behind notes of roasted sunflower seeds and toasted almonds. Just when you think the tasting is finished, they sneak in quietly, enticing you to take another sip. The jelly-like texture is light and smooth, with no heaviness whatsoever, while the wine’s delicate structure subtly softens the 15.5% alcohol content and evokes a rhythmic sensation as you breathe.

A blend of 53% Sauvignon Gris, 40% Sauvignon Blanc, and 7% Sémillon, the 2022 Château Valandraud Blanc is another sensational white from Thunevin, offering a gorgeous nose of lemon curd, white flowers, chalk, and minty herbs. Medium to full-bodied, with a focused, elegant, and seamless mouthfeel, it has integrated acidity and an undeniable limestone-driven minerality. Aged for 10 months in 80% new oak barrels and 20% clay amphora, this should drink well for 15+ years. Total production: 583 cases.

The 2022 Valandraud Blanc is quite discrete on the nose with scents of pear, vervain and light beeswax, all of which are well defined but require aeration to hit their stride. The palate is fresh and vibrant on entry, very harmonious with lovely weight as notes of orange rind and peach skin give way to light chamomile on the very satisfying finish. This is a lovely white Valandraud that will age well in bottle (if you can resist temptation).

The 2022 Valandraud Blanc is terrific. Dried pear, white flowers, mint and a hint of spice open first. Creamy and resonant on the palate, the Blanc is a gorgeous white for the dinner table. A few years in bottle will allow its textural breadth to emerge more fully. Readers should expect a decidedly rich, heady wine.

Rich and ripe, a lovely intensity of lemon, green apple, pear, apricot and peach on the palate. Succulent, lively, round, juicy and weighty, lovely control and intensity of flavour. Still compact, a little shy, but layered and complex with crisp aspects as well as spiced ones giving nuance and interest. Good persistence and feeling of refinement. The sharp acidity really balances the richness of the vintage with power, opulence but control and character. A force in the glass, but very appealing. Harvest 1-13 September, ageing on the lees, 80% new barrels, 20% in amphora, less than 10 months. 3.15pH. 6,000 bottles.

The 2022 Valandraud Blanc was picked 1-13 September and matured in 80% new oak. It has a vivacious nose with gooseberry, citrus fruit, Vervane and light crushed rock scents. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh with a smooth, waxy-textured finish. Lovely build to this white Valandraud with a touch of wild peach popping up on the aftertaste. Very fine.

The flagship white from Jean-Luc needs to be tasted to be believed, and I continue to think this is one of the top whites in Bordeaux. A blend of 45% Sauvignon Gris, 40% Sauvignon Blanc, and the rest Sémillon, it has a killer bouquet of honeyed lime, flowers, salty minerality, and exotic citrus fruits. These carry to a medium to full-bodied white with integrated yet vibrant acidity, beautiful balance, and a great finish. It will evolve for two decades.

Lemon rind, pomelo, vanilla, spice, flowers and nuts create the attention-grabbing perfume. The wine is as fresh as it is rich, and creamy-textured. The salt-tinged finish of green apples, yellow citrus, pink grapefruit and touch of chalk really sticks with you, due to all its fruits and freshness. The wine blends 45% Sauvignon Gris, 40% Sauvignon Blanc and 15% Semillon. 15% ABV, 3.15 pH. Only 500 cases were produced. Drink from 2025-2035.

A serious and very linear white with fine phenolics that run the length of the wine. Medium to full body. Complex fruit character of melon, grapefruit and peaches. Excellent finish. Dry and energetic. 40% sauvignon gris, 40% sauvignon blanc and 20% semillon.
