Trottevieille - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2019

Château Trottevieille: Unveiling the Elegance of an Exceptional Terroir

The name is told to be derived from the fact that an old lady lived there in this chartreuse in the 14th century. This lady would frequently stroll down to a nearby crossroads where stagecoaches made their stop during their journeys from Bordeaux. Given her penchant for hurrying to catch these coaches, the people of Saint-Émilion affectionately referred to her as 'la trotte vieille'—the 'old trot.'

Elevated to the Premier Grand Cru of Saint-Émilion classification in 1955, Château TrotteVieille is celebrated as one of the finest wines in Saint-Émilion. Marcel Borie, smitten by its charm, acquired the property in 1947, and today, the estate is overseen by the Castéja family.

Situated on a superb slope to the east of the village of Saint-Émilion, the vineyard encompasses a 12-hectare terroir, evenly divided between Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon. Remarkably, Château TrotteVieille remains one of the rare estates to still cultivate ancient Cabernet Franc vines, tracing their roots back over 140 years, pre-dating the devastating phylloxera outbreak.

Trotte Vieille 2019 showed me the image of a fair lady with "French elegance". With nearly 50% Cabernet Franc, it brings a violet fragrance that flutters in the wind, leaving the whole aroma exquisite. On the palate, it feels crisp and juicy from the outside but also dense and full-bodied from the inside. Pure clove cinnamon, elegant herbal spices and the saltiness of the limestone plateau make this wine adorned with a marvelous finish. Aromas and flavors of dark fruit, plums, mushrooms, pine cones, cedar and tile. Full-bodied, yet reserved, with ultra-fine tannins that spread across the palate. So layered and beautiful. Hints of crushed stone and deep earth on the finish. Steely at the end. Give this time. Try after 2025.

Gorgeously pure notes of blue fruits, violets, spring flowers, and graphite emerge from the 2019 Château Trotte Vieille, a silky, concentrated, sensational Saint-Emilion. Clearly the finest vintage from this château I've tasted, it's medium to full-bodied, has a layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. It's a "wow" wine in the vintage that can be drunk today or cellared for two decades. Bravo!

Aromas of cherries, sweet berries and plums, framed by notions of raw cocoa, loamy soil, spices and licorice, introduce the 2019 Trotte Vieille, a medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy wine that's broad, textural and enveloping, built around succulent acids and ripe, powdery tannins that gently assert themselves on the finish. 93+

The 2019 Trotte Vieille is burly, deep and powerful, not to mention loaded with character. Espresso, chocolate, iron, leather, licorice and sweet spice add to an impression of virile power and intensity. Big, strapping tannins add to an impression of muscle. The 2019 needs time, but it is a hugely promising wine. It is also one of the most tannic wines in Saint-Émilion.

The 2019 Trotte Vieille has closed up a little on the nose, yet there are still very attractive black cherries and iodine scents on the nose that gradually unfold with aeration. A touch of fresh fig appears in the background. The well-balanced palate delivers pure blackberry and raspberry fruit laced with graphite and minerals. Almost Left Bank in style, this shows great clarity and fans out wonderfully on the finish. Superb.

The 2019 TrotteVieille is rich and explosive in the glass. A whole range of intense floral notes appears first, followed by inky dark fruit, espresso, licorice, new leather and cedar overtones that open up over time. A wine of power and stature, the 2019 is drop-dead gorgeous. There is so much complexity to the 2019 that it is hard to move on in this tasting. In a word: dazzling.

More blue fruits, spring flowers, and violet notes emerge from the 2019 Château Trotte Vieille, a medium to full-bodied, beautifully elegant, silky 2019. I love its tannin quality, and it has nicely integrated acidity as well as a great finish. It’s one of the finest vintages of this cuvée I’ve tasted.

The 2019 Trotte Vieille has a ripe black cherry, raspberry preserve and iodine-scented bouquet that becomes floral with continued aeration. This is an exuberant nose that displays impressive purity. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit laced with black pepper and a pinch of sea salt, very cohesive and demonstrating fine grip on the finish. This is a classy offering from a much improved Saint-Émilion, especially in terms of the detail on the finish. Excellent. Tasted from bottle and half-bottle.

Dark garnet in hue, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated and intense. The unique sensation of minerality is on full display here with all its rocks, stones and oceanic character. The fruit is vibrant, round, sweet, long and clean. Everything is in harmony here. The complex aromatic's along with the richly textured, concentrated mouthfeel, silky tannins and long finish is just great. Give it 7-9 years of aging before pulling a cork and enjoy it over the next 20 years or so. Made from a blend of 49% Cabernet Franc, 48% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. 94-96 Pts

A really classy, beautiful red with seduction and force at the finish. Aromas and flavors of currants, wet earth and truffles, as well as mushrooms. Full bodied, tight and tannic. Toned and steely. A new, traditional style. 49% cabernet franc, 48% merlot and 3% cabernet sauvignon.

Blackberry, raspberry and cappuccino-laced liquorice notes on the attack. As ever with Trotte Vieille there is clear and present austerity that comes through as chalky tannins and fresh acidities that scrape through the finish along slate walls adding a kick of salinity. Takes its time to open and is really one you need to sit with. As it relaxes in the glass the peony and iris floral notes become clear, showcasing the Cabernet Franc in the wine, with smoked coffee beans ensuring a gourmet edge. Good stuff.
