Trottevieille - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2017

Château Trottevieille: Unveiling the Elegance of an Exceptional Terroir

The name is told to be derived from the fact that an old lady lived there in this chartreuse in the 14th century. This lady would frequently stroll down to a nearby crossroads where stagecoaches made their stop during their journeys from Bordeaux. Given her penchant for hurrying to catch these coaches, the people of Saint-Émilion affectionately referred to her as 'la trotte vieille'—the 'old trot.'

Elevated to the Premier Grand Cru of Saint-Émilion classification in 1955, Château TrotteVieille is celebrated as one of the finest wines in Saint-Émilion. Marcel Borie, smitten by its charm, acquired the property in 1947, and today, the estate is overseen by the Castéja family.

Situated on a superb slope to the east of the village of Saint-Émilion, the vineyard encompasses a 12-hectare terroir, evenly divided between Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon. Remarkably, Château TrotteVieille remains one of the rare estates to still cultivate ancient Cabernet Franc vines, tracing their roots back over 140 years, pre-dating the devastating phylloxera outbreak.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Trotte Vieille gives up notes of baked plums, stewed black cherries and dried mulberries with touches of spice cake, chocolate box and new leather with a waft of cedar. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has great density and weight with a firm level of rounded tannins and lovely freshness, finishing on a compelling mineral note. Drinking Window : 2023 - 2048

The 2017 TrotteVieille is a deep, beguiling and super-intriguing wine. Mocha, tobacco and spice start to emerge from the glass. There is good depth overall, but the oak imprint is strong to the point of being overpowering.

Wonderfully perfumed with decadence and richness, showing crushed berries, fresh flowers, wet earth, orange peel and peaches. Mushrooms, too. Full-bodied, yet very tight and reserved with ultra-fine yet strong tannins. It goes on for minutes on the palate, giving a balanced and beautiful feel all along the way. A blend of 56% cabernet franc, 43% merlot and 1% cabernet sauvignon. Try after 2023 and onward.

Nez fruits rouges, bouche élégante, fruitée, tendue, tanins fins, joli fruit en finale, vrai vin de calcaire.

The 2017 Château Trotte Vieille comes from the upper plateau and is 55% Cabernet Franc, 44% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s a pretty, elegant, incredibly floral wine (no doubt due to the high Cabernet Franc) that’s medium-bodied, balanced, and silky. It’s aging in 100% new French oak, but it certainly doesn’t taste like it, and it shines for its purity of fruit, fine tannin, and undeniable elegance.

Grand.

Cabernet Franc takes the leading role in the 2017 Trotte Vieille. Vibrant and succulent, with terrific depth, the 2017 has so much to say. It is also one of the most unique wines in all of Saint-Émilion. There is plenty to admire. The 2017 spent approximately four weeks on the skins. New oak is 100%, light toast barrels. The 2017 has the potential to surprise down the line.

The 2017 TrotteVieille was impacted by the frost, more the Merlot than the Cabernet Franc according to Frédéric Castèja. It was picked between 21 and 26 September. It has a tightly wound bouquet with black cherries, cedar, juniper and a light seawater aroma. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, quite structured in the mouth with plenty of tobacco-infused, black peppery dark fruit towards the finish with quite a long peppery aftertaste thanks to the Cabernet Franc.

About 20% of the vines were affected by frost this year. A blend of 56% Cabernet Franc, 43% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2017 Trotte Vieille is medium to deep garnet-purple in color and redolent of warm plums, crushed blackberries and blackcurrant cordial with touches of Indian spices, violets and a hint of menthol. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, grainy tannins and great freshness, with an expressive core and long finish.

This has an impressive balance, hugely powerful with textural raspberry, redcurrant and bilberry fruit - a lovely autumnal register. There is even more Cabernet Franc in here than usual, and it stands out for its austerity, but that is to be expected at this stage, and the zip and bounce suggest it will age very well. Harvested 21-26 September. 100% new oak.

Always a serious style of wine, this vintage has added intense fruits as well as tannins. Its concentration and dry core promise long aging while its fruit weight and fine acidity result in a bright finish. Drink from 2024.

This shows wonderful depth and tannin quality with incredible elegance and completeness. Medium to full body and racy tannins. Strength, too. It’s the acid that drives the the tannins and keeps them serious and fine.

This crackles, featuring a savory streak amid a mix of damson plum and red currant flavors. Slightly high-pitched, with a racy mineral- and herb-infused finish.—J.M.
