It will be difficult to pick a favorite between Troplong-Mondot's exquisite 1994 and 1995 St.-Emilions. The 1994 possesses more grip, tannin, and structure, as well as an opaque black/purple color, and an impressively-endowed nose of black fruits, charcoal, spice, and pain grillee. Medium to full-bodied, with superb purity, richness, and layers of ripe black fruits, this moderately tannic, authoritatively-flavored wine will require 2-4 years of cellaring; it will keep for 15 or more. Unquestionably one of the stars of the vintage, it is significantly better than just about every other 1994 premier grand cru classe St.-Emilion. All of the wines in this segment were tasted between March 19 and March 28 in Bordeaux. Most of the important wines from both the 1994 and 1995 vintages were tasted three separate times during my ten-day stay in Bordeaux.
