Tronquoy - Saint-Estèphe 2020

Château Tronquoy, a nonconformist Saint-Estèphe wine

The history of Château Tronquoy began in 1791 with François Tronquoy, who was a visionary in his actions and nonconformist at heart. This spirited founder has created the second oldest vineyard of Saint-Estèphe.

For 3 centuries, this cru has been cultivating its singularity in a form of impertinence. The Bouygues family, owner of the estate since 2006, wanted to pay tribute to this past and highlight its values of excellence and innovation by freeing Tronquoy from conventions. In 2022, Tronquoy-Lalande has become Tronquoy and its label now adorns a unique blue color. As for the wine, it remained faithful to its identity: proposing a rare polyvalence and a great freshness. It combines a seductive youth and a remarkable ageing potential.

The estate's privileged terroir lies on one of the Médoc's most prestigious geological terraces, known as "Terrasse 3". The deep clay-gravel soils ensure a regular supply of water to the vines.

The 2020 vintage

The 2020 vintage was shaped by highly contrasting weather conditions. A mild, wet winter led to early budbreak, followed by a spring alternating between sunshine and heavy rainfall, which triggered mildew pressure and reduced yields. Despite slight coulure, flowering was rapid and even by late May. The hot, dry summer, marked by two heatwaves, caused water stress from late July, alleviated by clay subsoil reserves and mid-August rains. Early September brought berry weight loss, but late-September rainfall allowed Cabernet Sauvignon to reach full ripeness.

Harvesting took place in excellent sanitary conditions from September 11 to 28, delivering healthy fruit. Vinification quickly revealed concentration and deep color. Sixteen distinct lots were identified, reflecting the estate’s terroirs, with Merlot traditionally forming the backbone of the Grand Vin blend.

Tasting notes:

Château Tronquoy 2020 reveals an intense, dark red colour. The nose is charming, with notes of candied black fruit and roasted notes reminiscent of chocolate and vanilla. The palate is enveloping and offers aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and blueberry. A full-body wine supported by a beautiful intensity. The finish is fresh and long.

The 2020 Tronquoy-Lalande puts in the surprise performance of the tasting with a quite stellar showing. It has superb mineralité on the nose, very well defined and full of vigor—perhaps the most sophisticated within the flight of Saint-Estèphe wines. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins. It's a "solid" and structured wine, but it also conveys delineation and tension toward the hoisin-tinged finish. Very persistent on the finish, this is a class act. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Sleek and fresh, with a core of damson plum and loganberry fruit racing along, flecked with lilac, savory and iron notes along the way. Pretty, lingering finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Best from 2024 through 2034. 608 cases made.

Coming from a vintage compared to 2016 and 2019 by the château, the 2020 Château Tronquoy-Lalande checks in as 52% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Petit Verdot, hitting 13.5% alcohol. Beautiful cassis, plums, damp earth, and chocolate notes all emerge from this beauty, which is a layered, medium to full-bodied, gorgeously textured Saint-Estèphe. The tannins are present yet polished, and it has a great mid-palate and outstanding length. I'd wager this is one of the finest vintages of this cuvée to date. It has the purity of fruit and opulence to shine even today, yet I suspect it won't hit prime time for 7-8 years, and it should have 20 years of prime drinking at that point.

Gorgeous milk chocolate aroma on the nose, alongside brambly, ripe blackcurrant and black cherry. Plump fruit alongside marked acidity in the mouth, with a crushed stone aspect to the finish. Svelte, easy, pristine yet deep, with serious dark fruit and a grippy end.

Dark fruits with sweet spices, cocoa, cedar and tar. Some wet earth and tobacco, too. Medium- to full-bodied with firm, chewy tannin build up and bright acidity. Juicy and vivid dark fruit character comes after. Polished with notes of crushed stones. Try after 2025.

Seriously impressive, close to 2016 in feel, richly texured, combining the power of St Estèphe with reserve and pared-back elegance, a ton of black fruits. It remains tight on the finish for now, but the tannins are confident rather than restrictive, suggesting long ageing potential. Higher Cabernet Sauvignon than usual, partly because of the mildew that impacted the Merlot, and partly because the Cabernet Sauvignon reacted so well to the vintage conditions. 3.74ph, harvest September 11 to 28.

Delicious, this is a great Tronquoy, full of bright berry fruits. Pretty intense, and swaggering in its tannins, austere and bedded down right now but well held together, with the walls and floors of a solidly-constructed Cabernet wine that is going to age well. A yield of 29hl/ha, with a little more Cabernet Sauvignon than usual in the blend. Harvest September 11th to 28th. Here they got 60mm of rain in both August and September.
