Tour Saint-Christophe - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2023

The Vignobles K group

Groupe Vignobles K is a family business founded by Peter Kwok. It comprises 7 properties located on the best terroirs of 4 prestigious Bordeaux appellations, including Château Bellefont-Belcier (Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classé), Château Haut-Brisson (Saint Emilion Grand Cru), Château Tour Saint Christophe (Saint Emilion Grand Cru) and core Enclos Tourmaline (Pomerol). The group is owned by Peter Kwok, who loves Bordeaux wines and, more broadly, French culture.

Château Tour Saint Christophe, vines on singular narrow terraces

Château Tour Saint Christophe is located in Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes at the frontiers of Saint-Émilion. The vineyard is a unique feature in Saint-Emilion, as it is partly planted on narrow terraces where the vineyard is tended in tight rows. This cascading landscape unfolds on the hillside of Cassevert overlooking the Saint Laurent valley.

Château Tour Saint Christophe was acquired by Peter Kwok and his daughter Karen in 2012.

The 2023 Tour Saint Christophe has a well-defined, dark chocolate-tinged bouquet that is fresh and becomes quite minty with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite fleshy on the mid-palate with a nicely controlled, quite tensile finish. This will do nicely.

Excellent depth to this exciting St.-Emilion, with aromas of dark cherries, black plums, chalk and touches of cocoa powder and graphite. Structured and flavorful, with a full body and dense, chalky tannins. This is polished with fine, chalky tannins. Dense but not chunky or heavy. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc. From organically grown grapes. Better from 2027.

A killer bottle of wine in the making, the 2023 Château Tour Saint Christophe checks in as a normal blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that's resting in just 25% new French oak, with the balance in once-used barrels and a small amount in foudre. It sports a deep purple hue as well as a rocking bouquet of cassis and black raspberries interwoven with spring flowers, hints of leather, and a brilliant sense of minerality. Medium to full-bodied, with juicy acidity, ripe tannins, and beautiful overall balance, it's another riveting wine from this estate.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Tour Saint Christophe reveals a very pretty perfume of violets, black cherries, and mulberries followed by nuances of Sichuan pepper and cumin seed. The medium to full-bodied palate has vibrant black berry flavors with a velvety texture and great tension, finishing with a spicy kick.

Tour St-Christophe (Saint Émilion; 80% Merlot; 20% Cabernet Franc; a final yield of 46 hl/ha; pH 3.35; 14.8% alcohol; from 23 hectares on clay-limestone; tasted first at the Association des Grands Crus Classés at Dassault and then at Bellefont Belcier with Emmanuelle Fulchi and Jean-Christophe Meyrou; a generous yield, as at all of the Vignobles K estates with essentially no mildew). A lovely limestone signature to the aromatics such that one can almost feel the calcaire tannins before putting this in one’s mouth. Gorgeous crushed blue-purple berry fruits, generously enrobed in graphite. Peonies and wisteria, parfumier’s essence of violet, a hint of lavender. And a little raspberry freshness with aeration. There’s a generous natural sweetness to this. Vibrant yet soft on the attack. A tight structure, beautifully framed by the structuring beady limestone tannins. Limestone salinity and liquorice notes too. Dense and compact, precise and focussed, this is another great success. Reliably excellent and here with even more clarity, precision and amplitude. Brilliantly sapid and with a wonderful pinch from the grippy crumbly limestone tannins. What’s not to like?

Black raspberries, flowers, black cherries, licorice, and plums pack the perfume. The palate is vivacious, with layers of sweet, black, and red plums, cherries, and raspberries. Texturally, the wine is perfectly poised between its energetic and soft, polished side, finishing with accents of salt, and spice that complement its sweet, red fruits. The wine is made from blending 80% Merlot with 20% Cabernet Franc. 14.8% ABV, 3.35 pH. The harvest took place from September 18 to October 7. Drink from 2028-2048.94-96 Pts.

This group of Vignobles K wines under JC Meyrou have been steadily building in quality and consistency over the past decade. Well measured but full extraction, with a vibrant but inky plum colour, clear energy, some tight tannins and a high level of black pepper and clove spice. Cassis and black chocolate, good freshness underneath, with rose bud character. 25% new barrels. 46hl/ha yield.

The 2023 Tour Saint Christophe is a super-sized, explosive Saint-Émilion. Fasten your seatbelt. It offers a rush of dense, inky fruit, chocolate, cloves, new leather and licorice. This huge, flamboyant Saint-Émilion packs quite a punch. Tasted three times, during which some samples have shown a slightly vegetal quality.

The 2023 Tour Saint Christophe has a perfumed, floral bouquet that shows fine delineation compared to some of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied, displaying crunchy red fruit mixed with white pepper and cedar. Quite linear toward the finish, this is a finely-tuned Saint-Émilion that should age well in bottle.

Light greenish yellow, silver reflections. Fresh pears, herbal savouriness, some honeydew melon, mineral touch. Medium complexity, white stone fruit, fresh acidity, lively, a multi-faceted food wine.

The quality of fruit and salty undertones from the limestone soil are really delicious and exciting. Medium to full body and very fine, velvety tannins that spread across the palate. Bright and crunchy at the end. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc.
