Tour Figeac - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2023

The Estate:

Château la Tour Figeac was founded in 1879, when it was separated from Château Figeac. Since Roman times, the famous "Graves de SaintÉmilion", the privileged piece of land on which Château La Tour Figeac is located, has been devoted to winegrowing. This terroir, along with Saint-Émilion's medieval heritage, was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. The Rettenmaier family since 1973 In 1994, Otto Maximilian Rettenmaier arrived at Château La Tour Figeac, which belonged to his family based in Heilbronn, Germany, to set up a new management team. Fascinated by the country and the enormous potential of the terroir, he decided to take charge of the estate himself, and membership of the select group of Saint-Émilion Grands Crus Classés confirms both the exceptional quality of the Tour Figeac terroir and that of its wines.

The 2023 Vintage:

Climatic conditions:

After a very dry winter, spring continued in the same vein, favoring a fine flowering season. As for summer, it got off to an early start with June 2023, the 2nd hottest June since 1900 (+2.6°C). But such dry, hot conditions, without a heatwave, are generally favourable for good grape development, and avoid
early onset of disease.

Harvesting: Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes are brought to perfect maturity
at harvest time.

The 2023 La Tour Figeac has an understated bouquet, but one that is quite well-defined and elegant, brambly red fruit with cedar and bay leaf. The palate is well-balanced with fine acidity, fresh and vibrant with a creamy, focused and quite delicious finish. This is the best La Tour Figeac in recent years and comes highly recommended.

Ripe, lightly baked plums and cherries with touches of savory dried herbs and spices on the nose. Medium-bodied with firm, lightly chewy tannins and a juicy, medium-long finish. Juicy. 65% merlot and 35% cabernet franc. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Red and black fruits, loamy earth, leather, and savory herb notes all emerge from the 2023 Château La Tour Figeac, a medium-bodied, nicely balanced, elegant Saint-Émilion that has soft tannins and outstanding length. The blend is 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc from more sandy, gravelly soils, and it's going to shine with just 2-3 years of bottle age. This cuvée is never the biggest or richest in a vintage, yet I love its complexity as well as its overall balance. Tasted multiple times with consistent notes.

La Tour Figeac (Saint Émilion; 65% Merlot; 35% Cabernet Franc; a final yield of 45.5 hl/ha; 14% alcohol; tasted at the UGCB press tasting at the Cité du Vin and then at the Association des Grands Crus Classés at Dassault). Distinct in the UGCB line-up with a brighter and lighter red berry note to the fruit, which is then joined by darker berries bringing with them a copious violet florality. In fact we have multiple shades of currant – white, red and black, too, with some of their leafiness too on the palate. Very pure in its fruit profile and very dynamic in the mouth. This is less dense than many, but its more complex and more vibrant and articulate. Lively and engaging, and I really like it. Something of a coup de coeur. As pleasing a vintage of this as I can recall.

Spring flowers, cherries, plums, licorice, and a hint of espresso get the wine going. Medium-bodied, soft, silky, fresh, and creamy, the red fruits with their spicy accents express a nice sense of purity on the mid-palate, that carries through to the finish, where you also find a refreshing salty, licorice nuance. The wine blends 65% Merlot, with 35% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2027-2042. 92-94 Pts.

Austere, dark blueberry and cassis fruits, edges of charred caramel and sweet fruit given balance and pep by grilled mandarin peel and oyster shell salinity. 35% new barrels of 225l and 400l for ageing, 5% amphora, 40hl/ha yield.

The 2023 La Tour Figeac is a gorgeous, super-complex wine. Dried herbs, incense, licorice, spice, crushed flowers and mocha lend notable aromatic complexity. Deep and virile, with tons of depth and fine balance, La Tour Figeac is shaping up very nicely. The blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc works so well. The introduction of 1% large-format oak and some stems really exalts the purity of the fruit. Superb. Tasted two tines.

The 2023 La Tour Figeac has a very perfumed, floral bouquet of ebullient red cherries, crushed strawberries, violets and candied orange peel. The palate is medium-bodied with plush tannins, displaying a mixture of red and black fruit and a dash of white pepper. Gently grippy with a composed finish, this is a very promising, complex Saint-Émilion Grand Cru that should drink early yet also age well in bottle.

Dark garnet, deep core, purple reflections, discreet brightening on the rim. Ripe black cherries, floral nuances of hibiscus, fresh plums. Medium body, blackberry confit, hints of cloves, round tannins, fine nougat in the finish, mineral aftertaste, remains persistent, certain ageing potential.

Crafted from vines rooted in the sandy, gravelly soils near Figeac and composed of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc, the 2023 La Tour Figeac reveals aromas of licorice, dark wild berries, spices, smoke and fresh flowers. Medium to full-bodied, suave and enrobing, it’s seamless with velvety tannins, a fleshy core of fruit and a long, ethereal finish. Readers who love sensuality will love it.

Very well made, with blackberry, blueberry and stone aromas that follow through to a medium-bodied, juicy palate. More precise than past vintages. 60% merlot and 40% cabernet franc.
