The Little Horse - Château Cheval Blanc - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2008

After a mild and moderately rainy winter, the beginning of the vegetative cycle is very watered, with 173mm of precipitation in May, that is two and a half times the usual value. These precipitations are accompanied by a great sweetness. From mid-June to the end of July, a period of relative drought sets in, with temperatures and precipitation in August close to normal values. Some precipitation recorded at the beginning of September, followed by an exceptional period of very cool and dry weather from mid-September to mid-October make it possible to return the harvest in excellent conditions. A low harvest, an exceptional back season and an impeccable sanitary condition allow the collection of grapes of a rare balance and a high aromatic precision. The grapes are very rich in sugar and anthocyanins. The very good quality for the Merlots, rich and complex, is exceptional for the Cabernet Francs. There is also a great homogeneity of the qualitative potential over the entire harvest. The synergy between the two grape varieties is evident.

The 2008 Le Petit Cheval (65% Cabernet Franc and the rest Merlot) is a light, but not a wimpy wine. It is more cedary and evolved, with spice box, tobacco leaf, licorice, and red and black fruits in a medium-bodied, classic style that should drink nicely for 10-12 years. Drink 2011-2023

I am surprised by the quality of the second wine this year, considering the difficulty of the vintage. Pierre Lurton, president of Cheval Blanc, sais that they have really tried to improve the quality of the second wine, and it shows. There is lots of blueberry and chocolate character - serious Merlot character. Full and round with slightly chew tannins. Give it two to four years to come around.

Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, jugendliche Reflexe, violetter Rand. In der Nase feinwürzig, zarte Röstaromen, nach Gewürznelken und Zimt, attraktives Bukett. Am Gaumen saftig, kraftvoll und rund, präsente Tannine, elegant, bleibt sehr gut haften, schokoladiger Nachhall, würziger Abgang, ausewogen und gastronomisch angelegt, sehr positive Überraschung.

The finest second wine yet made at Cheval Blanc, the 2008 Le Petit Cheval is a blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. Elegant, soft, and richly fruity, it offers up hints of wood spice, forest floor, flowers, and black fruits. With sweet tannin as well as good texture, it will be delicious young, yet evolve for 12-15 years.

Si quelques millésimes récents de Cheval Blanc nous avaient laissés sur notre faim, le 2008 signe le retour du cru au plus hait niveau. Une nouvelle équipe technique rajeunie est en place autour de Pierre Lurton avec la volonté affichée de remettre le cru dans la course à l'excellence. C'est chose faite avec le millésime 2008. Issu d'un minuscule rendement de 25hl/ha, le vin, composé à parts égales de merlot et de cabernet franc, retrouve tout son lustre, avec son grain unique et son soyeux fabuleux. Un vin d'une grande précision, minéral à souhait, aux tanins parfaitement fondus. Il évoque le 1998, la dernière grande réussite de la propriété. Le second vin, Petit Cheval, est également de très belle facture, avec beaucoup de rondeur. A suivre de près.

A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc – this has a very well defined nose with red cherry, pomegranate and a touch of redcurrant. Light but very fresh. The palate is very fresh, very well balanced, extremely elegant and so lovely to drink that you almost want it to skip the elevage. Fine tannins, beautiful second wine. Tasted April 2009.

Son hédonisme est rare ! Ce vin se comporte plus comme un autre vin que comme un second vin. A tel point que lorsque j'ai eu fini de le goûter je m'attendais à un Cheval Blanc dithyrambique. Certains consommateurs le préfèreront à son aîné pour le plaisir qu'il donnera plus vite. Tout le monde n'a pas la vie devant soi. Très aromatique, velouté, il présente un goût de fruit et de violette à peine réglissé tout en fondant au palais. Des arômes et tanins de grande distinction parachèvent la finale. C'est vraiment difficile de ne pas l'avaler !

Second wine. Dark crimson. Rich yet dry and vigorous on the nose. Very sweet start – round and flattering even if without massive tannins. Though they certainly lurk there under the fruit. Lots of spice. Just lacks a little follow through though there is certainly lots of pleasure here for the medium term. Drink 2014-21

Raspberries, flowers and milk chocolate. Medium-bodied, with a core of fine tannins and a mineral, berry aftertaste. Fine and pretty. Second wine of Cheval-Blanc.
