Du Tertre - Margaux 2020

Last vintage of the Albada Jelgersma family.

Located on one of the highest and most beautiful gravelly rises in the Margaux appellation, Château du Tertre has a very interesting history. It was created in the 18th century by an important Irish négociant, Pierre Mitchell, who had fallen in love with the Bordeaux region and its wines. The founder of the first glassworks in Bordeaux, this refined, innovative man realized one of his fondest dreams by establishing his own fine wine estate.

Other famous families followed in his footsteps: the de Brezets and Vallandés, as well as the Koenigswarters, rich bankers close to Emperor Napoleon III. The quality of the wine was such that it was included among the great growths of Margaux in the 1855 classification.

Éric Albada Jelgersma acquired the estate in 1997. Thanks to major investments and careful management, Château du Tertre now expresses its intrinsically elegant personality year after year. Since March 2021 the Helfrich family has taken over the property and will be writing a new page in the long history of château du Tertre. A change in the continuous search of excellence, a tradition in motion..

The 2020 Château du Tertre has a mellow nose that needs more vigor—it doesn't want to create too much fuss. The palate is medium-bodied with a mixture of black and blueberry fruit, crushed stone and a touch of seaweed and black pepper. The finish displays good weight and substance in contrast to the more discrete aromatics. Just a little warmth blurs the edges. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet berries, pencil shavings, warm spices and cocoa powder, the 2020 du Tertre is medium to full-bodied, supple and seamless, with an elegant, suave profile that belies good depth and concentration. This terroir is never going to produce the most powerful wine in Margaux, and it's the prime example of an estate that gets lost in a mass tasting, but the restructuring of its vineyards, almost complete, is clearly quietly bearing its fruit.

This throws a noticeable savory note out front, along with flashes of lilac and bay leaf in the mix, while the core of gently mulled red and black cherry fruit catches up. The silky finish has a light sanguine echo. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2025 through 2035. 6,000 cases made, 900 cases imported.

Cedar, spice, forest leaf and dark red fruits appear on the nose. From there you find sweet, ripe, chewy, red fruits that meld into an herb, olive and crisp, red berry finish. Drink from 2025-2045.

Precise ans serious showing notes of black prunes, blackberries, coriander, wet asphlat, burnt earth and mandarin peel. Full bodied, soft tannins and a finale of medium length. Drink now.

The 2020 Château du Tertre still has a slightly herbaceous nose that I remarked upon from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins, nicely balanced, but does not deliver the complexity that I know this Margaux can deliver. Just falls a bit below its potential in this vintage.

Pure and floral nose with violet, cassis, raspberry and some aromatic herbs. Ample palate with a rather rounded and supple texture, youthful but grainy tannin, some herbal flavours and good length.

The 2020 du Tertre is bold and punchy, with an enticing mix of inky dark fruit and more savory, earthy tones. All the elements are so nicely integrated. The tannins are a bit burly, as is often the case, and yet the 2020 appears to have enough fruit to provide at least some balance. Scorched earth, licorice, tobacco and game linger on the potent finish.

The 2020 Château Du Tertre is fresh and lively, with pretty red and blue fruits as well as lots of sappy herbal and floral nuances. It’s nicely balanced and concentrated on the palate, with ripe tannins, a solid spine of acidity, and beautiful overall balance. The Margaux appellation was one of the more challenging places in the Médoc in 2020, but this looks to be terrific.

The 2020 Château du Tertre has a slightly herbaceous nose, a trait that I have noticed on recent vintages; I find it a little jarring. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, but again, I perceive some herbaceousness in this vintage, plus some attenuation toward the gritty finish. I’m not quite sure where this will go once in bottle.

A more sculpted feel to 2020 here than at many estates in Margaux, with touches of tobacco leaf and white pepper accompanying the raspberry and wild strawberry fruits right from the first moments. There is a vivacity to the tannins, which remain muscular and a little sombre on the finish, once they have built up through the palate. Good stuff. Château du Tertre announced new owners as of January 2021, with the Helfrich family of Grands Chais de France taking over from previous owners Albada Jelgersma family on a leasing and management basis. 6% Petit Verdot completes the blend. A yield of 25hl/ha. 40% new oak.

Deepest purple crimson. Lots of black fruit with a very slight herbal note and a nice touch of stone dust. A little bit sinewy on the palate but elegant in its restraint, dry texture
and the tanning are layered and fine. Long finish. Embryonic but that’s hardly surprising for an unfinished wine. Long, fine-boned

Following the initial shot of espresso you find flowers, wet earth, forest floor and dark red fruits. Medium/full-bodied, fresh and juicy, with a spicy edge to the creamy soft, sweet fruits in the finish. 90-92

Displaying a deep purple-black color, the 2020 du Tertre springs from the glass with pronounced blackcurrant pastilles, black cherry preserves and blueberry pie scents, with an undercurrent of dried Mediterranean herbs, pencil shavings, tar and black olives. The medium-bodied palate offers compelling freshness with a soft, approachable texture and plenty of juicy black fruits, finishing with invigorating herbal notes.

Un nez variétal, très épicé, pas totalement en place. La bouche se montre plus enjôleuse mais manque de structure et de fond. Il y a ici, pour moi, quelques pyrazines. Dommage.

Dunkles Rubingranat, opaker Kern, violette Reflexe, breitere Randaufhellung. Feine Kräuterwürze, rote Kirschen, etwas Lakritze, tabakige Nuancen. Mittlerer Körper, rote Kirschen, frisch strukturiert, runde Tannine, mineralischer Nachhall, ein ele- ganter Speisenbegleiter mit Entwicklungspotenzial.

Blackberry, graphite and blueberry character. It’s full-bodied, layered and chewy with fine-grained tannins and a punchy finish.
