Du Tertre - Margaux 2016

Château du Tertre, a timeless elegance

Château du Tertre is located on one of the highest gravel ridges in the Médoc. Its history began in the 18th century with Pierre Mitchell, an Irish merchant who fell in love with the Bordeaux region and its wines. As the founder of Bordeaux's first glassworks, he fulfilled one of his dearest dreams by creating his own vineyard estate. Other famous families followed in his footsteps, including the Albada Jelgersma family, who purchased the estate in 1997 and made significant investments to allow this Grand Cru Classé of 1855 to express all of its elegance.

In March 2021, the Helfrich family took over to write a new chapter in the history of Château du Tertre. The family shares the same quest of excellence, which is a tradition in motion.

The 2016 du Tertre has a refined bouquet of black fruit infused with loamy, sous-bois scents, gradually evolving more intensity with aeration. The medium-bodied palate is well-defined, with lithe tannins, a fine bead of acidity and a detailed, quite precise finish. This just requires a couple more years in bottle. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting.

Rouge grenat moyen.

An outstanding Margaux with its classic perfume of sweet red fruits, dried flowers, balsam wood, and spice, the 2016 Château du Tertre is medium-bodied, elegant, and seamless on the palate. This is one of those wines that grows on you with time in the glass, and while it plays in the elegant, pretty end of the spectrum, it has wonderful fruit. It should keep nicely for 15 years or so.

Fresh damson plum, bitter cherry and savory notes are seamlessly layered together, with fresh tobacco and a flash of iron checking in on the pure, silky, persistent finish, where the slightly high-pitched fruit plays out nicely. Best from 2021 through 2032. 13,333 cases made.  –JM

Extremely deep and ripe on the nose with dried-berry, chocolate and plum aromas that follow through to a full body, round and soft tannins and a flavorful finish. A rich and soft-tannin structure to the wine. Try after 2024.

The 2016 du Tertre has a nose of fragrant fruit, more red than black, featuring raspberry and wild strawberry mixed with graphite and light cedar aromas. The harmonious, focused palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin and good mineralité. This might not have as much substance as its Margaux peers, but it feels very sustained in the mouth.

The 2016 du Tertre has really come together nicely. There is a sense of translucence in the 2016 that conveys finesse and refinement. Sage, mint, dried flowers and sweet herbs add layers of aromatic nuance as the sweet red cherry and plum fruit is push forward. I would prefer to drink this pleasant, easygoing Margaux over the next 10-15 years.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 du Tertre features cassis, red plums and spice box on the nose with herbs and earth nuances. The palate is medium-bodied, lean and soft with an earthy finish.

Powerful, intense and concentrated, those tannins are big in quantity and quality. This is a sombre, intellectual wine in the way that many 2016s are. It has a good texture of silky black fruits through the palate, suggesting this will age well, while a white pepper crescendo gives a spicy kick on the finish. 5% Petit Verdot completes the blend, with the wine aged in 50% new oak.

Purpurgranat.

The 2016 Du Tertre is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot picked from 27 September until 19 October. Estate manager Alexandre van Peek told me that this represents one of the highest levels of Cabernet Sauvignon in recent years. Matured in 35% new oak, it has a harmonious bouquet with pure blackberry, raspberry and mineral scents that are neat and well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, quite saline on the entry, understated at first, but gaining weight in the mouth and delivering a precise and minerally, classic Margaux finish. All it's missing is the persistence on the finish. It just seems to rush out the exit door before you've really gotten to know it. Hopefully it will develop that side during barrel maturation.

Flowers, cherries, smoke, thyme, cassis and silky fruits all over the place in this medium-bodied, fresh, sophisticated wine. From a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot Franc, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, the wine reached 13.2% alcohol with a pH of 3.7. The Merlot was harvested from September 27 until October 10, the Cabernet Sauvignon from October 15 to October 19 and the Cabernet Franc from October 10 to October 13. The Petit Verdot was harvested in one day, October 15.

The 2016 du Tertre is soft, pliant and quite expressive. Sweet red cherry, white pepper, herbs, iron and smoke give the wine its distinctive savory personality. The 2016 is medium in body, yet offers lovely depth and midpalate pliancy. Floral notes and bright acids add freshness on a finish supported by firm tannins and creamy, expansive fruit. The 2016 is a terrific du Tertre. Tasted two times.

(75 Cabernet Sauvignon, 10 Merlot, 10 Cabernet Franc, 5 Petit Verdot) | 45% new oak | 13% alc. Fairly generous on the nose and then a little too slim and hollow on the finish, this is a wine which promises and then fails to deliver. It is just a bit too weak and watery, and this is a shame because the fruit character seems to be correct. 16+

Dark with the usual sweet oak nose. Just a little dead on the palate. Round and very well worked tannins but just a little short of freshness.16.5+

Barrel Sample. Made by the same team as Giscours, this is a fine wine. Its rich structure combines with acidity and dense, plummy fruit to give a wine that charms now but is sure to age well.

Bright and engaging, with lots of bay, savory and tobacco notes out front, backed by lively plum, cherry and raspberry coulis flavors. The sleek, mineral-edged finish pulls the fruit and herb elements together. Distinctive.—J.M.

A dense and tight red with currants, blueberries and hints of walnuts. Changes from pure fruit and then back to wet earth. The purity in the cabernet, the linear tannins and the drive with acidity behind it makes it one of the best Tertres ever. Better than 2015?

A beautifully smooth, silky du Tertre in 2016, with an emphasis on subtle spicing, full of subtle but unmistakably exotic black chocolate, white pepper and cloves. Elegant and slightly restrained with generously silky tannins, a lovely wine.
