Talbot - Saint-Julien 2021

Château Talbot, a historic classified growth in Saint-Julien

4th Médoc Grand Cru Classé, Château Talbot comprises 110 hectares of a single vineyard in the heart of the Saint-Julien commune, an outstanding appellation as it counts no fewer than 11 classified growths.
Ideally situated on the banks of the Gironde estuary on hilltops of alluvial gravel carried by the Dordogne River from the Massif Central and from the Pyrenees by the Garonne, Château Talbot’s terroir is exceptional.

The wines, renowned for their constant quality, are supervised by Nancy Bignon-Cordier, with the valuable advice of enologist Eric Boissenot and consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt. They are consistently rich while remaining extremely elegant, their silky tannins make it possible to drink them young as well as after prolonged aging.

The 2021 Talbot is an absolutely gorgeous wine. Aromatic, layered and impeccably balanced, Talbot is simply exquisite in 2021. Sweet pipe tobacco, incense, dried flowers, mint, licorice and blue-toned fruits are some of the notes that grace this super-refined Saint-Julien. All the elements are so well balanced. The floral, effusive finish is so inviting.

The 2021 Talbot offers up aromas of black fruits, licorice and toasty oak, followed by a medium-bodied palate with a fleshy attack that segues into a concentrated but also somewhat firm, angular palate. It will require a bit of patience. 88+

Offers a solid core of crushed plum and black currant fruit, underscored by savory and tobacco accents and a light sanguine edge. Possesses just enough flesh to stave off the vintage's grainy side as a late iron note echoes. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2025 through 2035. 22,000 cases made, 1,900 cases imported.  –JM

Everything about this wine is on the edge. The fruit is classically Talbot-shaped, but there is just a tiny hint of sourness. Herbal elements and firm oak notes indeed challenge the senses but just about remain balanced. The finish is a little raw and raggedy, but it somehow holds itself together. While I don’t doubt that many of the constituent parts will even out, I think that there will always be a slight coarseness here that will not assimilate into the wine's core, which means it will not reach the true balance or silkiness that it is looking for. 17.5

A fruity and attractive 2021 with currant and berry aromas and flavors. Hints of citrus. Medium body. Fresh finish.

The 2021 Château Talbot is another solid Saint-Julien, an appellation that excelled in the vintage. Giving up lots of red and black fruits, leather, dried flowers, and some loamy earth notes, it's medium-bodied, has good mid-palate depth, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. It should be an outstanding wine.

71 % cabernet-sauvignon, 24 % merlot, 5 % petit verdot.

Medium-deep crimson. Roasted chestnut, black cherry, blackcurrant aromas with tobacco leaf notes. Bittersweet palate with blackcurrant, chinotto, slightly leafy notes, fine bitter/ al dente tannins and some savoury oak notes. Finishes chalky firm. Acidity pronounced at the finish. 71% cabernet sauvignon, 24% merlot, 5% petit verdot. 15 months in around 50–60% new French oak. 12% alc

Talbot presents some amazing roundness this year. The mild sweetness on the finish fabricates a chubby and plumpy mouthfeel, as if savoring a piece of tofu. It is very different from the crispy and lean style of the previous vintages. For a vintage not overwhelmingly aromatic, Talbot manages to integrate the secents of peony blossom, red mulberry, and black tea into its body, a presentation as clear and bright as the trickling stream. A classic representation of an elegant Saint-Julien 2021. Medium-bodied, soft, round, and easily drinkable in its youth, the wine is focused on its vibrant, earthy core of spicy, fresh, red and black currants along with green, leafy herbs. The wine is produced from blending 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. 12.8% ABV. Drink from 2024-2040. 89-91

The 2021 Talbot, the Saint-Julien stalwart now under the aegis of Jean-Michel Laporte for several years, was picked from September 27 to October 11 at 44hL/ha and matured in 60% new oak, the alcohol registering 12.8%. It has a clean, focused and correct bouquet, hints of blood orange and graphite surfacing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple entry. This feels cohesive and smooth, delivering moderate depth and a touch of licorice toward the finish. I would have just liked a little more on the aftertaste. (12.8% alcohol)

The 2021 Talbot is impeccable. Soft and inviting, the 2021 is absolutely charming. Red-fleshed fruit, blood orange, mint and spice are front and center. Although pretty easygoing in style, the 2021 is beautifully balanced and is not penalized by some of the rougher edges that have been an issue in the past. If the 2021 is an indication of where the estate is heading, that direction appears to be quite positive.

Rubinrot.

The 2021 Talbot is promising, exhibiting aromas of wild berries, cherries, cigar wrapper and sweet spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety palate that's bright and seamless, with an enveloping, charming profile despite analytically rather high levels of polyphenols. This is a fine effort that reminds Jean-Michel Laporte of the 2001 vintage in style—though the 2021 will benefit from all the improvements that the last two decades have witnessed at this address. Tasted four times. (91 - 92)+
