Soutard - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2014

The estate

Château Soutard is one of the oldest properties of Saint-Emilion. First mention of Soutard date back to 1513. The chateau has been transformed in the 18th century, is listed at the French historical monuments. Classified since 1952, Soutard is owned by AG2R LA MONDIALE insurance group since 2006.

Its 30ha large contiguous vineyard is one of the most representative frome the limestone plateau of Saint-Emilion. The vineyard is planted with merlot, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon and malbec. The team seeks to respect and highlight the expression of the terroir, the purity of the fruit, with measure and precision.

The 2014 Soutard has a ripe red cherry and crushed strawberry scented bouquet tinged with vanilla. The new oak feels quite conspicuous but not overbearing. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe red fruit, although here the oak grabs the steering wheel at the expense of terroir expression and personality. I expect more considering previous showings. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Nez fruits rouges, bouche tendre, souple, délicate, tanins fins, un peu marqué par la prise de bois.

Floral aromas, paired with fresh red berries and licorice on the nose, this elegant medium-bodied wine carries the red fruit theme all the way through to the finish. 88-90 Pts

The Château Soutard 2014 has a more odered bouquet than displayed in recent vintages: much more controlled and linear with blackberry, raspberry and cedar fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, fine acidity and plenty of freshness on the finish that has a long, minerally aftertaste. This is a more cerebral Soutard in the making–not powerful, but there is breeding here.

A simple wine that is compact and quite dense. Very little flavor expression with tannins that are a bit dry and astringent. Should be better with 3 to 4 years in the bottle.

A step up this year. More refinement in the texture and tannins. Sweet fruit. Chalky terroir shows on the finish. Still a way to go but shows progress. Drink: 2021-2032 (88)

Dark crimson. Complex, evolved nose. Easy, fresh, well balanced. Nothing excessive. Nicely done with good energy. Long and with a fair amount of acidity that is – just – not excessive. Dry and racy but not drying. A confident, lively, relatively light St-Émilion. Bit of a ballet dancer. Drink 2022-2030

A little tight but very fine and pretty with blueberry and currant character. Medium to full body. Excellent.

93–95. Barrel Sample. Firmly tannic and structured, this wine also has a fine swathe of ripe fruit character, and the balance is coming as these elements coalesce. Hints of chocolate add richness to the close and suggest a wine that is going to mature successfully.  — R.V.  (4/2/2015)
