Sociando-Mallet - Haut-Médoc 2020

Definitely one of the major brands in Bordeaux. The estate is sizeable (82 ha), and has been producing wines of great quality on its price range for over two centuries.

Since the 60’s, Jean Gautreau, one of the key figures of Bordeaux viticulture, has embodied the property. Mr Gautreau passed away in 2019. He was 92 years old, and his passion for this cru has never failed. We are convinced that the wines produced there will bear his signature for many years to come.

The vineyard is located on a beautiful terroir, made of gravel slopes and hillsides. From the top, looking out to the south, you can see some other hills of the same type: the best places in Saint-Estèphe, Le Boscq, Calon Ségur, Tronquoy Lalande, Meyney, Montrose.

The vineyard is now managed by Sylvie, his daughter, who took over management of Sociando some years ago.

The 2020 Sociando-Mallet shows more new oak on the nose than its peers, though there is sufficient brambly red fruit to soak that up. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and well-delineated with bitter cherry and a splash of balsamic. It's granular in texture with satisfying length and a side order of classicism. Give this a couple of years in bottle. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

CORRECTION NEEDED: Percentages The 2020 Sociando-Mallet is very attractive, exhibiting aromas of cassis and plums mingled with notions of pencil shavings, loamy soil, tobacco leaf and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with lively acids and powdery tannins, it's a strong effort from a site that always does well in warm vintages. The 2020 is a blend of 53% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Cabernet Franc.

Precise and juicy on the nose showing notes of fruits of the forest such as raspberries and currants blended with hints hot citron and grapefruit. Medium bodied, light tannins and a finale with good distension. Drink now.

The 2020 Sociando Mallet has retained its impressive aromatics from its showing in barrel with beautifully defined blackberry and raspberry fruit, pressed violet and light cedar aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with firm backbone, a little powdery in texture, fine backbone with ample freshness and tension towards its graphite-infused finish. Bravo!

This has a pretty nose with dark spices, nut shell and cedar notes with a dark fruit backbone, following through to a medium body with firm and finely polished tannins that go on and on. Refined and nicely balanced with velvety texture. Lingering and chalky finish. Try after 2026.

Sociando-Mallet. Y'en a un par là-haut qui doit être très fier ! 2027-2045

Dense and rich structure in a classic fashion with plentiful yet ripe tannins, fine toast and coffee notes, long and vigorous, excellent potential for long ageing.

Dark purple colour with violet hue and black core. Classical nose with wonderful ripe yet fresh fruit reminiscent of dark berries, plums and cherries. Subtle oak, hints of vanilla, dark chocolate and cedar wood, graphite and black pepper. On the palate a powerful wine tamed by fine acidity and elegant tannins, complemented by dark berries and juicy fruit, black pepper and elegant spiciness, a wine with convincing length.

The 2020 Sociando Mallet has a beautifully defined and focused bouquet of intense blackberry, briar and wilted iris petal aromas; hints of boysenberry jam linger offstage. The medium-bodied palate features fine-boned tannins and predominantly black fruit. Very saline and sappy, with a dash of pepper on the aftertaste. This is a typical Sociando Mallet, full of grace and power.

Attractive spicy nose, plenty of Médoc character with layers of tannins. There is punch and personality here, and within the vintage it definitely has plenty to offer. Not as much depth as in certain vintages for sure, but this has depth, needs time to soften in the glass. Well made and well balanced with good potential for ageing. Touches of violet on the finish although acidities are pretty high. A yield of 42hl/ha.

Deeply colored, with a nose offering flowers, touches of chocolate, wet earth, herbs and dark red spicy fruits. The wine is full-bodied, with a generous splash of black fruits, savory herbs and cocoa. Long and full in the mouth, this will age and develop for at least 3 decades with little effort. 92-94

Blackberries, blackcurrants and flowers on the nose and palate. Medium body, firm tannins and a long, fresh finish. Linear, refined tannins. Subtle now.
