Sarget de Gruaud Larose (BIO-ORGANIC) - Saint-Julien 2024

Gruaud Larose, the revival of a "Super Second"

Since its creation, in 1725, four families have succeeded one another at the head of Gruaud Larose: the Gruaud & Larose families, the Balguerie and Sarget families, the Cordier family and the Merlaut family. The 82-hectare vineyard, planted in 1784, is spread out around the château. This exceptionally homogeneous terroir has remained the same since 1855, when the estate was named 2nd Grand Cru Classé.

Since 2018, the property has taken a significant turn. That year, Virginie Sallette took over as technical director. In addition to questioning every detail of the production process to gain even more precision, she and her teams also reap the rewards of a complete replanting program of the vineyard initiated several years ago. The impressive qualitative progression of the wines reflects this pivot. This concerns also the second wine, Sarget de Gruaud Larose.

Sarget de Gruaud Larose

Sarget de Gruaud Larose has been produced since 1979. It benefits from the same care as the grand vin of Gruaud Larose. Since 2019, this wine has made a qualitative leap. Generous and charming, it gives a lot of pleasure!

The 2024 vintage

From mid-April: cooler-than-normal temperatures slowed the development of the vines. September: heavy rainfall slowed down the ripening of the grapes. Patience was the key to success, enabling the grapes to reach optimum ripeness and the harvest to begin on 27 September

Deep garnet-purple in color. Hops from the glass with vivacious notes of warm strawberries, black raspberries, and lavender, followed by suggestions of cinnamon stick and dusty soil. The light-bodied palate is refreshing and pure with red berry flavors and a soft texture paving the finish.

The second wine of the Château, the 2024 Château Gruaud Larose Sarget is 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, and the balance equal parts Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, with the élevage spanning 12 months with the majority in used barrels. It's a forward, charming effort with perfumed red and black cherries, leafy herbs, and a kiss of graphite on the nose. It's medium-bodied, has a soft, supple, layered mouthfeel, no hard edges, and a good finish.

The 2024 Sarget de Gruaud Larose spends 12 months in oak. It has a light but pleasant bouquet with blackberry and wild hedgerow scents. It's quite sedated—in a good way. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, dark berry fruit laced with cedar at its core and a peppery if slightly short finish. Drink this over the next five to seven years.

The 2024 Sarget de Gruaud Larose is a bold, juicy second wine that will drink well right out of the gate. Succulent red cherry/plum fruit and sweet spice notes are pushed forward. Soft contours wrap it all together while pretty floral accents lift the finish. This mid-weight Saint-Julien is a delight.

Currants, cranberries, and peppery herbs show easily in the perfume. On the palate, the wine is bright, sharp, and crisp, with chewy, piquant red fruits from start to finish. You should be able to enjoy this wine on release. The wine is a blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc,12.45% ABV. Drink from 2027-2033.

From the first sip, you can immediately feel the fullness and juiciness on the palate. Although the finish is a bit firm, the mid-palate’s fine texture is still quite convincing. With a pH of 3.55 and slightly elevated acidity, the wine’s palate is naturally extended, and its soft structure provides a refreshing and smooth experience. The aromas of sour cherries and wax apples are clear and direct – straightforward yet not monotonous – precisely reflecting the signature style of Sarget de Gruaud Larose.

A blend of 46% Merlot and 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the 2024 Sarget de Gruaud Larose is a medium-bodied, tangy red redolent of cassis and petals. Pretty, pure and a touch acid-driven, it checks in at just under 12.5% alcohol.

Dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Delicate strawberry, a hint of heart cherry, nuances of orange zest, inviting bouquet. Slender, delicate red berry, fresh and lively, a delicate, light-footed food companion.

48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot
