Gruaud Larose, the revival of a "Super Second"

Since its creation, in 1725, four families have succeeded one another at the head of Gruaud Larose: the Gruaud & Larose families, the Balguerie and Sarget families, the Cordier family and the Merlaut family. The 82-hectare vineyard, planted in 1784, is spread out around the château. This exceptionally homogeneous terroir has remained the same since 1855, when the estate was named 2nd Grand Cru Classé.

Since 2018, the property has taken a significant turn. That year, Virginie Sallette took over as technical director. In addition to questioning every detail of the production process to gain even more precision, she and her teams also reap the rewards of a complete replanting program of the vineyard initiated several years ago. The impressive qualitative progression of the wines reflects this pivot. This concerns also the second wine, Sarget de Gruaud Larose

Sarget de Gruaud Larose has been produced since 1979. It benefits from the same care as the grand vin of Gruaud Larose. Since 2019, this wine has made a qualitative leap. Generous and charming, it gives a lot of pleasure!

The 2023 Sarget de Gruaud Larose was bottled in May. This offers blackberry and mulberry scents allied with pressed flower and just a background of tangerine aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with gritty tannins on the entry. Tarry black fruit, cracked black pepper, good grip with a very peppery aftertaste. Give it a couple of years in bottle.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Sarget de Gruaud Larose skips out with vivacious notes of Morello cherries, juicy raspberries, and fresh plums leading to an undercurrent of violets, wood smoke, and fragrant soil. The light to medium-bodied palate is soft and refreshing, with a savory personality and soft-spoken finish. The blend is 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40.5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 3.5% Petit Verdot.

Leafy, fresh herbs, cedar, mint, tobacco, and red fruits show easily in the perfume. On the palate, the wine is bright, fresh, and fruity, with a core of red currants from start to finish. You should be able to enjoy this wine on release. The wine is a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40.5% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, and 3.% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2026-2033. 89-91 Pts.

The 2023 Sarget de Gruaud Larose is a pretty serious second wine. Succulent dark cherry, plum, licorice, spice and mocha are all front and center. The presence of the fruit here is alluring. Soft, plush contours wrap it all together in style. I very much like the depth here.

The 2023 Sarget de Gruaud Larose, matured in 15% new oak, displays a deep purple hue. The nose is quite "punchy" for a Deuxième Vin, with plenty of black cherries, iodine and light cedar scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a structured, slightly chewy entry, licorice-infused black fruit and firm grip; there is a bullishness about this Sarget, so afford it a couple of years before pulling the cork.

Dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Delicate nu- ances of sour cherry and liquorice, with dark wild berries in the background, a hint of herbal savouriness. Juicy, round and harmonious, delicate blackberry confit, miner- al-salty, subtle sweetness, already well developed.

Dark berries on the nose, lots of herbal tones, blackcurrant and clove spice. Really bright and vibrant, juicy and so succulent. Clean and crisp, lots of menthol freshness with clove and cedar. I love the graphite mineral undertone that lingers on the finish. Clean, lean, straight, but extremely well defined and finessed with crisp red fruits, strawberry, cranberry and just-ripe raspberry. Tangy, slick and straight but alive with personality. A great second wine, punchy and forthright. 3.5% Petit Verdot completes the blend.
