Saintayme - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2021

One of Denis Durantou’s estates.

Denis Durantou passed away in 2020 and was one of the greatest winemakers of the right bank. His daughters are proudly taking over the estate and honoring this heritage.

The Durantou family is also owner of Château l’Eglise Clinet in Pomerol.  The vineyard of 9 ha is hold in one block. Located in Saint-Etienne-de-Lisse, it is a beautiful terroir made of clayey-gravelly soil.
The Merlot profile is really reflected in the wines: nice fruitiness, the tannins are fleshy and silky at the same time.

The 2021 Saintayme has a tightly wound bouquet with blackberry, raspberry and light graphite aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a briny entry, quite tannic in style, and it has dispensed with the plushness I found out of barrel. It’s not bad, but th

The 2021 Saintayme is a very pretty, supple wine to drink now and over the next decade. It offers lovely freshness and verve to match its mid-weight personality. Crushed flowers, mint, dried herbs and red berry fruit are some of the notes that grace this vibrant, mid-weight Saint-Émilion. Saintayme can often show a slightly vegetal note, but that is not the case with the 2021, which is pretty remarkable for the year. This was aged 20-25% in tank.

Youthfully reserved, the 2021 Saintayme, a 100% Merlot, evokes aromas of dark berries and spices with some green notes. Moderately weighted and round on the palate, the wine is firm and tannic on the finish. The maturation process seems to have made the wine stricter and more tannic than during the en primeur tasting session.

There is a lovely sense of calm about Saintayme in 2021. The oak protects the wine and the slightly lover alcohol levels allow more tender fruit notes to emerge, showing wilder elements and more sensuality than expected. The perfume is superb and the tannins are bright, but not attacking, and while this will drink young, it has plenty of energy to last the course. 17

Coming from the talented team of Château L'Eglise Clinet, the 2021 Saintayme is all Merlot from more gravelly clay soils. It's medium-bodied, has beautiful red and blue fruits, some floral and chalky nuances, fine tannins, and a great finish. It should be outstanding.

Flowers and cherries with wet-earthy nuances are all over the place here. Medium-bodied, and fresh with bright, red berries and touches of spice on the mid-palate and in the finish. This will be ready-to-go on release. Made from 100% Merlot, 13.5% ABV. Drink from 2023-2035. 89-91

The 2021 Saintayme was picked from September 28 to October 11 and raised in 30% new oak. Kirsch and cranberry jus burst from the glass. The palate is not complex but well balanced, showing a touch of plushness toward the finish. Enjoy this after a couple of years in bottle.

Nez de cerise noire, de fruits frais ainsi qu'une pointe florale et boisée. Bouche droite, relativement tannique avec de la force et la sensation d'une maturité lente.

The Durantou family's 2021 Saintayme derives from soils rich in large stones in Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse. Offering up aromas of sweet blackberries, licorice and spices, it's medium-bodied, lively and charming, with a fleshy core of fruit and fine, powdery tannins.
