Saint-Pierre (Pomerol) - Pomerol 2018

Château Saint-Pierre in Pomerol, a beautiful gem to discover

The Pradel family, working in the wine industry since 1740, owns this 3 hectare jewel located in the heart of the village of Pomerol and its eponymous appellation. The vines of the domain are planted on terroirs of a rare quality: four parcels located near the very prestigious domains of Pomerol, Fleur-Pétrus, Clinet, Trotanoy, Le Pin and Vieux Château Certan.

The wines of Château Saint-Pierre are imbued with a distinctive personality, a deft blend of power and finesse which combines the strengths of different terroirs.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Saint-Pierre (Pomerol) rolls out of the glass with open-knit notions of prunes, blackberry preserves and Black Forest cake, plus touches of licorice, garrigue and unsmoked cigars. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock-full of ripe black fruits and earthy accents, framed by grainy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing on a mineral note.

Medium-bodied, with a nice touch of chocolate that accompanies all the sweet, fresh, luscious, silky plums on the nose and palate.

A big, rich, almost chewy wine, the 2018 Château Saint-Pierre (Pomerol) (95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc) offers lots of red and black currant and cherry fruits as well as roasted herbs, cedar, graphite, and mineral-like aromas and flavors. Full-bodied on the palate, it has lots of broad tannins, good concentration, and a solid finish. It brings plenty of fruit but certainly lacks the purity and precision found in the top 2018 Pomerol. Give bottles 4-6 years in the cellar and enjoy over the following decade. If the tannins resolve in a positive way, it should merit an outstanding rating in the future.

A rather tight, refined red with berry, chocolate and light walnut character. Rather smoky with toasted oak, too. Some seaweed. Medium body, fine tannins and a fresh finish. Drink in 2023.

The 2018 Saint-Pierre (Pomerol) is a dark, brooding wine. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, licorice, spice and tobacco, along with the wine's sheer density, convey an impression of virile power. The 2018 is not a shy wine by any means, but it has tons of character. The 2018 is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the first year in which there is Franc in the blend.

Floral, earthy, medium-bodied and on the red plum side of the style range, the wine is soft and mildly showy with a mineral infused, red berry, classic finish.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Saint-Pierre (Pomerol) features bold scents of baked blackberries, fruitcake and blueberry coulis with hints of raisin cake, garrigue and dusty soil. Full and rich, with a lovely plush texture, it has loads of spicy dried berries flavors and a peppery kick to the finish.
