Saint-Pierre - Saint-Julien 2021

The Triauds, a sincere and authentic family

In the world of wine, family is a much-flaunted value; many talk about it, yet few experience it quite like the Triauds. The story starts at the cusp of the Second World War, when Henri Martin, whose grandfather was a winemaker at Gruaud-Larose, acquired plots of vines from a number of classified growths in Saint-Julien, patiently building "his own" vineyard, Château Gloria. Then, in the mid 70s, the family business was boosted by the arrival of his son-in-law, Jean-Louis Triaud. This arrival marked the beginning of a 40-year carreer for this charismatic man with a wonderful sense of humor. In 1982, by a strange quirk of fate, the opportunity arose to purchase 1855 4th classified growth, Château Saint-Pierre, from which Henri Martin has once bought vines to establish Gloria.

Henri Martin and Jean-Louis Triaud worked hard, side by side, to develop both family estates. Saint-Pierre, the linear, elegant, archetypal Medoc features among "the greatest value wines in the whole of Bordeaux".

Today, Jean Triaud, along with his wife, Caroline, and his brother-in-law, Orphée Amougou, is the third generation at the helm of the family estates. And the 4th is already on board. Thus, this family knows how to work collaboratively to continue to pass on this magnificent family legacy.

The 2021 vintage, patience and determination

The 2021 will not be forget by the Triauds and the teams, as much for the difficult way in which it played out, as the conclusion and resulting quality, which is really quite good. More than anything, it was the first year on the path to organic conversion, which the team have accomplished in spite of it all. It is a great sign for the future.

The 2021 Saint-Pierre is a dark, brooding wine. Black fruit, gravel, spice, menthol, licorice and lavender add to an impression of somber intensity. There's good depth and drive, even if some angular contours remain. As always, Saint-Pierre shows the more brooding side of Saint-Julien. It's all there in 2021.

The 2021 Saint-Pierre offers up an exotic bouquet of sweet cassis, plums, spices and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, it's unusually rich and opulent for the vintage, with a broad attack, polished tannins and a creamy, oak-inflected finish. This classy Saint-Julien will offer a broad drinking window.

A layered, refined St.-Julien that shows depth and polish. Cassis, pencil lead, mineral, cigar box and dark chili chocolate. The juicy, polished, fine-grained tannins grow on the medium-bodied palate. Very long, classy and resolved in the finish. Already an overachiever for the vintage. Better than from the barrel. Already a joy to drink, but will hold very well over the next 10 years.

Fresh and sleek for the vintage, with focused red and black currant coulis notes dotted with potpourri and savory elements. The finish lets in a cast iron edge. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2031. 5,416 cases made.  –JM

Good depth of flavour through the opening and mid palate, acidity a litle high on the finish but well balanced by damson, black cherry and raspberry fruits, and given lift by plenty of cloves and turmeric spice. Will benefit from a few more years in bottle, but one of the real pleasures of 2021 is that even classified estates can be approached earlier than ususual. 34hl/h yield, first year organic conversion, Jean-Michel Comme consultant, Jean Triaud director. Tasted twice.

This is a powerful, tough wine with little grace or refinement, but it certainly packs a punch and doesn’t hold back in terms of fruit intensity or oak flavours. There is a spicy edge to the cassis theme and a rather tight, firm finish, so it will perform when it is called upon but falls a little short in terms of polish and detail. 17.5

I loved the 2021 Château Saint-Pierre, a medium-bodied, fresh, focused, yet still concentrated and textured Saint-Julien. Based on a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot representing a selection of 70% of the total production, it offers plenty of red and black fruits, notes of tobacco and crushed stone, terrific purity of fruit, and just a beautiful sense of elegance and finesse. The balance is spot on, and it's going to offer pleasure right out of the gate yet should also evolve gracefully.

Texture somptueuse, plus crémeuse dans son immédiateté actuelle que celle de quelques pairs, tannin bien enrobant, remarquable profondeur et persistance, exemplaire de son appellation.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2021 Saint Pierre leaps with vibrant black raspberries and Morello cherries notes, followed by a serious core of cassis, graphite and wild sage. Medium-bodied, the palate is suitably expressive with a chewy texture and well-sustained mid-palate fruit, finishing savory.

Medium-deep crimson. Dark chocolate, espresso, black olive aromas with toasty notes. Velvety textured wine with plentiful blackcurrant, chocolate flavours, brambly textures and underlying toasty vanilla notes. Finishes al dente firm with some leafy notes. 70% cabernet sauvignon, 14% merlot, 9% cabernet franc, 7% petit verdot. 14 months in roughly 50% new French oak. 13.3% alc

Saint-Pierre 2021 experimented with 5% stem fermentation (Cabernet Franc) for the first time and increased the percentage of Cabernet Franc to 25%. In addition to the classic berry aromas, this wine has a distinctive freshness of the tea stems, blood orange, and lilac flowers. On top of elegance, I could find crisp acidity, refined tannins, and a concentrated finish on the palate. This fully illustrates how the clay and gravel highlands of Pomerol has coped with the rainy 2021. 2021???Saint-Pierre?????5%?????(???),?????????????25%? ?????????,???????????????????????????,?????????????????????????????,???????????????????????2021???

Espresso, smoke, black cherry, currants, spice, flowers and chocolate on the nose, as well as in the plush, round, fruit-filled palate. There is a nice touch of minty espresso in the finish that comes in on the backend. The wine blends 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot. Drink from 2023-2045. 91-93

The 2021 Saint-Pierre (Saint-Julien) is tighter and more controlled on the nose compared to the Gloria, which was picked one day later. It feels nicely focused, with a little more mineral tension. The palate is medium-bodied and a bit coarser than the Gloria. Quite dense, with fine grip, driven along by the Cabernet Sauvignon, and fine tannins. Over three samples, it just narrows a little toward the finish, which is missing a bit of heft. Nevertheless, a commendable and classic Saint-Pierre.

The 2021 Saint-Pierre is very nicely done. It shows all of its typical signatures - dark fruit, brooding intensity and muscle - but with the intensity dialed down a bit, which I must say, is not a bad thing at all. Plum, lavender, crushed rocks, menthol and licorice are nicely pushed forward. With a bit less tannic clout than most vintages, I suspect the 2021 will also drink well with minimal cellaring. Tasted two times.

The 2021 Saint-Pierre is very pretty, offering up aromas of plums, wild berries, sweet spice box, cigar wrapper and nicely integrated new oak. Medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, it's a charming, fleshy wine with lively acids and fine length on the finish. It's a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and fully 7% Petit Verdot—the latter having, in fact, been co-planted among Cabernet in some of the estate's older vine holdings, but only formally identified as such now.

Ripe heady blackcurrants on the nose but fresh and cooling aromas too. Chewy and sappy on the palate but in the best way, mouthfilling, plump and so juicy giving this energy and spark. The strawberry and red berry fruit has a touch of dark chocolate and hedgerow but also cooling mint, cola and blueberry tones. Nicely worked. Maybe still a little closed and youthful, more pent up energy than overtly shouting right now. Good potential. Tasted twice.
