Rol Valentin - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2019

Rol Valentin, a family classified growth

The first takeoff of Château Rol Valentin took place in 1994 when it was acquired by Eric Prissette, a professional soccer player. Then, a new era began in 2009 when Alexandra and Nicolas Robin purchased the estate. This dynamic couple has worked with passion and commitment to improve the quality of the wines. In 2022, their efforts were rewarded: Rol Valentin joined the prestigious circle of Grand Crus Classés of Saint-Emilion.

The vineyard of Rol Valentin, covering an area of 7 hectares, lies mainly on a limestone plateau (5.65 hectares) and an argilo-limestone slope between Château Valandraud (1st Grand Cru Classé) and Château Fleur Cardinale (Grand Cru Classé).

The wine is vinified in small wooden barrels, which allows for very precise plot selection. With the help of Stéphane Derenoncourt, Rol Valentin strives to produce a wine that is representative of its terroir: finesse, harmony, and power are the elements that best characterize the identity of the estate.

This is a high-grade Saint-Emilion Grand Cru with natural balance and rich contents. The texture of limestone is pretty outstanding; it can be seen that the winemaker has a sophisticated understanding of his terroir. As a vintage with many tannins, this wine offers a good freshness and soft texture from head to toe; no matter how long it stays on the palate, I won't feel any pressure. 5% Malbec plays a brilliant role in the blend. ??????????????????????,??????????,?????????????????????????????,????????????????????????,?????????,???????????????5%Malbec???Merlot?????

This has aromas of blackberries, toasted bark, pine cones and spice box. It’s medium-bodied with firm, tight tannins. Some citrus peel on the structured and chewy finish. Better after 2024.

This estate continues to make outstanding wines, and their 2019 Château Rol Valentin sports a deep ruby/plum color to go with beautiful notes of red plums, darker cherries, Asian spices, graphite, and dried herbs. Medium-bodied on the palate, it's beautifully balanced, has good mid-palate density, ripe tannins, and a great finish. Beautifully done, it should have 15+ years of prime drinking.

From holdings situated on iron-rich clay soils next to Valandraud and supplemented by Malbec from a parcel near Figeac, the 2019 Rol Valentin offers up generous aromas of cassis, berry preserves, loamy soil, spices and espresso roast. Medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with powdery tannins that assert themselves on the finish, it's a lively, youthfully firm wine in a more muscular, extracted style. 90+

The 2019 Rol Valentin has turned out beautifully. Rich, ample and creamy, the 2019 is utterly beguiling from the first taste. Crushed raspberry, mint, spice, blood orange and mocha all build in the glass as this creamy, succulent Saint-Émilion shows off its curves and overall allure. The 2019 is even more impressive from bottle than it was from barrel.

The 2019 Rol Valentin showed extremely well from barrel. In bottle, it has retained a gorgeous, pure bouquet of blackberry, spicebox, violet and incense aromas, intense but not overpowering, and the oak neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, yet there is backbone and grip. Focused and velvety-smooth, this is an utterly delicious Rol Valentin, one of the finest I have tasted in recent years.

The wine from this small property on the plateau of Saint-Emilion has structure, fine tannins and ripe black fruits. It has juiciness allied to weight. This combination demands some time. Drink from 2026.

Very deep purple-black colored, the 2019 Rol Valentin has a decadently alluring nose of stewed plums, spiced blackberries and warm blueberries plus touches of Chinese five spice, fruitcake and potpourri. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, the decadence is well-countered by bags of freshness. The generous fruit is nicely supported by plush tannins, and it finishes long and spicy.

The 2019 Rol Valentin is a gorgeous, sensual wine. Racy and vibrant in the glass, the 2019 possesses terrific intensity from start to finish. Bright red raspberry fruit, blood orange, mint, rose petal and sweet spice all meld together in this lush yet effortless Saint-Émilion. Old vines in a cool, late ripening sector of Saint-Émilion yield a wine of tremendous character.

The 2019 Rol Valentin has a very seductive bouquet with pure black cherries, boysenberry and sous-bois aromas. The palate is very well balanced with finely chiseled tannins, fresh from start to finish with impressive tension on the finish. Now, this is a great Rol Valentin - chapeau!

Always a rich wine, this has clear shoulders and muscles in 2019, with spiced saffron and black cherry notes that creep over towards ripe figs. There is a lift on the finish, and juice, and this just about stays in balance, but it is knitted down tightly. Stéphane Derenoncourt consults.
