Robert Weil, Monte Nostrum Trocken - Rheingau 2023
Favored by nature, the “Kiedricher Berg” (the hill of Kiedrich) is a unique origin for wine. From its highest and coolest parcels, which are in between the classified Crus Turmberg and Gräfenberg as well as the forest and along the crest for almost one kilometer, we select the grapes for the MONTE NOSTRUM®.
Located at the western end of the crest, on top of a steep crag, the central tower of the former fortress castellum nostrum is rising up high. The archbishops of Mainz had the fortress built on top of the hill in 1160. The Rheingau sovereigns hoped to secure the precious vineyard sites – Turmberg and Gräfenberg – which have been mentioned in title deeds since the 12th century.
The exclusive, legally protected trademark MONTE NOSTRUM® is referring to these highest parcels of Weingut Robert Weil in the “Kiedricher Berg“ [Hill of Kiedrich]. Its front label was designed 1875, when the estate was founded.
The terroir of these steep vineyards is marked by barren stony soils of phyllite-slate, great exposure to the sun as well as perfect circulation of air. The forest, as the frontier of the vineyards, ensures the important difference between day and night temperatures, in order to guarantee the lively acid of Riesling and serves as an important water reservoir for the vineyard at the same time. Geological and microclimatic conditions of these – in best sense of the words “cool climate” – vineyards allow to produce Riesling wines of high minerality, finesse and at the same time complexity and sustainability.
In times of global warming, MONTE NOSTRUM® with its special quality of wine, is among the absolute pinnacle of Weingut Robert Weil.
Tasting notes:
Totally crystalline and precise, opens clear, on the slightly flinty, very precise and coolish nose. Silky, juicy and with fine acidity, yet pure and savory dry Riesling with a long, saline and stimulating finish.
