Rauzan Ségla - Margaux 2017

Rauzan-Ségla, an epitome of classicism.

The year 1661 marked the inception of Rauzan-Ségla, when Pierre de Rauzan acquired the esteemed Gassies estate, laying the foundation for its storied legacy. With a keen vision, he went on to acquire the vineyard parcels that now constitute the heart of Rauzan-Ségla's vineyards. In 1994, when CHANEL acquired this Second Classified Growth, and later Château Canon, a Premier Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Emilion in 1996, it ushered in a new era for the château. In 2017, CHANEL expanded its portfolio further by adding Château Berliquet, a Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé.

Rauzan-Ségla's sprawling 70-hectare vineyards are home to all four Bordeaux grape varieties. They embrace the diverse geologies and soils found within the Margaux appellation, proudly showcasing this rich diversity. The layout of the Rauzan-Ségla vineyards resembles a captivating puzzle or mosaic, a seemingly fragmented landscape that paradoxically imparts its unique strength. Rauzan-Ségla wines derive their complexity from this intricate mosaic of soils and grape varieties. Crafting each vintage requires a delicate dance of adaptation, transformation, and composition, resulting in a wine that is distinctly specific to the year and terroir.

It's worth noting that the estate commenced its conversion to organic farming in 2021.

A little less concentrated than the vintages on either side, with sculpted black fruits and floral character, red pepper spice, black truffles, grilled damson and smoked earth. Enjoyable, well balanced. Plenty of estate signature, but no need to wait as long as the more exuberant years. 40hl/h yield, 60% new oak, harvest September 12 to October 2. Scheduled to be bottled at the end of May, the 2017 Rauzan-Ségla offers a pretty, elegant style as well as lively notes of ripe cherries, black raspberries, cassis, and some spicy oak. It’s medium to full-bodied, has a wonderful sweetness of fruit, fine tannins, and is loaded with charm. It’s going to drink nicely right out of the gate yet, like all the wines here, it will keep for 2-3 decades. Maturity 2021-2051

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Rauzan-Ségla leaps from the glass with fragrant exotic spices and dried herbs over a core of blackberries, warm cassis and redcurrant jelly with hints of lavender and crushed stones. Medium-bodied, fine, fresh and elegant, it has soft, fine-grained tannins and wonderful freshness, finishing with an herbal lift. The blend this year is 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, harvested between September 12th and October 2nd at an average yield of 40 hectoliters per hectare. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Rauzan-Ségla rocks up with vibrant notions of cherry pie, warm cassis, blackberry preserves and red roses with hints of cinnamon stick and cloves. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is completely filled with wonderfully pure red and black fruits, framed by firm, very ripe, fine-grained tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy. Yum! The blend is 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. Drinking Window : 2024 - 2050. 96+

The 2017 Rauzan-Ségla is coming together very nicely. Soft and silky, the 2017 is a wine of pure and total finesse. Sweet red cherry and plum fruit, tobacco, cedar and licorice add pretty top notes, but more than anything else, the 2017 impresses with its statuesque elegance and total balance; nothing in particular stands out. For that reason, Rauzan-Ségla is the sort of wine that is easy to overlook, and yet all the elements of a top notch Left-Bank wine are present. Tasted three times.

Inviting, with seductive damson plum, red currant, blackberry and black cherry puree flavors layered together, stitched with dried anise, sandalwood and black tea threads. Very fine acidity flows underneath, carrying this through a suave and lengthy finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2022 through 2035. — JM

There’s a very balanced feel to this wine with ripe blueberries and red plums, as well as dried flowers. The palate has a supple, smooth build of rich, blueberry and cassis flavor and a long, fine-tannin finish. A blend of 62% cabernet sauvignon, 36% merlot and 2% petit verdot. Drink or hold.

The elegantly styled 2017 Château Rauzan-Ségla is another charming, incredibly well-balanced Margaux that offers up a great perfume of raspberries, violets, incense and spice. It has moderate tannin, a silky, lightly textured profile, and a great finish. A blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot still aging in 60% new French oak, this is one of the 2017s that grows on you with time in the glass and should evolve beautifully after release. Tasted twice.

Très beau nez floral, fruité, mûr et crémeux, de dimension racée et aristocratique, qui précède une bouche de très belle pulpe, pleine, sans fausse note ni pointe faible, avec une fraîcheur idéale, c’est un exemple pour le millésime.

The 2017 Rauzan-Ségla is a fleshy, seductive wine. Soft contours and ripe silky tannins add to the wine's immediacy and sheer appeal. The viticultural and winemaking team has succeeded in adding finesse and detail to the Grand Vin without altering its classic sense of structure and proportion. A vertical explosion of fruit laced with expressive floral notes build into the finish in a classy, understated Margaux that hits all the right notes. Hints of tobacco, crushed flowers, leather, licorice and dried cherry add the closing shades of nuance. What a gorgeous wine this is. Tasted three times.

Deep in color, this wine is violets, licorice, coffee bean, thyme and ripe red fruits which take no effort to find. The wine is luxurious, concentrated and bright with a texture that feels like the deep fruits were polished with velvet. On the palate, there is a sweetness and juicy quality to the fruit combined with energy and a kiss of oak. Give this a decade or just a bit longer and this beauty will really shine. The wine was produced from blending 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, reaching 13.0% alcohol with a pH of 3.68. The harvest took place September 12 to September 28. The Grand Vin was made from 55% of the harvest.

The 2017 Rauzan-Ségla is matured in 50% new oak with 14% vin de presse, which was apparently from the high quality Cabernet this year. It has a fascinating bouquet with pure blackberry, iris, crushed stone and a light estuarine influence that becomes stronger with aeration, just a faint touch of oyster shell developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, crisp acidity, very elegant and refined, possibly the most feminine Rauzan-Ségla in recent years with a silky smooth finish. It is not the instant showstopper like the 2015 – this is more understated and needs time for its quality to be fully appreciated. Tasted on three occasions.

Medium to full-bodied with a great core of sustained, energetic black fruit, a frame of fine-grained tannins and a lively backbone, it finishes with great length.

Rich, tight and deep, this wine has been extremely well handled in a vintage that suits this elegant style. There isn't the depth and complexity of expression that was seen in the previous two vintages, but it gets across the signature of the estate in an earlier drinking form - the absolute essence of what you want in a trickier vintage. If priced well, it's a buy.

This wine has a densely tannic structure and ripe berry fruits that are just beginning to shine. Acidity, spice and richness suggest this has good aging potential. It should be held until 2024.

Fresh, showing damson plum and bitter cherry fruit laced with a savory streak and boasting a bright iron note, this has a mouthwatering edge thanks to the acidity, which creates a very refined structure for this elegant red.—J.M.
