Rauzan Ségla - Margaux 2008

Rauzan-Ségla, an epitome of classicism.

The year 1661 marked the inception of Rauzan-Ségla, when Pierre de Rauzan acquired the esteemed Gassies estate, laying the foundation for its storied legacy. With a keen vision, he went on to acquire the vineyard parcels that now constitute the heart of Rauzan-Ségla's vineyards. In 1994, when CHANEL acquired this Second Classified Growth, and later Château Canon, a Premier Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Emilion in 1996, it ushered in a new era for the château. In 2017, CHANEL expanded its portfolio further by adding Château Berliquet, a Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé.

Rauzan-Ségla's sprawling 70-hectare vineyards are home to all four Bordeaux grape varieties. They embrace the diverse geologies and soils found within the Margaux appellation, proudly showcasing this rich diversity. The layout of the Rauzan-Ségla vineyards resembles a captivating puzzle or mosaic, a seemingly fragmented landscape that paradoxically imparts its unique strength. Rauzan-Ségla wines derive their complexity from this intricate mosaic of soils and grape varieties. Crafting each vintage requires a delicate dance of adaptation, transformation, and composition, resulting in a wine that is distinctly specific to the year and terroir.

It's worth noting that the estate commenced its conversion to organic farming in 2021.

Deep garnet in color, the 2008 Rauzan-Ségla has a rather rustic nose of sweaty leather, tobacco and dried herbs over a core of dried mulberries, prunes and underbrush. Medium-bodied, the mid-palate has just enough earthy/savory flavors with chewy tannins and a drying finish. The blend this year is 62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Merlot, harvested between October 2nd and 21st, at an average yield of 47 hectoliters per hectare. It was aged for 18 months in French oak, 60% new. The alcohol is 13.5%. Drink 2020-2030.

The 2008 Rauzan-Ségla is a solid vintage and is still relatively youthful, yet it’s certainly drinking nicely. A blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Merlot, it has a cooler, black-fruited, menthol, and tobacco-driven bouquet as well as medium to full body, still present tannins, considerable elegance, and outstanding length. Overall it’s a pretty, well-balanced 2008 that’s going to continue evolving for another 15-20 years. Maturity 2019-2039.

Here is 2008 with a velvety texture yet the underlying bright acidity comes through at the same time. Medium to full body, firm and chewy tannins and a fresh finish. Very pretty and energetic. Just opening now.

The 2008 Rauzan-Segla (62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Merlot) was made from 45% of the production. It is a beautiful wine in this vintage, not nearly as powerful and structured as the 2010, but it has complex notes of sweet red and black fruits, unsmoked cigar tobacco, spice box and a hint of very subtle wood. The complex perfume is followed by a dark ruby/plum-colored wine with beautifully sweet tannins, a silky, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and a long finish. This outstanding Margaux should drink nicely for 15-20 years. Drink 2011-2031. 90+ points

Floral and very fruity on the nose with plums and berries. Full bodied and very silky, with fine tannins. Chocolate flavors are balanced by a lovely citrus and berry fruit structure. A firm wine, needs another three to five years of age.

A touch soft, but persistent, with pretty floral, mulled plum and tobacco notes that glide over light, rounded tanins. The pure finish lets the fruit hand elegantly. Wins on balance rather than depth. Drink now through 2014.-J.M

Belle couleur rouge sombre de bonne intensité. Nez frais, fruité, discret et florial. Note de murier platane. Doux à l'attaque et présent à la fois, le vin se développe aromatique avec du goût, du corps et une tendreté mêlée de puissance. Finale savoureuse et de bonne longueur.

Dunkles Rubingranat, jugendlich Reflexe, zarter Wasserrand.

Full, deep ruby. Black fruits, licorice, leather and game on the nose, with a hint of green bell pepper in the background. Sweet, dense and nicely focused, showing a sappy quality to its blackcurrant, menthol and mineral flavors. Finishes broad and vibrant but with slightly dry tannins. This will no doubt require six or seven years of cellaring, and is built to age.

Mittleres Rubin, feiner Rand. 2017 – 2033

This outstanding effort is atypically forward, sexy, and opulent. Only 45% of the crop made it into this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Yields were 47 hectoliters per hectare, which is slightly higher than some estates, but the harvest was very late, between October 2-21. Sweet cassis, black cherry, licorice, tobacco leaf, and spice box are all present in the complex aromatics. In the mouth, the wine offers generosity, roundness, sweetness, and velvety, ripe tannins. I was surprised by how forward, precocious, and delicious this wine has already become. It appears set for a relatively long life of 25+ years.

Lightly fragrant. Not especially intense but well balanced though pretty forward. Sudden finish. Easy wine for relatively early consumption. Neat, long finish. It’s all on the end with this wine. Great complex finish. Drink 2012-18

Compared to Rauzan-Gassies, the Rauzan Segla has more fruit concentration on the nose: blackberry, tar, a touch of pomegranate and spice. Good definition. The palate is medium-bodied, harmonious, just lacking the structure and length that I was expecting. Given time in the glass though it begins to unfold, revealing more depth than first supposed with a very elegant finish of blackberry, cedar and graphite. This should give much more after bottling. Tasted April 2009.

Purple-red, fragrance and complexity on the nose, less blackcurrants, more wild roses and violets, almost understated fruit on the palate, but florality continues and there is true precision, depth and length. Drink 2015-25.

Offers flowers, currant, berries and sandalwood on the nose. Full-bodied, with firm tannins and lots of fruit and freshness. Firm and racy. There's a little more Cabernet this year and no Petit Verdot.
