Rauzan Ségla - Margaux 2006

Rauzan-Ségla, an epitome of classicism.

The year 1661 marked the inception of Rauzan-Ségla, when Pierre de Rauzan acquired the esteemed Gassies estate, laying the foundation for its storied legacy. With a keen vision, he went on to acquire the vineyard parcels that now constitute the heart of Rauzan-Ségla's vineyards. In 1994, when CHANEL acquired this Second Classified Growth, and later Château Canon, a Premier Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Emilion in 1996, it ushered in a new era for the château. In 2017, CHANEL expanded its portfolio further by adding Château Berliquet, a Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé.

Rauzan-Ségla's sprawling 70-hectare vineyards are home to all four Bordeaux grape varieties. They embrace the diverse geologies and soils found within the Margaux appellation, proudly showcasing this rich diversity. The layout of the Rauzan-Ségla vineyards resembles a captivating puzzle or mosaic, a seemingly fragmented landscape that paradoxically imparts its unique strength. Rauzan-Ségla wines derive their complexity from this intricate mosaic of soils and grape varieties. Crafting each vintage requires a delicate dance of adaptation, transformation, and composition, resulting in a wine that is distinctly specific to the year and terroir.

It's worth noting that the estate commenced its conversion to organic farming in 2021.

Deep garnet in color with a touch of brick, the 2006 Rauzan-Ségla gives up dusty earth, sandalwood, cigar and Indian spices scents with a core of mincemeat pie, prunes and dried mulberries plus a waft of dried roses. Medium-bodied, firm and chewy, it has bags of freshness supporting the muscular core of evolved, spicy fruit, finishing minerally. The blend this year is 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, harvested between September 21st and October 7th, at an average yield of 52 hectoliters per hectare. It was aged for 18 months in French oak, 50% new. The alcohol is 13%. Drink 2020-2029.

The 2006 Rauzan-Ségla is a classic wine from the vintage, with a medium-bodied, relatively firm, savory style that’s drinking at point today. Assorted darker fruits, graphite, dried herbs, and earth all define the bouquet and it’s straight, focused, and enjoyable. Drink it over the coming decade. Maturity 2019-2029.

Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Château Rauzan-Ségla has a sous-bois and sandalwood-scented bouquet with a light "mahogany bureau" scent developing soon after. The nose is open and inviting. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and bestowed with greater fruit concentration than the nose suggests: blackberry, raspberry mixed with sage, cedar and a touch of sea salt. As usual, this Rauzan-Séglas has a surfeit of personality and while it might not be a contender for the longest-lived Margaux, it is the kind of Left Bank 2006 that you welcome at the dinner table. Tasted January 2016.

Looks quite evolved. A bit raw and racy on the nose. Pretty marked tannins. There is certainly energy here. Drink 2015-2025

Raspberry, violet and blueberry on the nose. Full-bodied, with soft, refined tannins and a long finish. Such finesse and precision. Best from 2014 through 2020.

On the same qualitative level as this estate’s brilliant 2005, but with slightly less sucrosite, this blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot, exhibits a 1986-like personality ,a very successful vintage at Rauzan Segla. Its deep ruby/purple hue is accompanied by sweet aromas of bay leaf, black currants, licorice, truffles, and a touch of toast, dazzling fruit, and plenty of ripe, but not astringent tannin. This is a medium to full-bodied, classic, pure, surprisingly approachable Rauzan Segla that will be at its finest between 2012-2025+.

Good full red. Dusty redcurrant, musky mocha and cedar on the nose, complicated by game and flowers. Rich, ripe and lush, but nicely framed by sound acidity. Broad and classically dry on the back end, with lovely subtle ripeness of fruit.

A strong effort from this property situated across the street from Chateau Palmer, Rauzan-Segla’s harvest occurred between September 21 and October 7. Fifty-five percent of the production made it into the final blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot. A soft, classic style as well as ripe tannin suggest both the 1996 and 1986 vintages. The deep ruby/purple-tinged 2006 exhibits sweet, floral, black cherry, raspberry, and currant notes along with a subtle touch of menthol. Medium-bodied, elegant, pure, and surprisingly charming and approachable, it will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age, and should keep for 20-25 years.

Dunkles Rubingranat, jugendliche Reflexe, zarter Wasserrand. Burgundische Textur, was durchaus zum Margaux-Kanon passt.

Incrachable! Très belle construction.

Tasted at the UGC. As usual, Rauzan-Ségla offers quintessential Margaux. A very tight black cherry nose with cedar, smoke and cigar box. The palate is very well balanced with fine structure and definition with notes of blackberry leaf, Morello, cranberry and cedar. Cohesive, very good depth, solid with a firm, ripe, succulent finish. This is delightful.

Slightly light crimson. Competent reasonably sleek though it's difficult to see real soul and personality. Big and bold and bloody with substantial tannins. Maybe just embryonic, but very stolid. Dry finish. Hard work! Though there is some succulence in the middle. just inexpressive for now would be my guess. Good texture. 17++
