Rauzan Gassies - Margaux 2022

Château Rauzan-Gassies, a secular history

Château RAUZAN-GASSIES, second classified growth in 1855 in the Margaux appellation, owes its name to Chevalier de Rauzan, who transformed the maison noble de Gassies into a famous wine estate in the 17th century.

Greatly attracted by this outstanding terroir, Monsieur Paul Quié, passionate about wine, acquired the château in 1946. The vineyard of Château Rauzan Gassies covers 30 hectares located in the Margaux appellation.
His son, Jean-Michel, assisted by his children, perpetuates today the tradition of this famous estate, which is the guardian and ambassador of the family's values.

Château Rauzan-Gassies produces deeply-colored, elegant, complex wines with a velvety texture that is typical of great wines with superb ageing potential.

Key Points
- Family owned and managed
- Small production, as a matter of fact, Rauzan Gassies is part of the smallest Grand Cru Classé of Margaux
- The only Grand Cru Classé 1855 managed by twins
- A good quality and well rated wine

At last, Château Rauzan-Gassies 2022 has revealed the pure and exquisite character I had been longing for. The aroma is rich and well-defined, with a prominent note of black mulberry interlaced with classic hints of violet fragrance. Despite the press wine ratio reaching 19% in this vintage, the texture is unexpectedly silky and smooth, with even the firm tannins at the finish being noticeably milder than expected. Undoubtedly, this is the finest rendition of Château Rauzan-Gassies that I have had the privilege of tasting so far. With a touch of more roundness, this wine would be truly exceptional.

A great example of this estate, silky tannins, lean and slightly reserved dark fruits, riven with sage and spiced cumin fruits, hard to argue with and will be relative value. Great job from the family here.

The 2022 Château Rauzan-Gassies checks in as a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot raised in 57% new barrels. Its inky ruby/plum hue is followed by an impressive nose of ripe black cherries, redcurrants, spicy oak, and flowery incense. This carries to a medium to full-bodied Margaux offering plenty of mid-palate depth, ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish. It's beautifully done and well worth seeking out. It's going to evolve gracefully over the coming two decades.

The 2022 Rauzan Gassies continues to show plenty of pressed flower aromas on the nose, perhaps obscuring the fruit profile more than I would have liked. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, mocha-tinged black fruit and a solid finish that just lacks the finesse of its peers. This is not a bad Rauzan Gassies, though I need to be convinced of its longevity.

Very pretty blackberries and blackcurrants to this wine, with a hint of lead pencil. It’s medium-bodied with creamy and refined tannins and a polished finish. A Rauzan-Gassies that shows precision and focus, especially in this hot vintage. Drink after 2027 and beyond.

The 2022 Rauzan Gassies is an elegant, mid-weight Margaux. It's perhaps a bit ripe in this vintage but still classy. Dark-toned fruit, cloves, new leather and sweet spice are all nicely lifted throughout. Attractive floral overtones extend the finish. This will drink well with minimal cellaring.

Juicy and clean, this has a lovely soft elegance, lighter in terms of fruit density than some, but still super tannic, they're fleshy but cool and really fill the mouth. This keeps the precision though, a full and dense wine, but stays the right side in all the areas - acidity, fruit, tannins, freshness and length. Nice potential here for a really enjoyable easy drinking wine still with flavour and structure. Tasted twice. Harvest 9-26 September. Yield of 29hl/ha. Ageing in French oak for 18 months.

Medium deep crimson. Fresh cassis, plm, red liquorice aromas with savoury notes. Well concentrated with ample blackcurrant, liquorice flavours and fine gravelly/ al dente tannins. Finishes briary and minerally. (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot 50-55% new oak)

A Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend that includes roughly 20% Merlot, the 2022 Château Rauzan-Gassies might end up being the finest vintage I've tasted from this château. Loaded with red, blue, and black fruits, it's medium to full-bodied, has supple, elegant tannins, classic aromatics of lead pencil and dried flowers, and outstanding length.

Flowers, black raspberries, currants, spice, and licorice create the aromatic profile. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, soft, supple, and forward, finishing with black currants, cherries, touches of spice, and savory herbs on the backend of the chalky finish. Drink from 2026-2040.

Definitely more concentrated than usual though a little brutal in structure with rather jagged tannins. Needs a bit of time. The opposite of graceful but there is clearly effort being put into it nowadays.

Pretty sample of RG this year with lots of blackberry and blackcurrant character. Full and juicy with solid tannins.

A highly successful Rauzan Gassies that provides a understated, nuanced interpretation of the vintage, with waves of red rose and peony floral aromatics and toasted spice from the first nose. Has depth and concentration of black cherry and cassis fruits, and balances the flash of heat with plenty of white pepper and cinnammon notes, fresh lemongrass acidities and a lift through the palate. Impressive from the Quié family, and should be good value.
