Pym-Rae - Napa Valley 2017

30 bts maximum per order

The Tesseron family (Pontet Canet) bought this large property of 260 hectaires in 2016. 7 hectares only are planted with vines (average : 29 years old), at a high elevation : one plot at 500m and another at 600m. It is located in the disctrict of Mount Veeder, one of the most qualitative mountain vineyards of Napa. 2016 was the first vintage produced, 2017 is thus the second release.

The wine is vinified in 40 small concrete vats of 10 hectoliters, smaller than a man ! A true tailor-made vinification.

The ageing is made in new oak barrels (50%) and in concrete tanks (50%).

The vineyard is organically and biodynamically farmed.

Pym-Rae is a truly unique wine, produced in very limited quantity.

« We believe in Nature. Our job is to manage the vineyard and to understand the vine so that it is in perfect health.» Alfred Tesseron

THE VINTAGE
2017 was a challenging vintage. After a particularly wet and cold winter, the growing season started late. The following part of the year went to a ‘classic’ Californian story: Sun, heat and blue sky! However, despite a few days in a row with over 110°F early September in the valley, our grapes remained healthy and balanced due to our altitude vineyard which benefits from a fresher climate.
The end of the season was marked by important fires in the region. At Pym-Rae, only our Cabernet Franc were affected. We have thus excluded them from the final blend.
Our vineyard went through extreme conditions, from a wet winter to a very hot summer. We obtained an intense and powerful wine, balanced with a beautiful freshness characteristic from our terroir.

Rather rich, flamboyant and decadent with bright raspberries, mushrooms and bark. Full-bodied, yet very tight and refined, with firmness and length. Racy and fine for a 2017. No cabernet franc in the blend, just cabernet sauvignon and merlot. Drink after 2023.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Pym-Rae leaps from the glass with bold notions of black cherries, mulberries, plum preserves and dark chocolate with an opulent undercurrent of Indian spices, potpourri, sandalwood and cinnamon stick. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with rich, seductive black fruit preserves and an explosion of exotic spice sparks, framed by firm yet beautifully plush tannins and fantastic tension, finishing very long and achingly fragrant. Possessing loads more weight and mid-palate density than a lot of 2017s, this second showing is an absolute knock-out. Due to strict selection, only around 1500 cases were made this year.

This is only the second vintage off this estate, following the purchase of the old Robin Williams vineyard and house by Chateau Pontet-Canet proprietor Alfred Tesseron back in 2016. As a reminder, the estate includes just under 20 acres of mature Cabernet Sauvignon (75%), Merlot (18%) and Cabernet Franc (7%) vines, planted in 1990. Tesseron named the Estate and wine “Pym-Rae,” in respect for the original name given to the vineyard by Robin Williams (Pym and Rae are the middle names of two of Williams’s children). The site is perched at an average altitude of 1,500 feet (500 meters) on Mount Veeder. Currently, the wines are made at a dedicated cellar up on Howell Mountain, one that I have visited and at which I witnessed the 2016 vintage in production. Thomas Comme, the son of Jean-Michel Comme, the winemaker at Chateau Pontet-Canet, is winemaker and has lived at the vineyard since 2016. As expected, the 2017 was a challenge. Comme mentioned that the Labor Day heatwave spiked at 117 degrees on the property. The vines on the upper part of the estate managed to motor right through, but there was some shut-down amongst the lower vines. No post-fires fruit was used in the blend and so there is no Cabernet Franc in the 2017.
