Le Prieuré - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2022

A new era for this Saint-Emilion gem

In 2020, Les Terroirs de Suravenir, a subsidiary of the Arkea Credit Mutuel Group that already owns Château Calon Ségur, invested on the right bank by buying châteaux Prieuré, Vray Croix de Gay and Siaurac. True to their values, they have a long-term approach. In their ambitious development project, the teams are guided by the respect of history and the revelation of the potential of the terroir.

Château Le Prieuré, an outstanding diversity

Château Le Prieuré is a 6.24-hectare vineyard located immediately alongside the medieval town. Its vineyard dating back to the 16th century is located between Trottevieille, Troplong Mondot, and Pavie Macquin, above the old town, facing Ausone. The vines grow on Saint-Emilion’s limestone plateau and on the south-facing clay-limestone slopes. It is a unique and exceptional location, with panoramic views over the Dordogne valley, where several elements contribute to the site’s rich biodiversity: low stone walls, hedgerows, fruit trees, terraces, copses, etc.

"The 2022 Le Prieuré is another magnificent wine from one of Saint-Émilion’s most under the radar properties." Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 94-96pts.

Both during En Primeur and after bottling, this wine displayed noticeable volatile acidity. Fortunately, its aromatic expression remained impressive, and the fine powdery tannins unique to limestone clay were distinctly present, creating a good balance without any issue. On the aftertaste, the “sucré-salé” flavor are highly distinctive, with rose nectar and salted dried plum aromas painting a delicate and tender picture, reminiscent of a young girl blossoming into maturity. With 92% Merlot in the blend, the 2022 was aslo made in the its temporary cellar for the first time.

Retains a limestone fingerprint in terms of its texture, its sappy black fruits, and its ocean spray salinity on the signoff. trace of heat here but this is a delicious wine. 30% new oak for ageing. Harvest September 13 to 26. 40hl/h yields, the highest across the Calon Ségur portfolio of five estates, on limestone soils, south facing, 6ha extra this vintage from Ch Malineau that they bought in 2021, slightly different soils (colluvial) so that stopped the classification in 2022.

2027-2044 95/100

The 2022 Le Prieuré, the first vintage overseen by the Calon-Ségur team, offers a more outgoing and opulent bouquet than its stablemate Vray Croix de Gay, with scents of blackberry, potpourri and light tobacco that barrel maturation has tempered. The palate features fine-boned tannins and a fresh, linear style, eschewing the warmth of the vintage and feeling sapid toward the finish. This classy Saint-Émilion will age well in bottle. This is recommended.

The 2022 Le Prieuré is a classy wine with undeniable finesse. There is a bit more mid-palate richness than is the norm here. Dark cherry, mocha, new leather and licorice build in the glass. As always, Le Prieuré is one of the more elegant, mid-weight wines from Saint-Émilion. Beams of tannin and brisk acids lift the finish.

High toned and serious on the nose, concentrated, intense, ripe and perfumed, a touch of alcohol also. Focussed and taught but with a really super juicy and appealing initial burst of flavour, herbal raspberries, creamy strawberries and some stalky bramble blackcurrant giving sweetness, spice and tension. Clean, balanced and slick, this is stylish, generous and likeable but still with a serious core. The texture is wonderful, tannins are perfectly weighted and integrated. A success. 3.75pH. Ageing 18 months, 30% new oak. Eric Boissenot consultant.

I have tasted Château Le Prieuré 2022 twice, I noted a slight hint of volatile acidity at both tastings. However, the fragrance displays a remarkable expression, with the limestone-clay terroir's distinctive powdery tannins being quite discernible. Particularly on the finish, the sweet cherries and rose honey create a faintly sweet and nostalgic image of a blossoming young lady. As long as there are no issues with bottling, this will undoubtedly be an outstanding Saint-Émilion wine.

The 2022 Le Prieuré is a blend of 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc, delivering a powerful 15.2% alcohol this year. For the first time, it contains fruit from Château Malineau, which features more clayey soil that Vincent Millet remarks lends to the cuvée its rondeur. It is matured in 30% new oak for 18 months. It has quite a rich and opulent bouquet, with confit-like blueberry and cassis fruit. I find this conveys less delineation than the Vray Croix de Gay and perhaps previous recent vintages. The palate is sweet and ripe on the entry with vivacious blueberry and cassis fruit, citrus fruit, hints of blood orange with a smear of dark chocolate toward the finish. Quite a "punchy" Saint-Émilion, but I may just prefer the 2020 by comparison.

The 2022 Le Prieure, 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc, is deep garnet-purple in color. It comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant notes of black cherry preserves, juicy black plums; and black raspberries, followed by suggestions of cinnamon toast, candied violets, and garrigue. The big, rich, full-bodied palate is bursting with juicy black and blue fruits, framed by velvety tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and perfumed. pH 3.75.

The 2022 Le Prieuré is another magnificent wine from one of Saint-Émilion’s most under the radar properties. Dark blue/purplish fruit, gravel, spice, menthol and lavender are all finely delineated. As always, Le Prieuré is a wine of cool sophistication and finesse. Clean mineral notes extend the finish effortlessly. Superb. Drinking window : 2030-2060

Exhibiting high-toned aromas of dark berries, balsamic cherries and fruit compote, the 2022 Le Prieuré is medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with a ripe, heady core of fruit, supple tannins and a saline finish. Calon Ségur's Vincent Millet has big plans for this estate, so it will be an address to follow closely.
