Le Prieuré - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2014

A new era for this Saint-Emilion gem

In 2020, Les Terroirs de Suravenir, a subsidiary of the Arkea Credit Mutuel Group that already owns Château Calon Ségur, invested on the right bank by buying châteaux Prieuré, Vray Croix de Gay and Siaurac. True to their values, they have a long-term approach. In their ambitious development project, the teams are guided by the respect of history and the revelation of the potential of the terroir.

Château Le Prieuré, an outstanding diversity

Château Le Prieuré is a 6.24-hectare vineyard located immediately alongside the medieval town. Its vineyard dating back to the 16th century is located between Trottevieille, Troplong Mondot, and Pavie Macquin, above the old town, facing Ausone. The vines grow on Saint-Emilion’s limestone plateau and on the south-facing clay-limestone slopes. It is a unique and exceptional location, with panoramic views over the Dordogne valley, where several elements contribute to the site’s rich biodiversity: low stone walls, hedgerows, fruit trees, terraces, copses, etc.

This is quite a dry and tannic wine, but it has lovely fruit, and the tannins only become a bit dominant on the crisp, lemony finish. Give it time to open. Better in 2019.

The 2014 Le Prieuré is fine and elegant, but also lacking in depth. Expressive in its aromatics, the 2014 offers good potential, but that never comes through on the palate, where the wine lacks depth and intensity. This was much more exciting from barrel. Tasted two times.

The 2014 Le Prieuré is rich, powerful and intense, with notable concentration and a real sense of vibrancy. Smoke, tar, licorice, blue fruits and leather are some of the notes that add complexity through the finish. This pliant, super-expressive St.-Emilion hits all the right notes, with lovely balance and fine-grained tannins that round things out nicely.

Medium-bodied with a touch of oak among the fresh plum notes, this wine is soft, forward and easy to drink. The new partnership with the owners of Chateau Latour certainly made a difference as this is one of the best vintages from this estate in years. 89-91 Pts

First vintage with Château Latour as a partner. Dark and dense. Solid fruit extract. Tannins powerful but honed. Firm, persistent finish. Ageing potential. Drink: 2020-2030 (89)

Some floral aromas but a bit austere and thin on the palate. Low key for a Grand Cru Classé. Drink 2019-2027

Some dark fruit with firm tannins and a lemon peel undertone. Medium body, firm tannins and a fresh finish.

Features plum sauce and raspberry pâte de fruit notes that stay refined, with subtle structure guiding the finish while hints of sandalwood and tea weave through.Shows a touch of wood for now, but should soak that up easily enough.
