Just as it was from barrel, the 2018 Poujeaux is superb. Succulent red cherry, spice, cedar, tobacco and leather give the 2018 striking textural richness to match is bold, racy personality. Silky tannins make the 2018 very easy to taste now, but this is a wine with the potential to age beautifully for many years. Impressive.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Poujeaux comes bounding out of the glass with youthful scents of crushed black cherries, mulberries and blackcurrant pastilles, plus hints of menthol, pencil lead and tobacco leaf. The medium-bodied palate offers just enough fruit and freshness with a chewy texture and dried herbs lift on the finish.

Ripe black cherries and cassis, along with tobacco leaf and herbs create the nose. On the palate, the wine offers a full-body, layers of ripe, round, rich fruit. The finish is packed with more of those ripe, spicy, fresh, sweet, black and red berries with licorice, espresso and dark cocoa coming in at the end of the finish.

The 2018 Poujeaux has an intense bouquet featuring layers of blackberry and bilberry fruit, a light marine scent and a lingering a patina of oak that still needs time to be subsumed. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet entry, plush and very pliant tannins framing a Poujeaux of impressive volume and grip. Cohesive from start to finish, it shuts down a little on the finish, indicating that this Moulis has long-term plans.

Pretty aromas of wild blackberries, violets, milk chocolate and licorice. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, creamy tannins. Polished and concentrated. Better from 2024.

The 2018 Poujeaux displays good intensity on the nose, which is much more vivid and vivacious than recent vintages, featuring copious black cherry, bilberry and light marine aromas. The new oak here is well integrated. The palate is smooth on the entry with plush, almost luxuriant tannins. There is a sense of cohesion here, although the oak dominates the finish at the moment. This is a Poujeaux of substance; what it needs is a little more finesse on the finish, although I suspect that will develop with bottle age. Great potential.

The 2018 Château Poujeaux has plenty of potential and is an impressive Moulis. Pretty notes of black cherries, pipe tobacco, and freshly tilled earth all give way to a medium-bodied, nicely textured 2018 that has good ripeness in its fruit and tannins, outstanding balance, and great finish. It has plenty of potential.

One of the stars of the vintage, the 2018 Poujeaux is rich, luscious and bold, with a level of fruit density I don't recall seeing in the past. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, licorice and spice are all pushed forward in this racy, succulent Moulis. This is an especially fine Poujeaux. Don't miss it.

Le vin est précis, juteux avec une chair ample, expansive et une pointe chaleureuse peut-être. La finale est jolie.

Opening up with black raspberries, espresso bean and tobacco leaf, the wine is full-bodied, round and ripe. The fruit is rich, juicy and deep, giving the wine structure and backbone, along with sweet, earthy fruits, bitter chocolate and anise in the finish.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the nose of the 2018 Poujeaux is a little reticent to begin, offering glimpses at smoked meats and tar over a core of warm red and black currants plus a waft of Marmite toast. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers plenty of earth-laced black fruit and a firm, chewy texture, finishing with an herbal lift.

Flavors of plum and cherry preserves are melded nicely with cocoa and tobacco notes. Soft and rounded, yet persistent on the finish.

Poujeaux is a wine that I often hold up as classic example of what the Médoc can achieve, and here again it's a huge success. It has a beautiful nose, with vibrant and well extracted brambly dark fruits on the palate - but not so much that it feels like it's pushing too hard. It's an architectural wine, a more classic take on the vintage, but for me this is where the money is in Moulis. It takes its time to unravel, and the heat of the summer comes through in its rich, ripe mouthfeel. The tannins close in on the finish, which has a menthol and eucalyptus edge that suggests a long life ahead.
