Potensac - Médoc 2022

The estate

Although close to the river, Potensac is situated on a high point of land in North Medoc. Planted on the best quality soils in the Ordonnac district, the vineyards now extend over 60 hectares mainly over hilly mounds with a limestone subsoil covered with clay and gravel outcrops containing a high proportion of gravel ("graves"). These limestone soils are very similar to those found in the Saint-Estèphe appellation. On this very special terroir, some plots of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc planted over 80 years ago still produce perfectly ripe, healthy grapes. The hamlet of Potensac was already cited in the first edition of Féret for the special characteristics and longevity of its wines.

The 2022 vintage

The 2022 vintage at Potensac is probably one of the best of the last twenty years. The quality from the first growth to the last bunch harvested is exceptional. This splendid terroir, planted on two clay-gravel hilltops on a limestone base, was able in these intense conditions to produce an outstanding Potensac wine.

While tasting Château Potensac 2021 last year, I noted that the vintage had not yet fully expressed itself. Fast forward a year, and the 2022 vintage has bloomed into a shining star. A simple swirl releases an abundance of fresh fruit aromas, instantly conjuring a vivid scene teeming with energy, much like stepping into Barcelona’s Mercat de Sant Antoni, where a feast of fruits fills the air. The wine delivers a harmonious balance of richness and elegance, with refined tannins weaving intricate layers of depth and silkiness. A delicate hint of mocha graces the finish, adding a serene sophistication that leaves a lasting sense of joy and contentment.

One of the sleepers of the vintage is the 2022 Potensac, a dense, concentrated wine redolent of crème de cassis, cigar wrapper and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, layered and youthfully structured, this will reward a bit of patience.

Deep plum in colour, this is definitely an impressive Potensac, a ton of graphite, poise, reserve, excellent balance, gives Médoc typicity but also the Delon seriousness and ageability. You can drink this now if you like this pumped up Left Bank feel, or wait, enjoy the slow burn cassis and bilberry. Definitely one to watch.

The 2022 Château Potensac is darker and more concentrated, featuring currants, spring flowers, and graphite. Medium to full-bodied, with layered depth, balanced structure, and beautiful tannins, it’s a serious, structured Potensac that should evolve well for 15-20+ years.

The 2022 Potensac, matured in 20% new oak, was one of the best vintages from this Haut-Médoc that I had tasted from barrel. Now in bottle, this is blessed with an impressive, well-defined, focused nose. Its oak is neatly integrated, with plenty of vibrant black fruit laced with light estuarine scents. The palate is medium-bodied and very saline, with touches of sapid black fruit, black olive and black pepper. It's nicely controlled and classical, with residual pepperiness on the finish. This is very fine.

One of the best ever with super currants, mint, mineral and iodine. Crushed stones. Medium- to full-bodied, it has wonderful caressing tannins that run the length of the wine. A real Potensac, cabernet-driven, that goes on for minutes. 43% cabernet sauvignon, 36.5% merlot, 19.5% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot. Drink after 2028 but already fantastic and one of the best values of the vintage.

The 2022 Potensac is a pretty rich, heady Haut-Médoc. Blue/purplish fruit, spice, new leather, menthol and sage fill out the layers nicely. The 2022 offers a combination of fruit depth and vibrancy that is hugely appealing. This opens beautifully with a bit of coaxing.

Fragranced, black bramble fruit, so scented and aromatic. Crystalline pure fruit, blackcurrants, cherries and plums, with grippy, but super fine and fresh tannins and balanced acidity. You get the structure - wide, firm, so refined in terms of tannic impression, they're at the fore but so discerning and integrated, really supportive and help to focus the wine from start to finish. Precise and sleek, agile yet concentrated with a lovely cool and juicy core alongside graphite and pencil lead touches. Powerful but polished and ageable. A great buy. 1% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 3.64pH. 82 IPT.

Upon tasting Château Potensac 2021 last year, I marveled at how the vintage had yet to reveal its true potential. Now, the 2022 Château Potensac radiates resplendent brilliance. A gentle whiff of the glass reveals an abundance of fresh berries, evoking a vision of a fruit-laden feast at Barcelona's San Antoni Market. The wine possesses a rich body, with abundant and intricate tannins dancing upon the palate, offering both profound structure and velvety texture. A subtle hint of mocha in the finish adorns me a lot.

The 2022 Potensac has an intense bouquet with layered red and black fruit, cedar and light mint aromas. This is a Potensac with purpose. The palate is a little creamier than previous vintages on the entry, but then the tannic framework makes its presence felt. Firm grip, quite fresh and sappy with a fine thread of acidity maintaining poise. This is a superb Potensac. Tasted twice with consistent notes, though the wood came through more at the château compared to another at Boissenot's tasting.

A blend of 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36.5% Merlot, 19.5% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2022 Potensac is deep garnet-purple in color. It needs a bit of swirling to bring out notes of crushed blackberries, cassis, and warm plums, with hints of cracked black pepper and fertile loam. The medium to full-bodied palate is packed with black fruit preserves, supported by firm, grainy tannins and just enough freshness, with loads of savory sparks on the finish. Nice!

The 2022 Château Potensac is based on 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and a splash of Petit Verdot. It has lots of ripe blue fruits, graphite, and gravelly earth to go with full-bodied richness and depth on the palate. It's a big, rich, tannic Potensac that's going to be long lived. I suspect 3-5 years of bottle age will be warranted here. 90-92+

The 2022 Potensac is super-expressive right out of the gate. Black cherry, plum, lavender, spice, and gravel are all beautifully delineated. Pliant and beautifully layered, the 2022 marries density and vibrancy to great effect. There’s quite a bit of tannin, but also enough fruit to balance things out. The 2022 is a serious Potensac, that is for sure. Once again, Jean-Hubert Delon and his team made a Médoc that overdelivers big time. Drinking window : 2027-2042

Tobacco leaf, cedar, peppery herbs, and black fruits show on the nose, and on the palate. There is volume, intensity, concentration, tannic structure, and a regal bearing for the wine on the palate. By miles, this is the most complete vintage for Potensac I have ever tasted. The wine was produced from blending 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36.5% Merlot, 19.5% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.14.52% ABV. Drink from 2026-2045.

Aromas of dark berries, cigar wrapper and licorice introduce the 2022 Potensac, a medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy Médoc with a deep core of fruit and powdery structuring tannins. It's built along similar lines to the 2020.

Polished and refined with a deep core of ripe berries with walnut undertones. Medium- to full-bodied with firm, velvety tannins and a lingering finish. Deep and complex.
