La Pointe - Pomerol 2022

The 2022 vintage

Despite a hot and, above all, very dry summer, the vines were on top form. The great dedication of the technical team regarding the evolution in farming practices, the respect of microbial life in the soils and the mastery of vegetal cover are all concrete factors allowing the vine to resist in the context of ever more contrasting weather conditions. We observed proof of this in the beautiful green foliage which remained active right up until mid-October.

We quickly discovered rich and well-balanced juices, presenting a wonderful acidity, confirming that the grapes (especially the Merlots) were picked at the ideal moment.

Château La Pointe 2022 retains its signature softness and elegance. Reflecting on the harvest season, where water shortages left many grapes desiccated, the wine’s achievement is all the more remarkable. A delicate extraction imparts a smooth texture to the palate, though the expected violet fragrance feels slightly subdued. With greater depth in its fruit expression, the wine’s “nightingale” charm would undoubtedly be even more pronounced.

Rich plum in colour, touches of smoked caramel, espresso, liquorice and sweet oak on the opening, this is luscious, with plenty of Pomerol character, easy to love, a crowd pleaser with grilled spices and damson fruit, fully ripe with ability to age. Eric Monneret director, Pierre Candelier winemaker.

2026-2040 94/100

The 2022 La Pointe, matured in 50% new oak, has a tightly wound blackberry- and bilberry-scented bouquet that is very well defined with nicely integrated wood. It offers a lovely crushed violet aroma that gains intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with pleasing sapidity, hints of black olive and touches of orange rind. It's structured and quite classic but with sufficient flesh on the finish. This is a very fine, sophisticated Pomerol that will age well in bottle. Don't overlook this.

A fine, creamy nose with vanilla, berries, plums, milk chocolate and sweet spices. Sleek, juicy and fresh on the palate, this has medium body and an expressive and persistent finish. The tannins are fully melted. Tempting now, but the flattering wood spices should better integrate in two to three years. Try after 2026.

The 2022 La Pointe is a classy, elegant Pomerol. Silky tannins, lifted aromatics and gracious, mid-weight structure lend notable charm throughout. Spice, rose petal and blood orange lift a core of red-toned fruit in this elegant, poised La Pointe.

Vibrant colour, deep vivid purple. Amazingly scented, perfumed and expressive on the nose, vanilla, white chocolate, creamy red cherries, plums, raspberries, toast and liquorice. Juicy and sharp, high acidity makes the mark straight away before a clean, salty, stony texture comes through. Fruit is concentrated but also crisp and lively giving a sense of joy and energy, before the structure and power come in, focussing the wine into more of a straight line towards the pointed finish. Long and detailed with freshness and soft spiced elements from the Cabernet Franc. There’s a lot of tannins here but balanced by acidity. Feels like hands off winemaker, careful not to extract too much weight and mass. Ageing 12 months, 50% new, 50% one year. Earliest harvest ever starting on 5 September finishing on the 17th. A yield of 30hl/ha. Extraction was very gentle according to winemaker Eric Monneret. 'It was such a strong vintage with the risk of creating a monster. You have to accept not to take everything'.

Château La Pointe 2022 still showcases its gentle character, yet the expected violet floral scent is somewhat restrained. Thanks to the gentle tannin extraction, its texture is relatively smooth, displaying mild personality traits. Nevertheless, if more layers of fruit aromas could be added, I believe its "Lark" temperament would be more pronounced.

Deep crimson. Fresh and classical dark plum, black cherry aromas and flavours, fine looseknit chocolaty tannins, attractive mid palate density and fresh long mineral acidity. Some savoury notes at the finish. (Merlot Cabernet Franc 50% new oak)

An open and welcoming nose, supple tannins and natural concentration to the creamy raspberry and red cherry fruits. Grilled cedar, vanilla bean, coffee, plenty of juice, this is a great vintage to get to grips with the improvements that have been happening at La Pointe, and it's a delicious wine with appellation signature. Eric Monneret director, Pierre Candelier winemaker.

The 2022 La Pointe, 84% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc, is deep garnet-purple in color. Juicy blackberries, plum preserves, and raspberry coulis notes jump from the glass followed by suggestions of violets, tar, and cracked black pepper with a waft of aniseed. The medium to full-bodied palate is laden with savory-laced black fruits, supported by grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing on a lingering licorice note. pH 3.7.

Notably fragrant – almost floral. Not the most concentrated, nor the freshest, but a pretty wine with no rough edges. Just a slight suggestion of super-ripe fruit. And not that much tannin. Sightly messy finish.

Lovely balance to this wine and you see polished tannins with ovaltine and hazelnut character. Medium body. Juicy. From organically grown grapes. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc.
