Poggio Antico, Rosso Di Montalcino - Rosso di Montalcino D.0 2021

Poggio Antico, high up in the hills of Montalcino

Poggio Antico is one of Montalcino's most elevated estates, situated southwest of the fame medieval citadel. Its 35-hectare (86 acres) vineyard area is cultivated at an altitude of almost 500 meters (1 640 ft). The estate's unique location, high altitude, and perfect exposure all contribute to the ideal conditions which give the wines of Poggio Antico intense bouquets and incredible finesse. Founded in 1976, a new team arrived at the head of the estate in 2017. As soon as they arrived, they led a soil survey to identify the micro terroirs within the vineyard in order to implement a polt-by-plot approach. They have launched many new and exciting projects, including the organic conversion of the vineyards, cellar renovations and plans for a new hospitality center.

Poggio Antico, Rosso di Montalcino D.O.C, is the younger expression of estate grown Sangiovese fruit. Aged in oak for a minimum of 8 months, this juicy wine fills your glass with succulent fruity notes. Fresh and delicious.

The 2021 vintage

The cold winter and spring (with temperatures below average) led to a slow sprouting. Abundant rains during the growing season allowed the plant to reach the right balance, an indispensable condition to accumulate a large amount of polyphenols and to get a perfect ripeness. Lastly, the strong temperature shifts during September and October, enhanced the phenolic component of each single vineyard.

The 2021 Rosso di Montalcino is dark and intense, smoldering up with masses of smoky black cherries, sage and incense. This possesses a core of ripe wild berry fruit underscored by saline minerals and savory spice, all guided by zesty acidity. The 2021 finishes structured and long, with a concentration that reminds me more of Brunello than Rosso, leaving grippy tannins and hints of sour citrus that keep me looking back to the glass for more. There will be a 10% reduction in quantity for 2021 due to hail in August. The decision was also made to reduce maceration time down to a month, using a gentler practice to counterbalance the character of this warm and dry vintage.

The 2021 Rosso di Montalcino entices with an orange burst that opens the stage for a mix of medicinal cherries and crushed wild blueberries. This keeps the energy high as it smooths over the palate with texturally ripe red fruits and sweet spice. It finishes long and staining, yet only lightly structured, leaving a licorice tinge that lingers on.

The Poggio Antico 2021 Rosso di Montalcino offers dark cherry and blackberry over a mid-weight presentation and a velvety texture. The wine feels ripe and saturated. The approach works overall, but the alcohol content, measured here at 15.5%, really is too much. It makes drinking more than a few glasses undesirable and is not suited to this entry-level category. This is a 13,000-bottle release.

Ruby plum colour, sweet ripe fruits, rich, nuanced, welcoming, classic Rosso di Montalcino, good typicity. Easy to approach, flash of heat from the ripe raspberry and red cherry fruits, this is effortlessly charming with spiced turmeric and sage notes, alongside underbrush and savoury broth, that keeps things from straying into overly sweet territory. 33ha estate. Aged in 500l oak casks for one year.
