Poggio Antico Riserva - Brunello Di Montalcino 2017

Poggio Antico, high up in the hills of Montalcino

Poggio Antico is one of Montalcino's most elevated estates, situated southwest of the fame medieval citadel. Its 35-hectare (86 acres) vineyard area is cultivated at an altitude of almost 500 meters (1 640 ft). The estate's unique location, high altitude, and perfect exposure all contribute to the ideal conditions which give the wines of Poggio Antico intense bouquets and incredible finesse. Founded in 1976, a new team arrived at the head of the estate in 2017. As soon as they arrived, they led a soil survey to identify the micro terroirs within the vineyard in order to implement a polt-by-plot approach. They have launched many new and exciting projects, including the organic conversion of the vineyards, cellar renovations and plans for a new hospitality center.

Poggio Antico, Riserva Brunello di Montalcino D.O.C.G, is only made during exceptional vintages from a selection of the best Sangiovese in the vineyards. Released 6 years after harvest, the Riserva is aged in wooden barrels (both French and Slavonian). This is the fullest of Poggio Antico's 3 Brunellos.

The 2017 vintage

Despite the drought brought by one of the hottest summers of the last decades, the grapes have regularly matured thanks to the abundant water reserve (accumulated during the winter) and the high altitude of our vineyards. All of these elements have enhanced Poggio Antico’s terroir, endowing the wines with the right concentration and a pleasing fruity character. A vintage to discover.

Hickory smoked bbq sauce and ketchup on the nose - sweet, savoury leather and ripe fruit aromas. Bright and vertical, supple but also a little dry from the start, the tannis filling the mouth with a chalky, powdery grip - feels concentrated and intense right now and as a result some of the fruit friendliness has been lost. Acidity is there giving the base and keeping things lifted but the flavours are more savoury. Lightly framed with detailed aspects and a sense of verticality on the palate.

Packaged with its distinctive black label, the Poggio Antico 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva reveals an accessible or open-knit character that is commonly found in wines from this scorching hot and dry growing season, even in the Riservas that are built for long aging. Despite those aspirations, I would recommend a near or medium-term drinking window for this bold Sangiovese that is laced with ripe cherry, baked plum, balsam herb and cured tobacco. Indeed, very few producers took the courageous decision to produce a Riserva in 2017. The wine shows soft tannins and a note of fruity sweetness on the finish. Production is 9,000 bottles.

Poggio Antico has 33 hectares of vines, with 26 hectares designated to the production of Brunello di Montalcino. The estate started its conversion to organic farming in 2017. The estate just named a new general manager, Pier Giuseppe D'Alessandro, to replace the outgoing Federico Trost.

Well-structured, with intensity and concentration through the mid palate while retaining a sense of lightness, soaring upwards, savoury and flavourful as it goes. A charming wine, with real typicity, delicate and delineated, well placed and supple tannins, good stuff.

I like the bitter chocolate, oreo and dried earth undertones to the dark cherry and mushroom fruit. Dense and compact, with a full body and firm, chewy tannins. Tannic. Give it a few years to calm down. Try after 2025.
