Pichon Comtesse - Réserve - Pauillac 2022

Reserve of Pichon Comtesse, the worthy ambassador of its elder brother

Ideally located in Pauillac, on the banks of the Gironde Estuary, the Pichon Comtesse vineyard covers 102 hectares (252 acres). Here, the vineyard and the wines are managed independently of each other. Each of the estate's plots are tended throughout the year with equal attention to detail and precision before the grapes are harvested and vinified separately. Then comes the time to taste these various expressions of the terroir, an important step during which the specific composition of each wine is blended.

In perfect harmony with the Grand Vin, Réserve de Pichon Comtesse, the estate's second wine, offers another interpretation of the unique and singular style of this Pauillac Grand Cru Classé. This subtle and elegant wine is delicately revealed through floral and fruity notes. Its depth and balance, direct yet velvety, give it unique grandeur in which the language of the senses is key. It goes beyond mere taste. Full of charm, it has that extra-special something that makes it stands out as a true ambassador for Pichon Comtesse.

Réserve de Pichon Comtesse benefits from the same high quality work as the Grand Vin and includes in its blend young vines recently replanted and located on the greatest terroirs of this vineyard. A true introduction to the Pichon Comtesse style, its high quality combined with its price make it a particularly interesting opportunity.

The 2022 vintage - Sunny Side Story

"This year, our remarkably adaptable, resilient and courageous vines succeeded in producing smooth, delicious Merlot and elegant, aristocratic Cabernet wines despite the unprecedented and demanding conditions... It was our turn to be surprised!" Nicolas Glumineau, CEO & Winemaker

Tasting notes

The nose of this wine is particularly complex and emblematic of the Pauillac terroir, with mineral notes of cedar and liquorice that gradually give way to richer aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant and violet. The palate is juicy and flavoursome. The wine starts out ethereal with delicious notes of strawberry and cherry, going onto reveal all its charm and softness before culminating in a long finish with smooth, precise and powdery tannins. This Réserve wine is quite simply mesmerising.

"The 2022 is so impressive, mostly because of its balance" Vinous, Antonio Galloni, 91-93pts

Readers shouldn't overlook the 2022 Resèrve de la Comtesse, a lovely wine that's one of the most accomplished second wines of Bordeaux. Offering up aromas of sweet minty berries, burning embers, pencil shavings and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, lavish and aromatic, with an almost exotic core of fruit, powdery tannins and a penetrating finish.

Beautiful depth of colour, enticing aromatics, holds your interest, dark chocolate block, slate and firm tannins, luscious fruit, clearly ripe, but it keeps the Pauillac signature, getting a shot of espresso and pure bilberry as it opens, super enjoyable, not quite as persistent perhaps as the very best years, but this is good. Nicolas Glumineau director, Eric Boissenot consultant. Harvest September 8, lasting for three weeks.

Deep purple-hued, the 2022 Pichon Comtesse Reserve is based on 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, raised 14 months in 50% new barrels. It's beautifully done and has a ripe, layered, yet still classic style in its ripe black and blue fruits, graphite, and floral notes. It's medium to full-bodied and has a round, layered mouthfeel and ripe tannins. I’d be thrilled to drink a bottle any time over the coming 15+ years.

The al dente fruit is so attractive with blackcurrants, dark plums and orange peel. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with tannins that start slowly, building at the end to a crescendo of intensity and power. It’s muscular and chewy but not overdone. A great second wine of Pichon Lalande. Needs time to soften and come together. Best after 2029.

The 2022 Réserve de la Comtesse Is a sexy wine. Plush contours wrap around a core of black cherry, plum, graphite and dried flowers. The 2022 is unusual in that it includes all the Petit Verdot produced at the property. That's a decision that paid off handsomely.

Laden with warmed cassis and dark plum notes, this moves slowly as bittersweet cocoa, espresso crema and dark tobacco accents fill in along the way. Cedar and savory hints add range and cut to the finish, and there's ample latent depth. A touch old school and can handle some cellaring. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2026 through 2038.

Gorgeous aromatics, vibrant but deep too. Tannins make the impact straight away, there’s good density here, clear concentration this is carrying some heft in the really quite potent dark fruit flavours, spiced edges and sense of heat that comes through the underneath. Broad but focussed, definitely more streamlined than wide and plush, with almost chewy tannins but that have a pure cool blue fruit, liquorice and slate grip to them giving them edges and creating the linear focus. Feels well constructed, still on the tense nervous side but it has an appealing juicy grip too. 3.8pH. 50% grand vin, 50% second wine. 3.8pH. 2% Cabernet Franc completes the blend.

The 2022 Réserve de la Comtesse represents half the total production from the vineyard due to a stricter selection of the Merlot. It has a perfumed, floral bouquet with blueberry, violet and light cassis scents. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. Very sensual with touches of graphite and espresso toward the harmonious finish. You could almost drink this now!

The 2022 Pichon Comtesse Reserve is made from 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant scents of juicy black plums, blackberry pie, and boysenberry preserves, plus hints of black cherries, cedar chest, and lavender. The medium to full-bodied palate coats the mouth with perfumed black fruit preserves, supported by plush tannins and just enough freshness, finishing on an earthy note. pH 3.8.

The second wine of Comtesse de Lalande, the 2022 Pichon Comtesse Réserve is based on 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc. Ripe black and blue fruits as well as some chocolaty, tobacco nuances define the aromatics, and it's a rich, full-bodied, velvety textured second wine that's going to drink brilliantly right out of the gate. This is well worth seeking out. Tasted twice.

The 2022 Réserve de la Comtesse is fabulous. Vibrant and impeccable in its balance, the 2022 is so impressive, mostly because of its balance. In some recent years the Réserve has been quite potent, but the 2022 leans more into the realm of sophistication, and polish. Hints of dark-fleshed fruit, licorice, lavender and spice linger. Don't miss it. Tasted four times. Drinking window : 2028-2040

Truffle, tobacco leaves, black currants, cedar, and hints of peppery spice show in the perfume. On the palate, the wine is clearly a baby Pichon. It is medium-bodied, elegant, soft, silky and lifted, with layers of finesse-oriented dark, red pit fruits that make you want to go back for another sip. This is just as good most vintages of the Grand Vin from the 80s and 90s. The wine blends 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2025-2040.

The density of fruit is serious with blackcurrants, black berries, crushed stone and coffee beans. Yet it’s not heavy and overdone. The palate is full and rich, but also agile and weightless, with tannins that are spread and pretty.
