Petrolo - Galatrona (BIO-ORGANIC) - Valdarno di Sopra - Toscana 2020

The estate

Petrolo is placed in Val d’ Arno di Sopra on the southeast side of the Chianti mountains bordering Chianti Classico. Petrolo was bought by the Bazzocchi family in the 40s. During the 80s Lucia Bazzocchi Sanjust, realized the great potential of the soil on the hill of Petrolo and with the help of her son Luca, begun renovating the company’s production line aiming to obtain results of the highest quality. From 2016 all Petrolo wines have official EU Organic Certification.

Galatrona is the “Grand-Cruof Merlot of Petrolo, only made with the grapes from the vineyard of the same name planted between the end of the 80’s and half of the 90’s with low vigor bordeaux clones. The peculiar soil, rich in clay in combination with schist, marl and sandstones, allows the concentration of all the noble components of the grapes, fundamental for the great structure, elegance, balance and persistence wanted for this wine.

The vintage

After a rather mild winter, the initially warm spring brought abundant rains in May and rather cold temperatures for the period. At the beginning of summer, with the heat wave of the first half of June, the development of the vines was realigned to its usual course. The few storms in July were not of real concern and temperatures below average allowed a balanced growth. The grapes in August where washed by some rains but the hot temperatures allowed a very good ripening.

Tasting notes

“To the nose, clear hints of blackbarries, plum, chocolate, fresh thyme and touches of licorice root. The mouthfeel is full body, balsamic and very well balanced, with velvety tannins and a sapid and persistent finish with finesse and beauty.” – Luca Sanjust

The 2020 Galatrona is stunning. In fact, the 2020 is one of the best vintages of the Galatrona I can remember tasting. I am especially impressed by its vertical intensity and explosive energy. All the elements are so impeccably woven together. Dark-toned fruit, crushed rocks, menthol, licorice and spice build into the intense, palate-staining finish. The 2018 spent 18-20 months in French oak, about 25% new, with some larger barrels thrown into the mix. Magnificent.

I was absolutely blown away by the wines I tasted from Petrolo this year. Proprietor Luca Sanjust and his team have done a remarkable job with the wines. "Overall, 2020 was marked by some pretty intense heat spikes and was not as even as 2019," Sanjust notes. "On the other hand, it's pretty hard to complain about vintages these days. I remember years in the 1980s my grandfather was not able to bottle at all because the fruit never ripened," he adds, a reminder of how much things have changed in the present era, some for the better and some for the worse. In tasting, the flagship Merlot Galatrona is off the charts. It's the best Galatrona I can remember tasting. There's plenty of richness but also greater freshness than in the past. I was also quite impressed with wines made in amphora, as they show greater precision and fewer of the funky notes that penalized some wines in some previous years.

Some forest floor notes mingled with dark fruits and fresh herbs - liquorice and blackcurrant with hints of dark chocolate and thyme. Supple and mouthfilling, this has weight from the get go, the tannins massy, plush and fleshy filling the mouth with rich, concentrated black fruit flavours. Detailed and precise, this has power and is well framed with high acidity giving the lifeforce to balance the concentration. A hefty wine, with real might but still some finesse. Some spiced wood elements at the end and a sense of high alcohol.

Subtle yet intense aromas of black fruit and violets. Extremely perfumed. Crushed stones. Medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannins that give a mouth-feel of velvet that goes on for minutes. Refined and fresh. Al-dente fruit. From organically grown grapes. Better in three to four years.

Savoury and mouthwatering, benefitting from its 300m of altitude in the southern part of Tuscany by the Chianti hills. Precise and finely boned tannins, emphasis on dried herbs on the nose, this is an enticing mix of savoury raspberry leaf and riper red cherry fruits, keeps things walking the line of grip and generosity. Luca Sanjust winemaker and owner, along with team including Carlo Ferrini. One of the first big 100% Italian Merlot wines after Masseto to be sold through the Bordeaux system, now its fifth vintage with négociants, and a wine that gives hope to those who worry that Merlot is becoming unviable in the heat of Italian summers.

The Petrolo 2020 Galatrona is a pure expression of organic Merlot and the estate's headline wine. It was first created in 1994 when Luca Sanjust's second child, Lucia, was born. Despite the summer heat that became a challenge for winemakers in many corners of Tuscany, Galatrona shows terrific results in 2020. The vineyard is located in a cool and thickly forested position almost exactly between Florence, Arezzo and Siena. The vintage has a classic quality with a subtle bouquet that grows in intensity as the wine opens in the glass. Aromas of cherry, toasted almond and dried mint fuel a long and very elegant finish. The oak tannins are soft and sweet, and the wine boasts long-lasting flavors.
