There is mouth-watering spiciness and grip with some lovely purple notes on top, and no barriques were used in its production. The young vine Clos du Marquis fruit has enjoyed its time in vats, given the freedom to express itself without having to conform to any oak regime. The result is a wine with decent depth and refreshing graphite detail. 16.5

The 2021 La Petite Marquise has a Cabernet-dominated nose of cassis and even ripe black fruits to go with some charcoal, graphite, and mineral nuances. Medium-bodied on the palate, it has good overall balance, ripe tannins, and a classy, elegant profile. It's a solid, serious wine.

The 2021 La Petite Marquise du Clos du Marquis contains 34% pressed wine this year, one of the highest amounts ever, and was raised in one 120-hectoliter vat, so there is no new oak here. It has a juicy bouquet courtesy of the Merlot, which imparts raspberry preserve and cranberry scents, all quite lush and forward despite a bit of reduction at the moment. There is a touch of glycerine with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, plenty of graphite-infused black fruit and a rather tight finish that suggests it will benefit from a couple of years in bottle. (12.95% alcohol)

The 2021 La Petite Marquise is a very pretty second wine. Dark, layered and inviting, La Petite Marquise is an ideal Saint-Julien to drink over the next decade or so. A burst of dark red cherry, plum, spice and new leather builds into the creamy finish. There is more Cabernet Sauvignon than typical in this year's blend, as is common for so many wines, along with an unusually high amount of press wine, at 34%.

There will only be around 18,000 bottles of the 2021 La Petite Marquise, a charming, seamless, medium to full-bodied wine evocative of ripe berries and plums mingled with cigar box and loamy soil. It incorporates a lot of press wine this year, which no doubt explains its impressive mid-palate depth for a second wine in this vintage.
