Petit Village - Pomerol 2022

Petit Village is set to be Grand

Opportunities to buy into Pomerol's premium sites are few and far between. So when the Moulin family (Galeries Lafayette group) co-owner of Château Beauregard, had the opportunity to acquire Château Petit Village, a stunning estate on the opposite side of the road, they seized it both hands. Since June 2020, this magnificent 10,5ha vineyard, located on the Pomerol plateau, and among the appellation's most historically-acclaimed terroirs, surrounded by names as prestigious as Vieux Château Certan, La Conseillante, Trotanoy and L'Evangile, has seen fresh impetus from its new owners and new managing director Vincent Priou.

"Everyone knows the quality of the terroirs at Petit Village, which in the period after the war was considered among Pomerol's Top 3 estates. Petit Village is a garden, requiring endless, meticulous attention. There are certain aspects we need to get right, which is why we are going to step it up a gear". Vincent Priou, managing director of Châteaux Beauregard and Petit Village.

Since 2020, Vincent Priou has focused on 4,5ha of vines at the "heart of the terroir" in a bid to enhance quality of Petit Village. The results were quite spectacular for the wine. The stage was set. Now the team intents on continuing to develop the estate: plans to remodel the vineyard, conversion to organic, siginificant renovations to improve the winery facilities and the reception area. The message is loud and clear: Petit Village is set to be Grand.

The 2022 vintage

"This extraordinary 2022 vintage displays the progression of the revival of Petit-Village initiated with both 2020 and 2021. It confirms, yet again, the powerful potential of this exceptional clay soil at Château Petit-Village.
Very distinctive, it develops a complex, aromatic bouquet based on red and black fruits, mint, liquorice and intense violet flowers. The velvety tannins are remarkable, both with volume and great density, an elegant freshness emerges on the finish, worthy to be a monumental vintage." Vincent Priou

n 2020, I described Château Petit-Village as “Iron Man gradually smiling.” I never imagined that in just two years, I would witness a more composed and confident smile. The fruit aroma of this wine is incredibly pure, and the violet scent that fills the glass after a swirl is irresistibly captivating. The robust metallic backbone of Petit-Village effortlessly transforms into fresh milk adorned with petals as it hits the palate—smooth, refined, yet still full of structure and strength. As I taste this wine, I can almost see the entire process of crafting a haute couture handbag, with its delicate texture, precise stitching, and not a single thread can be found. In my opinion, Vincent and Guillaume’s team have fully integrated their winemaking philosophy into this gravelly clay terroir, and I am confident they will write a brilliant chapter in the history of Château Petit-Village.

Increasingly impressed with this wine over recent vintages, heavy spice and smoked earth closes things down a little, but there are plenty of cassis and pomegranate fruits, enjoyable. 45% new oak, 5% of 500l oak casks, 30hl/h yield, final year in organic conversion.

The 2022 Château Petit-Village is 70% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc, and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, offering red fruits, spice, and graphite alongside beautifully integrated oak. Medium to full-bodied, it has elegant floral notes, seamless purity, and ultra-fine tannins. Not massive, but wonderfully refined, it shares a stylistic similarity with Conseillante but leans more into red fruits. Aged for 15 months in 45% new oak barrels, this will drink well for 30+ years.

2028-2047 98/100

The 2022 Petit-Village has retained a ripe and slightly candied bouquet, with violets and peony aromas infusing the black fruit upfront. It's a little "glossy" in style compared to its peers. The palate is medium-bodied and perhaps less corpulent than out of barrel, with grainy tannins, veins of dark chocolate and mint chip and a sweet finish. It's not bad, although it does not quite deliver the complexity this château is capable of.

The blackberries and blueberries, ash and cedar are prevalent on the nose, flowing through to a medium body with a beautiful center palate and curated tannins that run the length of the wine. The texture and mouthfeel are exceptional as well as the freshness and focus at the end. Very balanced. Drink after 2029 and beyond.

The 2022 Petit-Village turned out beautifully. Elegant and polished to the core, the 2022 is a Pomerol of refinement. Crushed flowers, spice, new leather, cedar, mint and espresso are all beautifully delineated. Silky, polished tannins bring it all together on the vibrant finish. The 2022 spent 14 months in French oak, 45% new, with some alternative vessels thrown into the mix. The oak is very well integrated here, more so than it is in Beauregard, with which is shares ownership and the winemaking team.

Nicely scented and richly aromatic nose, dark and milk chocolate and. Ripe and heady blackcurrants and cherries with liquorice, coffee, mint, dark chocolate, tobacco and inky notes too. Sleek and sophisticated, I like the immediate tension and hold of the wine, supple and gently succulent with really beautiful texture to the tannins, nicely plush - cool but grippy and cushioning. This is a little atypical in terms of fruit density, but the tannins are nicely filling and this has juicy acidity. On the serious side right now, but there’s still a sense of polish. A new destemmer and density sorter to clean the grapes as of 2022. Technical director Guillaume Fredoux and managing director Vincent Priou. pH 3.85. Aged 18 months, 45% new oak barrels. Harvest September 2 - September 19.

In the 2022 vintage, I once likened Château Petit-Village to "Iron Man gradually revealing a smile." A mere two years later, I now witness an even more confident smile. The fruitiness is astoundingly pure, and the beguiling scent of violets is released with a gentle swirl of the glass. The metallic structure transforms into a velvety, petal-laden cream once it touches my palate. As I tasted this wine, I felt as though I was observing the making process of a haute couture handbag, with its refined texture, precise stitching, and no thread out of place. In my opinion, Vincent and Guillaume's team has seamlessly integrated their winemaking philosophy into the gravelly clay terroir, not only elevating Château Petit-Village to new heights but also penning the next illustrious chapter.

The 2022 Petit-Village, a blend of 68% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Franc and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, is endowed with a ripe, slightly candied nose, lively red berry fruit tinged with blood orange. It responds well to aeration, cohering and gaining focus. The palate is well balanced, with slightly tertiary-infused black fruit, just a touch of piquancy toward the finish. There is a pleasing corpulence to this Pomerol, though it never quite engages full-throttle when some of its neighbors have in this vintage. This is an estate that has more to give, not now but in the future.

Cassis, mocha, coffee bean, densely packed but supple dark fruits. There is clear acidity and it is needed amid the intensity of the fruit, with everything offset by curls of attractive peony and rose notes. Harvest September 2 to 19 (but the begining was for the second wine). 10.5ha, 3rd year with the Moulin family as owners. Soft extraction, no pumpovers. 30hl/h yield, from a section of the vineyard with a lot of clays that kept freshness in this vintage. Guillaume Fredoux winemaker (the same team now works across both Petit Village and Beauregard). 45% new oak, 5% of 500l oak casks, 3.85ph,

The 2022 Château Petit-Village is another brilliant wine from this estate. Checking in as 65% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, it has remarkable purity in its black cherries, blueberry, violets, and flowery incense-driven aromatics. Still resting in 35% new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, has ripe, fine tannins, a great mid-palate, and a gorgeous finish. Coming from more clay and gravelly soils and harvested between the 9th and 21st of September, it's going to warrant at least 5-7 years of bottle age but should have a broad drink window.

The 2022 Petit-Village comes across as very dark and concentrated. Black cherry, espresso, chocolate, licorice, menthol and tobacco power through. In this tasting, the 2022 comes across as deeply extracted, with a strong oak imprint and bruising tannins. This feels a bit pushed to me. Drinking window : 2027-2037

Dark in color, the wine pops with its display of flowers, spearmint, blackberries, plums, and black cherries. Opulent, silky, fresh, vibrant, and long, the fruit expresses its ripe, black, blue, and red berries with purity, elegance, and a touch of peppery, spice , espresso, and dark cocoa in the energetic finish. The wine blends 65% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Franc and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon.14% ABV, 3.85 pH. Yields were 30 hectoliters per hectare. Picking took place September 2, September 22.. Drink from 2026-2055.

Offering up aromas of dark berries, plum preserve and kirsch, framed by creamy new oak, the 2022 Petit Village is medium to full-bodied, with a sweet, fleshy, somewhat baked core of fruit framed by generously extracted tannins. It appears to be a wine without a very strong sense of identity.

The black berry, dark chocolate and crushed stone character is really pretty. Full-bodied and solid with fine tannins that spread across the palate. Silky and soft at the end. Very long and fine. Wait and see.
