Petit Village - Pomerol 2021

Petit Village is set to be Grand

Opportunities to buy into Pomerol's premium sites are few and far between. So when the Moulin family (Galeries Lafayette group) co-owner of Château Beauregard, had the opportunity to acquire Château Petit Village, a stunning estate on the opposite side of the road, they seized it both hands. Since June 2020, this magnificent 10,5ha vineyard, located on the Pomerol plateau, and among the appellation's most historically-acclaimed terroirs, surrounded by names as prestigious as Vieux Château Certan, La Conseillante, Trotanoy and L'Evangile, has seen fresh impetus from its new owners and new managing director Vincent Priou.

"Everyone knows the quality of the terroirs at Petit Village, which in the period after the war was considered among Pomerol's Top 3 estates. Petit Village is a garden, requiring endless, meticulous attention. There are certain aspects we need to get right, which is why we are going to step it up a gear". Vincent Priou, managing director of Châteaux Beauregard and Petit Village.

Since 2020, Vincent Priou has focused on 4,5ha of vines at the "heart of the terroir" in a bid to enhance quality of Petit Village. The results were quite spectacular for the wine. The stage was set. Now the team intents on continuing to develop the estate: plans to remodel the vineyard, conversion to organic, siginificant renovations to improve the winery facilities and the reception area. The message is loud and clear: Petit Village is set to be Grand

To be noted, in 2020, Château Petit Village got a makeover with a new label and waxed bottles.

The 2021 vintage

With such though weather conditions, the expertise of Beauregard's team applied to Petit Village was the key in this vintage, especially in Petit Village's second year of conversion to organic farming.

The 2021 Petit-Village is laced with dark cherry/plum fruit, mocha, spice, licorice and leather. It offers good mid-palate density and fine balance. Overall, the 2021 feels a bit constricted and perhaps a bit too pushed given the natural potential of the year. Petit-Village remains a work in progress under its new ownership, but I am optimistic. To be sure, this was not an easy vintage.

The 2021 Petit Village offers up aromas of dark berries, pencil shavings and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and layered palate framed by a generously extracted chassis of powdery tannin, concluding with a structured, oak-inflected finish.

Vibrant and energetic wine with juicy blue plums and black cherries followed by violets, Christmas spices, cocoa and a touch of fresh herbs. Some hazelnut. Full- to medium-bodied, bright acidity with finely grained tannins that are polished and textured. Wonderful concentration with a lively vibrancy and density to it. 65% merlot, 26% cabernet franc and 9% cabernet sauvignon. Try after 2025.

A fleshy, slightly reserved offering, with dark tea, plum and blackberry notes that meld nicely. The finish reveals a warm earth undertow and ends with a bay leaf echo. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2033. 1,000 cases made.  –JM

Blackberry, dark-chocolate and crushed-slate aromas and flavors. Some lead pencil, too. It’s full and medium-chewy with a fresh finish. Solid. 65% merlot, 26% cabernet franc and 9% cabernet sauvignon.

The 2021 Château Petit-Village showed brilliantly, and this is certainly a château readers should have on their short list. Beautiful black cherries, raspberries, violets, and floral notes define the bouquet, and it's medium-bodied on the palate, with a charming, supple, seamless mouthfeel that carries ripe, polished tannins, good mid-palate depth, and a great finish. It's unquestionably a gorgeous wine in the making.

Petit-Village 2021 is definitely a “sexy bomb” that seems to be delicate but is actually quite powerful. The gentle fragrances of berry fruits echo the soft and mild texture appeared in the beginning. Some mellow while refreshing sensation, like chilled milk flowing on the palate, is hence delivered. Thanks to the firm structure brought by the clay soil, this wine starts to show its strength and profound structure on the mid-palate, a perfect counter to the lack of concentration in 2021. 2021???Petit-Village??????????????“???”?????????????????????,????????,???????????????????????????,??????????????????????,???????????2021???????????

The 2021 Petit-Village was picked in several tries through the parcels, this vintage the first using a density sorter and made 100% by gravity. Harvested between September 29 and October 5 and matured in 50% new oak, it has a very pure bouquet of black cherries and blueberry fruit, crushed violet coming through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, the Cabernet component imparting almost Left Bank traits of pencil lead and cedar. Displaying good depth, and more cohesive than vintages that I was tasting five to six years ago, this Petit-Village demonstrates fine focus. Though it needs a little more fruit on the finish, it should age well in bottle. (13.5% alcohol)

The 2021 Petit-Village is a pretty supple wine, with lovely fruit purity and terrific balance. There is good energy and depth throughout. The 2021 was made only from the old vines here. It will be interesting to see what the new ownership team brings, as Petit-Village sits on what most observers consider pretty hallowed ground.

Aromas of dark berries, cherries, sweet spices and raw cocoa introduce the 2021 Petit Village, a medium to full-bodied, concentrated, ambitious wine that's layered and velvety, with lively acids and ripe but rather chewy tannins. The fruit of a rigorous selection, I appreciate all the hard work that's going here, but I wonder if a gentler touch with extraction might have delivered something more sensual. It's a blend of 65% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Franc and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, and it was picked late but very quickly, benefiting from the Moulin family's large picking team.

Perfumed and concentrated on the nose, pure black fruit aromas scented with juniper, blackcurrants and black cherries. Delicate and graceful in terms of flavour profile but with robust and firm tannins that coat the mouth with a wonderful succulence and high acidity. This delivers a soft chewiness where you get a full mouthfeel with lift and vibrancy as well as a cool menthol finish. Sharp and tart strawberries and red cherries but also chalky and wet stone elements. Feels well worked but with energy and sculpting. You get the precision here, feel the cleanness of the fruit and tension in the minerality. It’s beguiling in its approachability on the one hand and it’s structured, knitted core on the other. Muscled but elegant.
