Le Petit Ducru - Saint-Julien 2023

Le Petit Ducru de Ducru Beaucaillou, an elixir of youth

This newcomer ine the world of Châteay Ducru Beaucaillou's wines is a selection derived from the St -Julien vineyards. It is a nod to the history of the estate, specifically to one of the former owners, Bertrand Ducru (1770-1829), a brilliant wine merchant. Powerful and well established, he bought the estate in 1797 and added his surname to that of the site, which then became “Ducru-Beaucaillou”.

Its affectionate and informative name already informs enthusiasts about its positioning and ambitions. Le Petit Ducru has the taste of friendship. Accessible from its early days, it is an unpretentious wine with Chaplinesque mischievousness.

Le Petit Ducru is an introduction to the Borie style, a courteous invitation to explore the qualities of its elders, Ducru-Beaucaillou and La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou. Complexity, structure, balance, and elegance, there is indeed a family resemblance, a beautiful connivance among the three nectars.

Deep purple with pronounced aromas combining rich plums, vanilla bean, and a touch of mocha. The palate has generous ripe fruits and a plush, velvet texture supported by vibrant acidity, with fruits and spices lingering on the finish.

Cedar, black currants, elderberries and touches of mint, eucalyptus and bark create a focused, expressive nose. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, tight and precise, with evenly distributed dark fruit framed by fine, defined tannins that add focus and tension in the finish. Better from 2028.

The 2023 Le Petit Ducru is deep garnet-purple in color. It springs from the glass with vibrant notes of fresh plums, boysenberries, and black raspberries leading to hints of menthol, cinnamon stick, and underbrush. The medium-bodied palate is soft textured, delivering refreshingly crunchy black fruits with great tension and a red berry lift on the finish. The blend is 72% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4% Petit Verdot. This has morphed into a third wine of Ducru Beaucaillou, made from younger vines and declassified fruit.

Plush and fragrant opening to Le Petit Ducru in this vintage, the deep black pepper, capsicum and turmeric spice that is a signature of the vintage, with gorgeous fresh slate and graphite set against cassis fruits. 30% new oak for ageing.

The 2023 Le Petit Ducru de Ducru-Beaucaillou is packed with blackberry, chocolate, licorice, cloves and menthol. A wine of substance and textural richness, Le Petit Ducru shows the more opulent side of a year marked with late-season heat, also revealing some stylistic choices by way of its bombastic personality. This Saint-Julien is certainly not shy.

The 2023 Le Petit Ducru de Ducru Beaucaillou has a seductive bouquet with pure red fruit, incense and light cedar scents, just a slight minty element emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit and fine structure. There’s a dash of black pepper and more fruit concentration on the finish than the Madame de Beaucaillou. Very promising.

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Delicate black forest berry notes, a hint of heart cherry, floral touch. Medium body, red cher- ry, somewhat broad, subtle tannins, a hint of sweetness on the finish, offers uncom- plicated drinking pleasure.
